Along with the letters I think that's why Confrontation came back, as well as the wave of Pucy revisionism. As you can see from the recent BCI, the letters also allow Lucy to blame her tsundere bullshit on Mike.Ironically even Taeshi has issues with the omnibus retcons, although of course that's only because of the parts that undermine Lucy's claim to sympathy.

Real people act with emotional and social nuance, modifying themselves to fit in or performing what they feel in the moment to be safe and desirable, and Mike is currently depressed and trivialized with his entire identity resting on what other's think of him, he's bound to be jerky and mopey. Plus a lot of the character's conflicts are tied to socialization over factors like politics and action unlike other stories and what largely drives us in real life (the former, being politics, and in-group ideaologies).
