Here's our updated totals for this volume. I've decided not to count the ninja turtles, if you really want to know how many there are I'm guessing it's around 10, counting both continuities that crossed over with usagi and the Mom and Dad portraits in this issue but you're free to disqualify any of those, it doesn't really matter. Book 3447 Usagis (1248 total)754 Panels (1986 total)7 Neko Ninja (88 total)Mogura holding at 19Here is the 1000th Usagi panel. Very cool. You may be wondering how I'm counting the Neko ninja, since obviously we had a long story with a ton of appearances, yet the number is still comparatively low. This count is not for panels but the number of distinct Neko ninja, to get an idea of how large their clan is. For small battles - the bridge fight in v1 for example, and the Turtle Soup & Rabbit Stew fight in this volume - it's easy to keep track of how many Neko show up and die. Looking back at the bridge, three initially show up and attack, then we see three bodies on the ground. Five more show up, three more die, then the last two. 8 total. In this volume, we have the "woodcutter," one guy. Then in Turtle Soup & Rabbit Stew, four initially rush Usagi, and then a fifth appears from behind; in the last scene a sixth has joined the fray, while the initial four are dead or dying. In these cases, Stan is very consistent. On the other hand, when we have scenes like Mifune's castle infiltration, Stan just throws reason out the window, and the Neko multiply from panel to panel. Thus we go with the largest number, out of multicultural respect for their sacred clan art of breeding no jutsu.>>152860522>>152860582Very funny, thank you Murder. I need to read more Sergio.

>>152855814Your scholarship has been noted and added to the archives.> I recalled that silver was predominantly used around certain region of Japan while gold was used more around KyoSo gold was used and encouraged by the shogunate based in Edo, but Osaka preferred using silver. But that simple statement understates just how hakama-on-head retarded Osaka's money policy was. They didn't just silver, they only used silver ON TRANSACTIONAL NOTES.Okay so what does that mean? Let's consider a scenario in Feudal America 2026 if we used Osaka policy. You order dinner at your local wings-and-burger joint (TN: a kind of American izakaya). The total for your meal is $10.75. The server at the counter tells you as much. This kind of common, everyday transaction you pay with cash or your credit card. Simple enough right? You take your meal to go and you go home. You open your mailbox and you have a letter informing you that your rent is due in 15 days. The wording of the letter is something like "Please pay 1200 by the 15th of the month." 1200 what? Not $1200 USD, but 1200 BRITISH POUNDS. But you don't carry £ notes. That's okay. Your landlord doesn't actually want British pounds either, he's simply FORCED TO CARRY OUT HIS RECORDED TRANSACTIONS IN THEM. You do some quick conversions and cut him a check for the equivalent amount in US dollars. He cashes your check. He converts the USD back to pounds IN HIS LEDGER in case the government authorities want to check his books. >>152865448>seems like every artist I know uses that. Its one of the most robust art programs currently available with lots of QOL stuff and an almost endless pool of resources for learning how to use it, unless someone only draws a few times a year is a good investment whether they're a hobbyist or a professional
>>152865297Realising now what I want is basically the comic book The Swindling Indies but with animals, which is funny considering the artist of said comic is also the artist of Blacksad. Anyway I recommend it to anyone here that hasn't read it >>152853237>>152865448That is really good and just proves my point of how cool it'd be. Though I guess maybe I'd want it a different animal, I'm ok with the white rabbit protags being specifically the Usagi lineage. Your drawing is pretty good at it too, I like he feels like he's got an arrogant expression.>I figured. seems like every artist I know uses that. It's pretty good, there's a reason it supplanted Photoshop in terms of being the mainstream illustration tool, even if they've done stupid decisions in recent years.>>152865327based KanbeAnyway here's today's additions- Jei, Shingen, Spot; plus as before, a couple touch ups in others. I'm realising in the same way I'm not doing Katsuichi's eyepatch for spoiler's sake I should have Gen's horn full, but eh. Sorry anyone being spoiled by this drawingYesterday's- >>152850647
>>152860220Look is Michael Mouse
>>152860141You know, I liked better when you weren't sure if Jei was an actual supernatural thing or just some schizo with strange luck>>152860457This is the second time Usagi puts the woodcutters in a situation were they could be executed for stealing.
