The problem with most of nutrek is that it's far too much suffering porn. LD and SFA are the only two nutrek shows to be optimistic and hopeful, while also having serious plotlines in the background. Even PROD was a victim of that. SNW tries to have it's fun episodes, but everyone knows it's ending on a very, VERY dark and somber note. PIC was constant miseryporn, killing off a bunch of beloved characters just for drama, and STD was also dark as shit for 3 seasons before trying to course correct in 4 and 5, but it was too late by then.

I'm not saying the gayshit isn't egregious, even now, but it wasn't what killed the shows. It was just a very big wound on an even bigger trauma. Even SFA has a gay main cast member (klingon w/ the tactical skirt), but his defining characteristic isn't how gay he is. It's how much of a loyal, kindhearted friend he is. Compare that to staments & culver in STD. Their defining characteristics were being gay and toxic, rather than chief medical officer & chief engineer. Reno from DISC is in this, and is also still gay, but it's not her defining trait. Picardo gives a wonderful performance as the EMH, as always. It's not the typical star trek format, and I don't mean that in a bad way. I mean it as it's filmed more like a slice of life, rather than an episodic space opera. The first episode might have you doubting it, or it might hook you instantly. If you have doubts, watch episode 2 and 3. If you're partway through 2 and still aren't interested, it might not be your cup of tea, but I think you'll be surprised.
