Tonight was Snowman Night for me:

>Frosty the Snowman
What else could I say that hasn't already been said a dozen times? It's charm and magic helps it to hold up even 56 years later. Don't have much a review for this but again I don't wanna be too samey, so I'll just get to the main event.

>The Snowman
I wanted to wait for the Xmas Eve stream. I really did. But I couldn't. This is a genuine contender for the greatest animated short of all time. Phenomenal use of pantomime, accompanied by a beautiful score that goes from jovial and magical to sweeping and grand depending on what the characters are doing. Impressive how such a complete story can be told with no dialogue. But of course, those who've seen The Snowman can't bring it up without bringing up the iconic "Walking Through the Air" sequence. I still get chills every time I see it. This short already has stellar animation, perfectly replicating the original book by Raymond Briggs, but this scene goes ALL OUT. This must've taken ages. They even made the northern lights look more natural and not just colored like the rest. So much care and passion was put into this its unreal...well, it kinda is. The book, and by extension, the short, was made in honor of Briggs' late wife. May she rest in peace. I say honor is an understatement. This is a masterpiece. An actual work of art, a grand showcase of animation as a medium for storytelling and a heartfelt tribute. I am not exaggerating. See it for yourself if you think I am.

Now that I mentioned the Christmas Eve stream, I have some news for Skeletal. Remember when I said I managed to find the original 1985 airing of Garfield's Halloween Adventure? Well, it got better. I just found the original 1987 airing containing A Garfield Christmas AND Claymation Christmas Celebration!

https://archive.org/details/claymationchristmas480p

If you're interested in using this for the stream, it's all yours!
>>
>>151554146
Got slammed with snow yesterday but mostly it's just been sort of surviving.
My siblings live far away so gifts are mostly little care packages. The only people I really shop for are my parents and nephews.
I admit I'm not really feeling it as far as holiday cheer goes. But I guess fake it till you make it.
>>
Nervously waiting for all the missing regular names to come back.
>>
>>151557887
For Frosty, I usually wait for it to air on TV (NBC is airing tomorrow) but yeah it's fun

I love the sequel to the Snowman too, the Snowman and the Snowdog makes a nice double feature with the original.

I mean December just started and the first four days were regular work days so not a surprise. Good week so far although this week is extremely time-consuming work-wise. Been on some projects and I'm still thinking about how to distribute my remaining days of vacation. Also planning some Christmas market meetups for the weekend while trying to squeeze a trip to my barbershop inbetween one of my breaks

>>151554410
I really need to start looking for Christmas presents. My family has been thinking about stopping the gifting but I just can't not get something for everyone

>>151556293

It's raining again. I guess it's not unexpected, I live too close to the Gulf Stream, we're getting a proper winter maybe once every five years over here. At least it's supposed to let up by the time I'm leaving for work.

I only saw this for the first time last year and I was just completely stunned throughout that whole sequence, forgetting there was a chat, forgetting I was watching a stream, just staring at the actual masterpiece that was being displayed on my monitor

December 4th is Topou I Day in Tonga, celebrating both the birth and the start of the reign of George Topou I, the first king of modern Tonga (as opposed to Tu'i Tonga) - separated by 48 years, it's not like he became king at birth.

Since it's another tropical island, you'd be hard-pressed to find a spruce or any other kind of conifer around, so Tongans usually decorate any old tree (or palm) they've got growing in their back yard, using sweets, balloons and paper chains. In lieu of Christmas lights, Tongans arrange coconut husks and light them on fire in what is known as Tutukupakanava (since I couldn't find a decent photo of that, I had to instead use one of Tupakapakanava, a ceremony of lighting torches). And if you demand that fireworks be noisy as well as well, you can always go for fana pitu, where bamboo shoots are filled with kerosene and used kind of like a cannon. That's more for New Year's though.

As for food, the feast is oftentimes prepared in an umu, an underground pit oven using hot stones. Mainstays include roast pork, lū-pulu, kumalas and ufi (Tongan sweet potatoes and yams).

I come bearing tidings of great joy! An extended version of Beavis and Butthead Do Christmas! (Uh, huh-huh-huh. "Extended.")

