The 40K setting is in a strange social position where, as a creative work, it is very appealing to people for many diverse reasons. Recall that Warhammer 40K originated out of a very specific british schoolboy demographic, and is catered toward appealing to juvenile males with fascination with warfare and history and science fiction. Of course the hobby grows and starts to appeal to a wider group of people, some who are not interested in certain aspects like collecting and painting the models, perhaps they are more into the novels and characters, or perhaps they have only a superficial like for the aesthetic. So essentially, every person or clique has different reasons for being into 40K, sometimes for non-overlapping reasons. Be it's participatory nature, it's the kind of setting where fans are encouraged to invest time and attention and creative spirit into the hobby, which makes it very easy to become personally attached to the story and characters or aesthetic or whatever specific factor is appealing. The problem comes with either changes to the product itself (new or updated units, characters, themes) or when the different fan cliques become aware of and antagonistic toward each other. That's where this "gatekeeping" mentality comes from, each clique resents "their 40K" being "ruined" by other fans, to whatever degree their personal appeals are being changed or disregarded. 40K is the perfect storm of getting mad about other people liking your thing for the wrong reasons. Quite ironic, since it was always someone else's thing the whole time, fans just get tricked into thinking it's "theirs" because of the emotional investment..
