After reading all of the original stories, I have a better understanding of Jessica Drew beyond "Carol Danver's friend". Although she feels like someone else than I am used to from recent things.Wolfman probably has the strongest overall mood. Spider-Woman feels like she is also a mysterious night creature even if her own thoughts betray that. She feels desperate and unable to fit in as a human. But pretty bad decisions in terms of supporting cast.Gruenwald seems to inherit the basic setting, but lightens it up slightly over time and apply more explanations for Spider-Woman's "how". Lindsay definitely is an improvement in terms of supporting cast over Wolfman's, and you have more bad guys who seem viable to become regulars. Breaking in group therapy because of her reluctance to reveal she is Spider-Woman is a standout page. While Brothers Grimm had their best showing in the last story, I don't think the Mr. Doll's soul connection was in Wolfman's plans for them.I hate pretty much the next year's worth of comics. Jumps suddenly to a different setup, Jessica's personality seems to have been completely overwritten, lack of interesting stories, Jessica has really poor showings in everything, and the dialogue feels exploitative of her. I think the most important thing is that this might have influenced the creation of Scourge of the Underworld since the first appearance was dressing as an old woman and killing Enforcer. DeMatteis's one issue story is better because of a better writer.Claremont tries to realign Spider-Woman, even if she seems to be much more well adjusted than in the beginning. Some of his usual traits pop up though (X-Men! Yakuza! Viper and Silver Samurai! People wondering if two people are related!). She seems to have stopped taking her meds, but less pheromones influence than before. (1/2)

There are a lot of minor changes to Jessica's history under him, but I don't think most of them stuck. I like Nocenti's part a lot, but I wonder how much of it was Gruenwald dictating the plots to her. The writing itself is her though. And ending with a dead heroine is distinct, even if she comes back soon.Art is consistently good. I think someone retelling her life could make something that works well, but dunno if I'd recommend this to others as is.As an aside, she is completely bullshit about what "gliding" is, even ignoring the early case she seems to glide out of a window wearing a nightgown. It would have been better to claim that was one of her powers instead of her suit.This image might be the best summation of the series overall though.
