Don't forget they referenced the Simpsons writers turning Lisa into a liberal mouthpiece.

It's really funny how the parody of smiling friends the simpsons made was acting like smiling friends was just this shitty hodgepodge of incoherent screaming. Like they had an 8 ball that literally just said "Screaming" on it. It's funny not because it's accurate or witty, but because the creators are so fucking old and out of touch that they genuinely thought people would be like "yeah, fuck smiling friends" with them when they just came off like a bunch of fogies who don't and don't want to understand what's new and funnier than they are.

I laughed so fucking hard at how spiteful and petty it was.

This whole thing made me think. Why have modern shows never had as consistently good writing as early simpsons, early Futurama, or even early SpongeBob? Not to say everything modern is bad, I like Smiling friends and a bunch of modern cartoons, but they are just straight up not as funny as the shows I mentioned. Its not nostalgia either since I didnt watch classic Simpsons/Futurama until recently.
I mean this in the least mean way possible but have we just lost the ability to write comedy that good anymore? At least in the animation space (non-animated shows are a whole other discussion)?

>have we just lost the ability to write comedy that good anymore? At least in the animation space (non-animated shows are a whole other discussion)?
yes, unironically. The industry is now run by people with no sense of humor and too much fear in trying anything new. It's actually a fucking miracle that we got something as out there as smiling friends in the current industry, and I think most of that has to do with Cusack's tenure. I don't think the show would have made it if it were only Zach Hadel's baby.

Writing in general has degenerated massively, I think mainly just because marketing has become so powerful in the internet age that companies don't care as much about storytelling as much as they do capturing the attention of slop eaters. And of course, the indies have no filter or standards, so anything from them is golden so as long as they have fandombait characters.
>>
>>151327106
you are correct, but I think it boils down to so many things that all interplay in various amounts:

>generational differences
the writers now grew up consuming the old writer's material, so they either ape them, or don't want to copy them, for better or for worse.
>bureaucratic bloat / corporatism
Can't take a risk on anything, nothing can have a slow turnaround. They will kill a show before it even grows legs because there aren't returns NOW.
>nepotism.
it is what it says on the tin.
>DEI
it is what it says on the tin.
>modern formatting of TV
netflix LITERALLY designs modern content to be "second monitor content". this effects what writers can get write, and of course this is only netflix, but considering everything is streaming, it's not hard to deduce it might be all of them.
>sheer job competition
the talent pool is spread out between more companies and more shows. someone who's good at X isn't going to work on the Y show with good people if Y show pays less than what Z show is offering

Most cartoon shows can't afford good comedy writers. Even the ones that can like the Simpsons ultimately ended up losing their best writers to places that gave them better offers.

>>

We’re still getting good stuff, just not as frequently. Common Side Effects, Women Wearing Shoulder Pads, Haha You Clowns are some great [as] originals, and Kiff on Disney is quite a well-written show.
>>
>>151332260
it's because Seth MacFarlane, regardless of how people feel about his work (huge American Dad and Orville fan btw), at least puts in some effort and soul, even if he isn't in the same exact league of quality as the likes of Mike Judge. Matt Groening, however, just feels like he NEEDS to milk every ounce of his project one by one, which explains why Futurama has been resurrected from the dead and Simpsons still keeps on going, which is why his projects tend to be as soulless as possible

The weird thing about them doing this was that The Simpsons already has an in-universe cartoon show that's loud and violent and that Marge doesn't like.
This is just recycling the same old joke, but it feels like the intention has shifted from "yeah it may be a bit over the top but that's part of the fun, and isn't it funny how Parents Just Don't Understand?" to "Wow, ummmm I just don't understand. People have talked about how early Simpsons had a system where the writers would sit in a room together, and try to one-up each other's jokes, so you kind of have this structure to the humour where something funny happens, and then something funnier happens, and then something funnier happens.
I guess no one else does that, for whatever reason.

Matt Groening might not understand every joke or subtle internet reference, but he probably loves it overall. He got his start making underground comics, the modern equivalent being internet cartoons. A guy like him would appreciate Smiling Friends more than the college-educated screenwriters who've been led to believe that all adult TV cartoons should be half-hour script-driven sitcoms with a standard three-act structure, mainstream pop culture references, and "timely" social commentary played straight. Groening's job is to attend comic-con panels and draw doodles of Bart.

