>>152846950I really like the sword getting in front of the side panels.
>>152846974the series is full of these neat little details
>>152846941This panel may be the absolute peak of Cartoony Rabbit Usagi. It really feels like Sakai got the model dialed in here, it's just a completely different model. Also, the nature/landscape art here is great. If it were a different cartoonist I might have said some of his best, but I've seen the rest of the comic, so.
>>152846970Usagi's dad looks suspiciously Kenichi shaped.
>>152846974The tassels of his hat do the same thing more subtly in panel 1. It's a technique to give the art aa sense of three-dimensionality, and it works really well. That snout projects right out of the page. Just goes to show you how good a cartoonist Sakai already was at this early stage.
as much we praise the serie's historical accuracy, it also buys wholeheartedly into the samurai myth and plays it completely straight. which is fun, I might add.

Back at it again, but this time I've got a bit of an edge case I want to go over so we're all on the same page here. I'm tentatively counting one of the Dogora students (here >>152846976) and Kaiko the silk merchant as wolves, (one of the bandits in the Zylla chapter is also a wolf but I think he's less of an edge case) I only started counting wolves since one of the gamblers in the last volume was so distinctly wolf-y but I realise that a lot of the time it's going to be difficult to distinguish a wolf from a dog or a fox, so should I keep counting wolves? Anyways, here are our updated totals, as you can see the variety in species is already started to dwindle, but you could put that down to most of this volume only really featuring Usagi, Gen, and Katsuichi>+1 Warthog>+1 Lion>+3 Wolves(?)>+1 Pig>+3 Tigers>+1 Beaver>Total: 41
>>152847329Huh. So Usagis dad had a history of not giving up all of the villages food. Shame it didn't work out for him, but I guess that's no way to get ahead in feudal Japan.
>>152848561I'd count clear wolves and "possibly wolves" separately. There's going to eventually be a general merger of all the animals becoming "generic furry", so I think being clear about what's a clear species and what's you guessing will be worthwhile.

>>152847393RIP helper lady.
I can't get over how people call Kenichi a cuck. Usagi is a homeless, poor, single vagabond. Meanwhie Kenichi has "stolen" from Usagi his first love, his home, his father's position in their home village (one which Usagi should typically inherit) and Usagi's only son is calling Kenichi "dad" and loves him deeply. People keep saying how Jotaro looks and acts exactly as Usagi, but then, decades later, the "bowman on the roof" panel in >>152847350 comes back with a vengeance. Aside from Mariko being dumb (on multiple levels), Kenichi is the "loser rival" archetype who has actually won the lottery of life, while the hero has almost nothing to show.
>>152847400Mifune: "I'm not trapped in here with you, YOU'RE trapped in here with ME!"
>>152847403Aw fuck...
>>152847409Hikiji?!
Entirely speculative, but imagining how Stan might draw Usagi's dad nowadays. The dad's design was clearly just the Usagi design of the time but angular, yet it no longer matches Usagi as his design's evolved- most notably, his side tufts of fur went from subtle downturned elements of the curve of his head to sideburns jutting out like Scrooge McDuck, meaning his dad's head construction of just being the same thing but flatter no longer makes sense

>>152851237Related topic actually came up last year. I beleive according to the semi-official timeline published in the TRPG Usagi and Kenichi are supposed to be around 12-14 right here. Although they certainly don't look like it and comparing usual cultural norms of the time period for when boys would begin samurai training they would be 8-10.
>>152847416Lol, the triforce....wait, does this comic actually predate LttP?!
>>152851294Yes it was (spoilered, newcomers read on at your own peril) issue #11 of the IDW run, another flash back to Lil' Usagi and Kenichi in the village and their childhood rivalry for Mariko's affection, see the page here https://files.catbox.moe/tfyt4b.jpgYou basically got modern Dadsagi down to a T, well done drawfriend.
>>152847452Dude you were literally saying a minute ago how overconfidence would be your downfall.
>>1528513271991 is when LttP released, 1989 is this volumes release. But the answer is actually simpler than that. "The Triforce" is actually a historically used clan Mon. I beleive multiple clans have used it though it is most associated with the Hojo clan.
>>152847457Gunichi you cowardly bitch.
>>152851368Huh, thank you anon. I'd forgotten that entirely, yeah. Stan softened the design a bit but otherwise decided to still give him the downturned tufts as opposed to bigger sideburns like Usagi has now, which makes sense but is interesting- it kind of unchains his design from Usagi's.This is making me wonder too, do we ever get a mention of Usagi's mother?
>>152851029That would be a fun count to start, maybe next year. >characters with dialogue balloons who have not broken Buddhist vows by taking life and are thus spared judgement and sentencing in Lord Enma's court in the afterlife

