Jake just has more of a past because he reached adulthood long before Finn despite being similar in age. When we're introduced to him, he's kind of just a bum. Finn had hooks like the fact that he was the only human in a continent full of freak, and his almost pathological drive to help people comes from a sense of abandonment he felt when he was a baby lost in a strange land. The best stuff with him builds on this core, but it was always there.

They de-powered Fionna and ramped up her anger issues, Cake went from being a sidekick to her own character. The problem with F&C is that it's too tropey, and it's not done in an ironic way like in the original episodes. I actually prefer the original episodes even though they are less character-driven in those ones. The non-traditional narrative, especially in the last episode, makes these F&C episodes superior to the new show.