This includes both Xmas episodes from 95, plus the letters to Santa Butthead, and all music video reactions from Very Special Christmas! I'll admit, the editing isn't perfect, but that's not exactly what I was going for, I just thought it'd be convenient to have everything in one spot.

https://www.seriesam.com/barks/detc_ccus_os0203-02.html

>In a letter to a fan dated March 22, 1961, Barks wrote: "I felt sourly about the finished story because the editors had made me do some changes in the fight sequences between Don and the witch that I thought took the guts out of the story. I still gag when I read the last two pages of the story. But the rest of the tale was robust enough."

>For Barks' editors, Christmas was an especially touchy comedy subject. Not only because it was a religious holiday, but also because it was supposed to be a time of selflessness and good cheer. In harmony with this sentiment, Barks' editors sent him a "preachy" story about Donald defeating a wicked witch who threatens to destroy all the Christmas trees in the world in an effort to extinguish the Christmas spirit.

Tonight I saw the original 1966 short of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I honestly think we underestimate Seuss' rhyming skills, I really think not many could pull it off. I like the way the Grinch is animated - he moves so fluidly but also sharply, and this combined with his facial expressions really tell you that he's a force to be reckoned with. Also I immediately tip my hat to ANY Christmas special where the message is "fuck the presents, love your family and feel the magic," because togetherness and caring and giving really is Christmas.

I wanted to watch another short but I've had some work to do.

Yesterday we focused on a country spread over a bunch of islands, today we focus on an island with a bunch of countries (well, okay, just two). December 5th is Discovery Day in Hispaniola, the home of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, celebrating the day Columbus first landed there in 1492 (also Rama IX Memorial Birthday in Thailand).

Dominicans share a lot of traditions with other Spanish-speaking countries: Misa del Gallo (Rooster Mass, the one at midnight after Christmas Eve), gifts from the Magi in January, cleaning and sometimes painting your house (I guess that's not a strictly Panama tradition after all). The Christmas Eve feast when families gather is called "Noche Buena", and you can find roast pork and chicken on the table, as well as rice with pigeon peas, Pasteles en hojas (meat-stuffed banana leaves), Russian salad (hell if I know where that comes from, Polish communities across the border?) or plantain lasagne. Instead of Christmas trees, a house is decorated with Charamicos, artisan wooden trees (I know all trees are wooden, but you know what I mean. Pic related), typically painted white so there's at least some "White Christmas", as well as poinsettias. And on top of the gifts from the Magi, Dominicans also engage in "Angelitos", which is their version of Secret Santa.

In Haiti the midnight mass actually comes first, and then it's time for the feast, called Reveillon - fried goat, griot (pork marinated in orange juice), more rice with pigeon peas, upside-down pineapple cake and Kremas, rum-based drink similar to eggnog. Meanwhile, the kids leave their shoes, filled with straw, for Tonton Nwèl, who replaces the straw with gifts. As for decorations, Haitians are known for Fanals, paper lanterns.
After partying hardy throughout the night, Christmas Day is mostly spent sleeping it off.
And on New Year, which doubles as Independence Day, Haitian eat soup joumou as a "fuck you" to their former masters, who were the only ones allowed to eat it.

>The advent calendar challenge is commencing in approximate jingling parameters, and each tiny door contains a mystery object of festive improbability. Participants are instructed to unwrap Day Number Items in sequential chrono-slots. The challenge objective is simple: maintain cheer‐level above minimum threshold, even if the instructions become slightly misaligned from reality.

>An Australian aviator, Lieutenant Harris, is tasked with transporting a mysterious stone tablet near the end of World War II. But during the flight a supernatural storm engulfs the plane, warping nature’s laws and forcing the aircraft into the ocean — the crew emerges in a strange mist-shrouded zone littered with wrecks of ships from different eras. Back on the ground, no one believes Harris’s story: he’s court-martialled, jailed — and then escapes to track down lost pieces of the tablet. Together with the daughter of a kidnapped clergyman, they race a villainous military officer to recover the tablet and prevent him from using its power.

>A weird, mythical creature who once lived peacefully in nature has been driven into isolation when urban sprawl destroyed his home. As his food supply dwindles and odd, hostile townsfolk begin to encroach, he is confronted by a bigoted man and forced into extreme measures to survive. What follows is less a traditional narrative than a sequence of strange, surreal, and often grotesque encounters — the creature battles crayfish infestations, freaky visitors, and mounting paranoia.

