I think it makes sense that at one point Stella and Stolas genuinely loved one another, around the time Octavia was a teen the marriage started to dim out, they did stay together for their love for Octavia.Overtime Stella and Stolas began to drift further apart and when Stolas' affair was found out is when Stella gave into emotions and had a bounty put on Stolas' head.