>>152860602We never saw Jei this sane, relatively speaking, again.
>>152860943Thank you anon, wouldn't have able to understand them otherwise!
>>152860489This wouldn't be that weird if we still saw some non mammals here and there.
>>152859703NOOAAAAAAHHH
>>152860500Oh yes, the Neko ninja are well know for being green, semi amphibious and carry a shell.
>>152860515https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=md9jMYg15-A
>>152860304Remind me, what's the dramatic irony of Noriyuki sending Funny Animal Ieyasu (or Hidetoda?) a Muramasa blade?
>>152865821Katsuichi looks so uncomfortable being next to Koro. >Don't make eye contact, he will go away....
>>152847492I think Usagi was in the wrong here, there is nothing wrong to not want to die on a lost battle just to serve as a human shield for your suicidal lord.
>>152864256>>1528657972012 TMNT is probably the best animated Usagi we'll ever get.
>>152865871>You know,So... you liked him better in this one episode only?I mean, he gets fucking disintegrated by a lightning bolt, the fact that he returns as a character at all proves that he's supernatural.
>>152863799>>152863807>>152863820>>152863843>Jei's blade isn't black
>>152865929IIRC in a later crossover he mistakes them for kappa.>>152866023>t. Warthog
>>152860582>Not taking the center first chanceI'd be pissed too.
>>152860662As far as Singapore this early into the comic, huh. That's some reach! I didn't read these letters the last time I partook in this storyline, so maybe I shall read a few this time.
>>152860366Nigga can't even give his crabs a dip in Feudal Japan
>>152859716what's mail?
>>152860925>Is this the most retarded Usagi ever getsOh man you haven't seen the half of it yet. Usagi has his moments but he's never beating the Dumb Bunny rap. Wait until you see how he gets down a mountain fast.
>>152866033Which is wild considering the season he shows up in is the weakest season of the show.
>>152866023It is better to die for your lord than to live for yourself
>>152864129As far as I understand the Power Pack one came much later, after Calvin and Hobbes ended. The cameo here is from the late 80s, only a couple years after Calvin and Hobbes started syndication.
>>152866033Am I wrong to feel that Usagi is kind of an unofficial member of the TMNT at this point?
>>152866301Not necessarily, but people might give you a groaning side eye here since they're tired of how much Usagi's presence online gets tied to the TMNT
>>152866320I get that, hell it was through TMNT that I was introduced to him. But I'm in the camp of he can stand on his own merits.
>>152866070I mean, there is possible deniability, the black blade could have been a trick of the light, the wound might have been survivable, the lighting might have blow him away.
>>152866503I mean I personally think that Jei as a character should have ended with Grasscutter but I guess Stan just needed to keep someone as a perpetual thorn in Usagis side that is more personal instead of Hikiji/Hebi/Neko clan politics or the assassin guild always bungling to get him out of the way.
>>152866077https://youtu.be/0WFv2E69FSA?si=bYvwES3BgmPCSYfZ
>>152864981Would.
>people spoiling Jei stuffharrumph
>>152866557Everyone is all over the rabbit waifus until they are overwhelmed by the sex drive
>>152866545Jei is one of the most unique recurring characters. Much of the comic is drawing from Japanese movies, folklore, history, manga, etc., but Jei is a weird out-of-place horror villain who refuses to go away.
>>152866651Yes, but I feel like after being forced from Inazuma just to take over a new host introduced solely for the purpose to make him look like he used to I feel like a lot of the mystique was gone from him. Hes overused and loses a lot of the fear factor. For me as a reader it becomes less oh fuck it's Jei! Oh, it's fucking Jei whose just gonna show up and be spooky and still be forced back no matter what creepy shit or ancient evil God he's tied to now or yadda yadda
>>152859753I appreciate that Usagi's face is actually drawn five times, and not just xerox'd
>>152861545First time?
