The “bad” seasons just have some low points that stick out like sore thumbs.Even when I think about an arc I dislike, such as the Ice and Fire/Flame Princess breakup arc being tedious, I also remember that arc had episodes like Dungeon Train, which is an episode I really like and enjoy rewatching. So all seasons have some value to me.

She kept making little appearances even when the writers didn’t really know what to do with her, like Finn & Jake Investigations. Later on in season 5 I remember reading that Jesse Moynihan particularly wanted to do episodes focused on her (which is what probably led to him boarding/writing Flute Spell). What you feel as a boom is the convergence of fans and internal staff being interested in her and wanting to find out what she’s about. Hopefully we’ll find out soon.