It always comes back to the problem of being multiple generations deep into the screen-media ecosystem. The Simpsons writers were inspired by Thomas Pynchon, Buster Keaton, and Don Bluth alike. It's in major part this, I think the younger your writing staff gets, especially now, the less likely they are to put out good content. It's gonna be extremely derivative, sometimes directly referencing or homaging, and the writers just haven't had the kind of life experiences to turn into good stories. Some homeless guy being weird on the bus around you makes for a good gag but can it take up half of your B-plot? Not that they can't churn out gold once in a while, but you'll see this get worse and worse, people whose entire lives have just been consuming media now in charge of putting out the new media.

Because good writing takes money and talent. Modern media companies don't want to keep the same people on for ten years with all the risks that entails, they want cheap replacable workers who do as they're told and never offend anyone. This is also why brown and/or women writers ruin a show; they're brought in not to add talent but to reduce labour costs and creator control. They're conduits for the suits to run a show into the ground.

Unironically it's an extremely good jab at the simpsons despite how short it is. Zach and Michael managed to break down the characters perfectly, like Marge being a "oh child stop that" mother every episode, Bart coming with references of 2-year old shit, Lisa being a political shill plot device and homer being dumbed down to spamming the same one liners. I also found Pim's voice at the end a tad bit sarcastic.

>>
>>151326381
It also doesn't make sense. Part of the humor of Smiling Friends is the normal dialogue you could hear any day and any place while weird stuff is going on. I don't know where they got it was just them screaming from besides a couple gags when certain characters are suffering.
>>
>>151356235
>No there wasn't... In Marge's point of view. But Bart is the one watching the show on his own so he knows it has good storytelling because he watched it.
Those few seconds of people screaming is what the Simpsons writers believe the show is. There is no "Actually it's good' because if they believed that, they would have provided the context for it. It's a joke. You're supposed to laugh at this ridiculous thing this kid is saying.
>>

None except the blue baby resemble the smiling friends cast even slightly. Why are 3 of them animated objects? That's not even a thing in SF.
The same way Fox doesn't have the rights to SF characters likenesses, SF doesn't have rights to the Simpsons ones, yet you can clearly see which is which.

It's painfully obvious Simpsons writers had no idea what SF was and just lazily concoted a bit about it. They wanted to be hip and talk about current thing and missed the mark so much it only reinforced how out of touch they are.

they get their inspiration from real life stuff which is why the naturalistic dialogue works, and why the show feels current - like the gag with Allen being preyed on at a comic con.

SF is not a cartoon based off other cartoons. I've heard the sentiment that people should reference their own lives and not other cartoons said elsewhere online, maybe it was John K's blog, or Peter Chung on a forum, or some tweet on toon twitter. The Simpsons is in this cannibalistic state where it references nothing but itself. The writers don't get it, pop culture has moved on. they fired danny elfman for not being "with it" or contemporary musically, but the writers must go too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi_fxwLBSFo the simpsons are empty signifiers.

Homer doesn't reflect the life of a 35 year old dad with three kids today - he'd be a gamer as well as Bart, but Bart would be on TikTok and actually saying stuff like Hawk tuah. Lisa would be on bluesky. Marge would be on pinterest. we can't pretend this is the pre-internet age anymore, so these characters mean nothing to us. why is Disco Stu still around? Mayor Quimby is an old Kennedy parody, these references mean nothing to kids today. how about scene kid stu? dubstep stu? the simpsons is stuck in a time capsule.

Charlie calling off work to play a grand strategy game and having his boss on steam speaks more to how real young adults live now. even the devil getting his uber eats and the way his room is messy and him being a rut is the closest most millennials and gen Z have been to seeing themselves depicted with some honesty and understanding.

I've seen plenty of Simpsons episodes. I know the fat one is Krusty. And the one with glasses is Milhouse, obviously.

Might wanna check again.

Nah. They did a good job. The Simpsons stopped being good after Season 7.

The highest rated episode of all time (and my personal favourite) is Season 9. It's objectively Season 9 onwards, not 7.