>>152860309It occurs to me that she should be able to smell the blood. If Gen can smell remnant blood on Usagi's sword across the room, never mind Zato-Ino...
>>152866832The blood would also probably still leave some smear or trace left in the blade, it's a bit of "ok sure why not"
>>152847795>in Boris the Bear #1, Boris kill Usagi, so in Usagi's first issue why don't you have Usagi kill Boris?Decided to look that up and wow, he wasn't kidding. Honestly if there's one thing I REALLY do not miss about pre-2010s culture, it's shlock like this being passed around as "parody".
>>152866870I bet it was a riot in the context of the time.Like the munchkins.People were staggering with laughter at the lollipop guild back in the day. Hard to comprehend.
>>152866832>>152866865It doesn't really hold up to close scrutiny, you'd need at least a couple of seconds to pull your hood off and press it in place to wipe the blade as she draws it, which is way longer than I'd expect Tomoe to hold that spear up there for.
>>152866633Hippity hoppity
>>152866870I doubt anyone took it very seriously.
>>152863773There's a muscleman flexing in the panel above.
>>152866832I think it helps that both Gen and Zato seem to be both older and much more experienced in killing, to the point where they've honed their sense of smell to facilitate it.
>>152866747A fundamental problem with any recurring villain is that they inevitably become jobbers if they stick around long enough, since the hero has plot armor.
>>152867128This comic actually does really well against it, except anything to do with Jei
>>152865135Lotta FOOLISH SAMURAIYou know Katsuichi would be voiced by Mako if that was still possible
>>152866870I don't really think it ever truly went away, they're just restricted to legally distinct characters now. Stuff like I Hate Fairyland and Beneath the Trees sort of fill in this kind of void, but outside the occasional Public Domain parody neither of those are touching anyone else's characters out of fear people might take it the wrong way.
>>152860232not [spoilers]bridge of tears?[/spoilers]
>>152866023He was, but he'll learn the error of his ways in a storytime or two.
>>152866023>t. doesn't understand bushido
>>152868594I suspect it's Usagi that doesn't understand Bushido. He should ask Gen about it
>>152865954The Murasama blade keeps killing Tokugawas. No other clan, specifically the Toku's.
>>152868662he understands it all too well...
>>152866870I find a lot of Usagi fanart on Pinterest, if you can believe it, but no way to source it unless whoever uploaded the picture included a source. And you know how your old mate Enmanon feels about proper documentation.
>>152865278You're definitely not the only one who feels that way about low-effort (implying there's such thing as high effort) LLM sloppa.>>152864114Gen always had a noble spirit. In many ways he has an even nobler spirit than Usagi. We get to his origin story pretty soon, remember this post.
>>152859552Whos. That. Pokemon!
>>152864300>>152865278>>152865779Fair's fair, I wasn't going to make a habit of it anyway.
>>152866870He did get his revenge, if it's any cosolation.
>>152860309Images you can feel.
>>152865821Looking forward to the final piece, it already looks amazing so far.
>>152868472That one usually draws a more brooding suffering. Also we can cope with the happy alternate ending. Usagi multiverse yo.
>>152866747This is very true. If he got one of the main cast like in terms of possession or did something Teru Teru Bozu tier again, maybe he'd get some of that menacing air back. Stray Dog and the orphanage would be a brutal option I think, could explain why he didn't appear in WhereWhen/Senso IIRC.I dunno, Jei's last appearance was particularly boring aside from Usagi's "oh shit!" when he realized who cousin Oriber was talking to. Only other option I can think of is actually doing the Jei+Sasuke fight. Would be another good target for possession.
>>152866545It sucks that it can be years before we see any plot resolution or call back to some villain or group vowing to kill Usagi I'm looking at you league of Assasins
>>152869086I liked your image, it was consistent enough (even though it doesn't look like Jei proper) and looked sufficiently fanfictionish and artistic.
