They made something that is very clearly a rip-off of an existing IP but made it clearly distinct enough that you know it is its own thing if you see it. So basically, their asses are saved by those big, goofy helmets and a few changed phrases. It also helps they have their own lore (Space King being away banging hot aliens as opposed to a God Emperor who may or may not be a psychic corpse on a throne.) Also, as has been said, parody is legally protected and there's enough satire in SK to make the property legally-defensible as parody.
