Bump if you're readingThis storytime will be in black & whiteIt was supposed to be re-released in color but it never got published
I feel like a cool guy for being able to recognize some of the musical references in the titles.
>>152074138I've just realised that they used one of Georges Melies sketches/concept art for the moon (which the Robot in Hugo also drew) rather than redraw the scene from the actual movie, which I always thought looked more like a parody or a tribute image by a more later artist as in the likes of Basil Wolverton, Mort Drucker or Robert Crumb.
>>152074155>It was supposed to be re-released in color but it never got publishedWhat a shame. Did the other re-releases not sell well or something?
>>152074546>>152074553I like the collective dissonance they have about boys being flirty asshole when they are the same.
>>152075205Bleu really does romanticize the mundane of places with delusions.
>>152075283that third panel cracked methese comics are far better than that Serenity trashyou fags with nostalgia just dont get it
>>152075430uh ohVictor having them ntr wet dreams
And that concludes Blue Monday Volume 4: Painted Moon

>>152075454>stop nodding, Mr. Richkek
I think, like Lost at Sea, this comic looks better in Black and White than it does in colour.
>>152075561>ChrisHoly shit, his actual name.
>>152074138>painted moon>is black & whiteheh
>>152074915>Bleu wanking it in a public toiletHot.>>152076097Thanks OP. This was my first time reading and I actually enjoyed it, it was a fun unvarnished look at teenage life without being overly sappy or crammed with cringeworthy modern wokery (can you imagine Clover NOT being a lesbian if this was a modern comic, or really half of the content not being called out for being "problematic" in one way or another?) Shame it was never finished, I suspect its long hiatuses and unfinished status is probably why it's fallen into relative obscurity.
>IC: The first BLUE MONDAY series came out in 2000. What keeps you excited about this series and its setting? What need does it fill for you?>CLUGSTON FLORES: I really love the characters. They're very real to me, and are again loosely based off of people I knew and experiences I had back then, at least initially. I also have a real love for coming-of-age stories, especially comedic ones, and it makes me genuinely happy to have been able to create one of my own, it's not something I ever planned to give up doing.>As for the need it fills, well...I think youth is too fleeting and that's always bothered me, even as a teenager. My thought was always that you're old much longer than you're young, so what's the hurry? But I also believe it's far too easy to forget what it was like to be young and not in control of your life, and how much that aspect of it sucked. You had your parents, guardians, or your school managing what you did because you really are still a kid, and you're essentially powerless unless you choose to rebel. I think especially as a girl, someone is always trying to dictate what you are allowed to do, what to wear, how to behave, and you have to jump the hurdle of learning how to take control of your own life and ward off creeps. That never ends, really, but it's amplified in our teenage years.>We romanticize the past and the young, and are quick to forget all the problems that went along with youth, of which there are plenty. I like to be reminded so that I don't miss something too much that was really pretty lousy a big chunk of the time. There were great things, but a lot of crap, too. I think it helps me relate easier to the younger people in my life and not be as quick to laugh when I see them knee-deep in the melodramas I went through before, and it also helps me feel like I did back then when I write and draw the series. It keeps perspective in check. And it's simply enjoyable.https://imagecomics.com/features/blue-monday-tp-debut-interview
Huh, Chynna did art for a Saved by the Bell comic
>>152076097this might be the very first "slice of life" western comic I've ever read. unless you count newspaper trips, I guess. it was pretty good, thanks for dumping.
>>152077516>The forbidden reaction imageI respect you
>>152077211Oh yeah, Erin is a snake.
>>152079952SoL isn't super popular as a comic genre in the west I think since for the longest time it was kind of covered as a niche by television. Soap operas (especially the youth dramas of the sort Clone High parodied) especially I feel sort of defined the concept as Westerners have known it for the longest time. So, when you tell a western comics artist to do a comic about people's lives and their drama, they'll think Eastenders, and then subtly suggest that you should leave their office.
>>152082361Does stuff like Peanuts and Cathy count or are comic strips too far different?
>>152082422Too different I'd say. Gag-a-day strips don't go into as much detail even in their occasional longer storylines.Ironically (might be recency bias since it just finished storytiming here as well) When Funky Winkerbean started having delusions of grandeur, and went from being a gag-a-day comic to a more serious drawn out look at the lives of its cast might be a better comparison, in that it is (sort of. Closer might be more accurate) what we'd consider to be a SoL comic as we know it today - a depiction of the lives of the characters in the strip.I actually stopped reading the storytime shortly after drunky drunkybean and Lisa's cancer coming back since it got too depressing for me to care about. So, take my opinion for what it's worth.
I remember when I was still a functional adult that visited stores to browse floppies in seeing so many indie comics by Oni Press Publications. Good times, I think I still have some individual issues of Blue Monday in one of my boxes.
>>152082906>Chynna>2021part of me is happy she is still doing alright for herself all these years later and thought these were a cute readit filled a void for some modern kind of Archie group that still didn't strayed to far from being grounded
>>152082949She's doing pretty well Wrote an Addams Family comic a few years back for IDWShe said in an interview in 2020 that she still hopes she can do Blue Monday again full-time
>>152075815I miss 2000's Oni Press
>>152083862I just miss the 2000s in general.
>>152082361Yeah thats a good point. People like picking up SoL manga but those are a lot more idealized.
>>152083074>She said in an interview in 2020 that she still hopes she can do Blue Monday again full-timeFucking hope so, I need the end now.
>>152074155
>>152082361‘EastEnders’? Are you British? Isn’t that a little too dark?
>>152087077>are you britishNo, it's just the first soap opera that popped into my head. I do like British television, if it counts.