There are often random characters that scream or yell or do le whacky face in Smiling Friends. When the comedy of Smiling Friends is nuanced, it's difficult to get a jab at it without making a much longer segment of the cartoon, so you reducto ad absurdum it down to the easiest thing you can do and Simpson's writers aren't known for working for jokes when a really quick

I think the 'Marge' stand-in's over the top old-timey, out-of-touch dialogue is underrated.
Fucking 'confounded computer-tablet-device' lol
>>
>>151361990
It's a good joke in theory but the delivery is completely flat because all they could think of to make fun of smiling friends over reliance on random fast loud noises is bart showing it on his ipad and saying something lame about loving the storytelling. They had a genuinely good observation of the show but executed mocking it for it in the laziest hackneyed way possible. Smiling friends parody in comparison is so much more elegant. Lisa stands in the corner virtue signalling without it having to be pointed. The lack of attention brought to her also emphasise how pointless and irrelevant the simpsons performative activism is to their plots and the core of the show. Bart's only line being an out of date reference used incorrectly. Their obsession with iPhones and tablets and shit. Homer's infamous rocking horse walk. Kino
>>
>>151361968
Yeah you're probably right. I don't even watch the Simpsons I was using a random number.

>Isn't Bart supposed to be a character the audience likes?
It's sarcastic. It's not a legitimate endorsement of Smiling Friends.
>>

This could be totally wrong but i feel like part of it is that in days past, the best writers were students of life and had a wide variety of experiences to write about and help make their creative works more interesting. Hell half of the best writers of the late 90s and early 2000s had college degrees in stuff like math and science and just minored in animation for the fuck of it even though they ended up doing that for a living. I feel it is more likely now that modern writers grew up just watching cartoons and got a job writing cartoons so all they know is cartoons which ends up being a shallow derivative of the things that inspired them 20 years ago.

100% malicious parody
zach and michael stabbed matt groening in the back with this attack after hanging out with him at that party.
>>
>>151362817
It's not about the jokes being "edgier" it's about the commentary behind it. A 6 second skit that encapsulates all the flaws of modern Simpsons while saying it should've ended a long time ago is far more scathing than Quagmire raping 50 Marges.

Also, comedy has declined because culture in general has declined. Writers are a lot more poorly and narrrowly-read than previous generations, as well as having fewer life experiences to draw from as they have been in white-collar media roles all their careers.

It's because Seth isn't in it that much. If anything, Matt Weitzman and (up until the TBS episodes) Mike Barker were the ones carrying the show, as too with a couple VAs like Rachael MacFarlane or Scott Grimes. They were the ones bringing more soul and energy than Seth

A lot of animated shows from the mid-1990s through the late-2000s are still well written and better executed than many of modern crap

Writing sucks harder these days for a few big reasons
1) the writers strike took a bunch of young writers out of the industry and gave a bunch of shitty scabs and nepotists writing credits to parlay into future writing jobs
2) Writers' rooms have gotten smaller and smaller and less and less collaborative, meaning jokes and scenes get bounced around and polished less which makes them less funny
3) Stand-up has been going through a transformation for a while now and people that would probably be good show writers are spending their time trying to blow up as a comic
>>
I think y'all are weird
But the funniest part of the "homer sees smiling friends as random screaming" bit is that people homer's age are the target audience

It was made in the same spirit as the Simpsons scene.
>show off cartoon that's nothing but random screaming
>"This is so funny and well-written!"
>show off a poorly animated cartoon with political scolding, creaky voice acting, awkward references to new technology and memes from a year ago, and ancient catch phrases
>"They've still got it!"
The difference between the two is that the Smiling Friends take on the Simpsons was more accurate even if they did exaggerate for comedy.
>>
You could just play the sound and people would get it was parodying the Simpsons, while still being funny.
It's pretty much just one of those low effort character impressions/scenarios that the Sleepy Cabin guys have always done, except this time they added some animation.

Peppermint butler, LSP, Ice King, and Cinnamon Bun are round characters with solid color eyes.

1. I doubt Matt has had any involvement with the Simpsons in years
2. The show has referenced meat canyon before.

His spoken line is nothing like Krusty's at all. Krusty doesn't have a catchphrase like that.

I like how previously your argument for the characters in the screaming friends being distinct was to avoid copyright but now you're bitching that the parodies of the Simpsons characters aren't close enough to the real thing.