This is true, but it's also something we just accpet as part of culture without a second thought. We think of Santa as something whimsical, and a lttle goofy, but not something mythical or epic, which he kinda is.

Again, think about everything posted and compare it to other parts of Nordic mythology and folklore.
>>
>>151582557
Santa's got a stronger mythos then either of those two. Nobody can really make sense of why fairies collect teeth or what bunnies have to do with eggs and Jesus's death, you can kinda just do whatever with them. Santa on the other hand remains very consistent across the board even with him constantly being reinterpreted in different ways.

TONIGHT ON THE SPOOKY STREAM
CHRISTMAS EDITION
Today is Krampusnacht, the evening before the Feast of St. Nicholas, meaning that the legendary creature, he who punishes the naughty, roams the streets. Tonight, we celebrate this bizarre, but beloved creature with a collection of Christmas spooks! First, Krampus himself is summoned to crash the Christmas party of Dr. Venture and associates!
Our first movie, celebrating its ten-year anniversary, a follow up to the Spooktober classic, Trick r Treat, reinterprets this monster as a twisted incarnation of all that is Christmas, to punish those who are cruel and selfish enough to destroy one’s faith in hope and good will. Presented in its unrated edition, it’s KRAMPUS, the 2015 movie.
Next, hosted by none other than a special Christmas guest star, Joe Bob Briggs, we see the story of Ricky, the brother of Billy Chapman, a traumatized boy who became a brutal killer in Santa’s skin. After so much horror in their lives, Billy threatens to snap and follow his bro’s footsteps, in SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT: PART 2. (Why are we skipping Part 1? Trust me, we aren’t. You’ll see.)
Finally, a lighter end to our haunts, in which Lord Hater and his troops are plagued by a terror onboard their battleship, one who is transforming the malicious and stupid troops into a state of happiness with rampant gift-giving!
Please note, due to the length of our movies, this stream will only have one intermission between films.

>>

glad youre watching along
>>
>>151585145
It's certainly memorable
>>
>>151585106
Freeform airs the credits, that was CBS that wasn't, Freeform was the first to air that peppermint scene for the first time in like 50 something years
>>
>>151585502
Huh, I always remember them fast forwarding them to make way for home alone lol, but yes they were in fact the first to air the peppermint mine scene that was for a long period of time missing, honestly I think subsequent airings following its first should’ve kept it, the whole thing went over everyone’s heads where in the DTV cgi sequel he was literally finding a silver and gold mine, good god the animation looks much worse than I remember lol
>>
>>151585106
It's crazy that they did it for so long
>>
>>151585602
Yeah Freeform used to have to air the full credits since the couldn't air it on Youtube TV etc. until last year. So they had let the credits play then let the next movie start after
>>
>>151584708
Huh... neat!
>>
I think I'm finally getting into the festive spirit. Guess these threads do work...

Tonight I saw:

>Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Hear that, folks? Your differences are good only if they can be useful to others! Oh, and the North Pole might be authoritarian!

...Okay, that aside, this one is always pretty fun. It's very quotable, has a lot of charm, good songs, and honestly great stop motion for the 60s. Some movements seem impossible without modern technology like the flying and some fluid camerawork, but nope! Though some have overanalyzed some aspects as above, we can't deny this one really is unique! Much better than the silly false ones. WAHOOOOO!

*pick* *lick* ...Nothin'...

>Father Christmas
Raymond Briggs with another grand win right here. My personal favorite incarnation of Santa, because he's far more grounded and human. He partakes in the same pleasures and inconveniences as we do. Heck, even the way he works is much more real, and it makes the annual trip more impressive and commendable as a result. He feels much more like he could actually exist than other Santas.

A merry bloomin' Saturday to you, anons!
>>
>>151587475
NTA but I never thought it was b...well yeah it's horrid, but fuck is it entertaining. Most of the garbage comes from the main Life Day plot, everything else ranges from meh to actually good. I still think fondly of the cartoon and the Cantina scene.
>>
>>151587480

So you have three or four flat screens on at the same time? Or a flat screen in your bedroom, a PC up on the desk, your laptop next to you on the bed, and the phone on the other side of you, while you play some of these at the same time?
And do nothing else?
No eating?
No bathroom breaks?
No sex?

Unemployed or NEET, I take it?