>>152868909>90s Usagi >THIS AIN'T YOUR DADDY'S YOJIMBO
>>152868909He's born to meddle and Frank
>>152859858so this is Mr Sakai's wild ride ive always heard about.>>152859865Lizards can howl now?
>>152870485Yes.
>>152865552Would it be more realistic if it went through the foot?
looks like the maintenance period ended. >>152871001
>>152870663>>152870663First Frank of the year!(I recognize the paint 3D circle of shame.)
>>152870824Probably, but he wouldn't be able to wipe away the blood that way.
>>152865680What's neat was that it was foreshadowed in Usagi's backstory with his teacher, how the sword reflects the soul and how killing corrodes it. This dude has so much blood on his hands his sword is pure black.
>>152859531bnuuy
I'm surprised these threads are doing sort of well.
>>152878236It’s a tradition.
>>152878236There's only so many years someone can see these threads before they get curious and give it a read. Once that happens they're hooked.
Keeping this thread alive for further conversations (boy, the dragon bellow sure was popular one!)
>>152860261>Cheese dip!
>>152881413Its the big one where the books really finds its footing and themes
>>152882197Yeah, Dragon Bellow is where Usagi really kicks off. Not that the series ever got any less silly but earlier stories were less refined, more goofy and lacked a lot of Stan's famous attention to detail
>>152882264Yeah there's enough characters introduced beforehand that you should start from the beginning but Dragon Bellow is the first time it all really starts to click
My apologies to fans of Big Cheese, I'm my own master now.>A wounded Neko Ninja, the former kashira of the clan, leans against a zaisu>Lord Hebi watches out a window, unable to meet the ninja's eye>a wooden prosthetic hangs by his side, the design of some karakuri master from the Island of Iturup. He speaks.Kas...>Kashira delivers a report on the Dragon Bellow Conspiracy to Big SnakeWhy are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel my leg and my arm, even my shurikens...The village I lost...the comrades I’ve lost...won’t stop hurting. It's like they’re all still there.>reaching a crescendo of emotion, the ninja slams his fist to the tatami, then grabs Lord Hebi by the armYou feel it too, don’t you? I’m the one who got caught up with Miyamoto Usagi. A ronin beyond feudal lords...even the Geishu. And I was the parasite below, feeding off the yojimbo’s power.>Lord Hebi reaches under the ninja's haori as it flaps in the breeze, helping him up into the zaisu>Their eyes finally meet. Kashira continues. We came after him in the Northern Province. Then Adachigahara...Usagi just...keeps meddling. Learning traditional crafts in his musha shugyo. Getting stronger and wiser... Who knows how bushido now? Lord.>Kashira rises, with new strength in his voiceI’m gonna make him give back our past...Take back everything that we’ve lost. And I won’t meditate...>Kashira places his hand on Lord Hebi's shoulder pad. They stare deeply into each other's eyes.Until we do.>in the distance, a smoke signal rises. Hebi and Kas can both understand what it means. "Approaching Neko Village">Tired from the effort, Kashira flops back into the zaisu. Our new Neko Village. >Outside the window, they watch other Neko ninja running across rooftops, towards the signal.I don’t know how long it’ll take, but I’ll make it bigger, better than before.
>>152883030>grabs lord Hebi by the armhuehuehue!
>>152882726I think you could skim it a bit but there's so few issues to get through you might as well read it all
>>152859531Very nice of you to storytime Usagi during eid OP, its like my very own eid present
funny how this thread is still alive. >>152883960
>>152878418>>152879753I get it, but the board is deader than ever.
>>152885826It's always been dead, nothing new under the sun
>>152866920Plus she would have probably twisted the blade, too and that would have been the end.
>>152886055It's deader now than ever.
>>152859531THIS bastard again?? Why don't they just fuck and get it over with?
>>152859703Stan's art is weird as hell. The women, regardless of age, are attractive, while the dudes are all ugly as shit. Never "Ok" or "handsome". Granny there is pipe-worthy.
>>152887529You're retarded.
>>152890312Ah, shit. That was insensitive. I didn't consider there would be faggots here that found the dudes attractive. To each his own. Bust one for me.