Not saying this as a massive negative- he's making the mother of all eggs, can't fret over every egg, etc etc, worse inking and bgs is the price he paid for ensuring regular constant work for over four decades, it's just the choice he make- but it IS something he did and that is very notable whenever we do the yearly storytime>>152851569Closest I can think is a slightly horny drawing of Tomoe in a pin-up samurai armour where she's got midriff showing

>>152846974Have we counted times when art or text escapes a panel in a storytime yet? I am not sure if I will be able to participate much this time around, I've counted 99 in book 1 and 62 in book 2 (this thread) if anyone wants to continue the tally, if not I'll try to count it next year.

Hello all, Auditanon, resident bureaucrat here. After taking the suggestion of an anon last thread, I will now start count visible death screams and death rattles. After last year counting honourable screams, I'm doing the reverse in counting something that's bad fortune. Fleeing screams are way below me, so I won't do it this year. And now, without further ado, here are yesterday's and today's total counts in the death rattle department.
>>152853482No "Floo"?
>>152851682He's certainly willing to take a life, I can't recall if he's done so on panel or not though.
Dang, I basically missed the first two threads! Always glad it's still going strong.
The Annual Usagi story time. Come for the funny animals cutting each other down, stay for the How It's Made sections and financial history
>>152852318Gunichi would either get himself killed in some self-inflicted poetic justice situation or he would redeem himself with a heroic sacrifice. Either way Usagi would end up being able to sidestep the awkward issue of directly making him pay for his treachery.
>>152847113Assuming Katsuichi went for the neck, he stopped centimeters from Usagi's ear.

>>152853514No "Floo" in this or the previous storytime. I will add new ones as we go along.
Dishonor falls upon me, I bit more than I could chew with the comic/panel counter project and I ended the day without reading the storytime today. I'll still work on it but not use it for this year's storytime, though I'll take notes to make it work eventually.Though looking back at the previous storytime, I wonder why >>152834954 has Usagi say nothing in his speech bubble, is that normally pointed out?>>152850647Wonderful work Anon!>>152848634Yeah "Canidae" or other taxonomical families nay be good for when it gets to that blurry line>>152853929Careful, Icarus
>>152854361>I wonder why >>152834954 has Usagi say nothing in his speech bubble, is that normally pointed out?Being the first story and being it has no dramatic purpose in its use I can see, betting it's just a mistake, he did the balloon there then changed his mind on where some line would go, or forgot to write the line there, or something
>>152853014Why didn't you just post it?
>>152847711I will never not be surprised that Genta of all the peasant characters is the one who makes later cameos. And actually becomes a samurai in Senso
I sketched some possible merch designs some time ago hoping to have it digital and ready before the storytime. Unfortunately I barely have time to draw these days. I will try to get it finished before Easter.
>>152855074Second idea is simpler Btw there's a restaurant named Usagi Sushi here in Warsaw that uses Usagi's head shape as logo. Best sushi in the area IMO. I made a little clay Usagi and thought of giving it to them.
>>152855082So there is, lmao

>>152853929Most of the mints were in the Edo region if I remember right though I think there was also one relatively near Ishida's city.
>>152855322The first issue came out already, anon, you can go read it- we just kinda decided to wait on storytiming it so we can do it at the end of this year's annual

>>152855325Welp, I went to take a look at internet, hoping to find info on whether or not they minted gold and silver in same places or in different ones (because I recalled that silver was predominantly used around certain region of Japan while gold was used more around Kyo).Instead I found this interesting bit."Early Modern TimesMiddle of the 16th century - First half of the 19th centuryIn the 16th century, gold and silver coins were minted following active mine developments by feudal warlords. Oda Nobunaga fixed the exchange rates between gold, silver and copper coins, and Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered the mintage of gold and silver coins, including Tensho Oban gold coins. Tokugawa Ieyasu increased his control over gold and silver mines, secured mintage technology and systems, and issued Keicho silver and gold coins in 1601. The Tokugawa Shogunate government subsequently issued Kan'ei Tsuho copper coins, within the process of establishing a unified monetary system called the “tri-metallic monetary system,” based on gold, silver and copper coins. The tri-metallic monetary system was significant because it was a unique monetary system based on the standardized currencies introduced by the central government. The tri-metallic monetary system was a relaxed unification system, which allowed local feudal lords to issue currencies other than the three standardized ones, such as clan notes to be circulated within their territories."Source: https://www.imes.boj.or.jp/cm/english/history/content/
