Rapunzel in a comfy nightie reading a good book by candlelight edition!

Discuss Tangled the movie, the series, or whatever else that you might want to say about our blonde hero princess! Be nice, try not to hurt Punzie's feelings!

>Did you just totally memoryhole that the first third to half of the Tangled movie is Eugene being a lying piece of shit and trying multiple times to trick Raps into giving up her dream so he can just get the crown?
There are two big differences between the lies Eugene tells and the lies that Cass tells. First is stated agenda, despite the tricks Eugene doesn't hide his intentions or his identity from Rapunzel. He makes it clear what he wants from Raps is to leave with the satchel and part ways with as 'unlikely friends'. Cass meanwhile not only makes a false promise to Rapunzel to return her to her tower, but goes as far as to fabricate a story where she rescued Raps from ruffians in order to win her trust, something Eugene never had to do. Second, is that Cass knows better. Eugene at that point in his life was still a hardened scoundrel, it's only natural he would try to cheat his way out of an obligation. Cass meanwhile is a woman of honor, not only did she have the benefit of a much better upbringing but she also knows who Rapunzel is. Cass knows full well that this is her friend that's she's manipulating, and is perfectly ok with lying to her to cover her own ass. Like does nobody find it even a little messed up that Cass never even attempted to converse with Raps to undo Gothel's control while her mind was like that? Every single conversation between Cass and Raps in that episode is Raps trying to share more about her life and Cass blocking her at every instance. It's the complete opposite of the movie where Eugene is consistently trying to learn more about Rapunzel, while Rapunzel is on guard and hesitant because of the lies Gothel told her. When you think about, how Cass acts in Day One has much more in common with how Gothel acts in the movie than with Eugene acts.

>He only ends up even giving her his actual name because they randomly get caught in a situation where he thinks he is going to die anyway
>This is such a bizarre misread of the situation, they "fell in love" in <36 hours based wholly on a series of contrived events while knowing almost nothing about each other.
I'm not denying there were coincidences involved with Eugene and Raps meeting each other, every story is based off coincidence in someway but to suggest that Eugene and Raps falling in love was based wholly on a series of contrivances is grossly misleading. Tangled's plot is constantly driven by the decisions of its characters, let's break it down.
>Eugene wants his satchel therefore he leads Raps to a seedy tavern to scare her
>Raps needs Eugene as her guide therefore she faces her fear of ruffians to stick up for him
>Raps' kind and jubilant nature inspires the tavern-goers therefore Hookhand leads them down a secret passage
>Max is obsessed with capturing Flynn Rider therefore he knocks down a post to create a bridge for himself, causing the dam to burst, flooding the valley.
Which then leads to the scene of Eugene telling Rapunzel his real name, you can try and downplay it as much you want but ultimately there was nothing compelling Eugene to give up his secret to Raps, he could have decided to take his name to the grave but he doesn't. In his last moments he instead chooses to open up and in doing so he allows Raps the confidence to open up about her own secrets which then allows her to realize the solution to their situation and escape. Eugene and Raps choosing to be mutually open with each other saved both their lives, beautiful. You wanna talk about contrived? Nothing in the movie is as contrived as say... Cass and Raps stumbling upon a magic wand that can alter memories and Cass accidentally wiping Raps' mind, like are we serious here?

>The difference is that the former had a 20 minute TV episode that was never going to entertain the possibility of romantic development and the latter had a 100 minute movie specifically written to be a love story.
So then we're in agreement that Day One shouldn't be used as evidence for Cass x Raps? Wonderful. Bit of friendly advice to any aspiring writers in this thread, if you're trying to manufacture some romantic chemistry between two characters the last thing you wanna do is deliberately remind people of a better romance they could be watching instead. I don't know if Day One meant to imply this but I wanna take a hammer to this idea I see people draw from this episode, that Rapunzel was just this doe-eyed little lost puppy that could've been swept off her feet by just anybody and that you could swap out Eugene with just anybody and the romance would work just as well. This reading of Raps' character that eliminates all agency from her is not only disgusting, but it's something that's wholly unsupported by the movie. One of the first scenes in the movie with Eugene and Raps together is Raps shutting down his attempts at flirting, Rapunzel may be naive but she isn't stupid, she is constantly on guard for threats and is unabashed by Eugene's attempts at flirting and trickery. She only begins to let her guard down as soon as Eugene begins to let his down, and from there the basis of their love begins to take shape. Cass and Raps by contrast never get to turn that corner because Cass is always putting up barriers and pushing Raps away, once again I reiterate that Raps losing her memories to begin with is a direct result of Cass's stubbornness and lack of openness. You see it was never Eugene standing in Cass's way it was always herself and her own descions that stood in the way of love, it was never going to be Cass, it was always going to be Eugene.
