I think Hussie thought Karkat was aspirational, but he never stopped sucking, and the characters he did kill off were well written, and were showing signs of becoming better people. But I do think Hussie is wrong in what his assessment of an aspirational hero is. Hussie killed off and shoved aside the characters in the comic who were trying to become better people, and put the spotlight directly onto the boring, stagnant slump that is the main cast.

John never showed interest in any dudes for the entire 7 year run of the original comic, much less in Dave, and this is despite the comic itself getting increasingly queer. Not only was he never gay or bisexual in the first 5 acts, he was never even retconned into being so throughout the entirety of Act 6.He’s only ever been interested in girls, up to and including his Liv-Tyler poster. The more I think about it, that whole exchange was pretty out of character for John actually. Even putting aside his sexuality, which tumblrdykes would cry bloody murder over for any canonically gay/bi characters mind you, he would never casually call Dave “easy on the eyes” in any way other than as a joke, even if he did find him attractive. In fact, he’d be even less likely to refer to Dave that way. The fact they included this in their starved-for-time 11 minute proof of concept is a big red flag.I guess those who “skipped to the trolls” on their first read through wouldn’t actually care about John being in character.
