>>153173978It's a pretty typical "cleaning the blade" motion, but it is notable enough here that it's no doubt intentional (even though Inazuma wouldn't have learned it from the same place, though maybe she remembered seeing it once she started learning).
>>153174390>typicalTypical? Man, that's some crazy "secret master technique" shit! Normal human beings have to wipe the blade with a cloth, they can't just flick the blade and have the blood fly off perfectly like literal magic.
>>153174418Typical in a media sense. It looks fucking cool too, so you see it way more than people probably actually did and of course it looks much cooler and more effective than it ever was in real life.

>>153174862>Austin: Hijiki, son, they call yourself the Shadow Lord but you hee-haw, like a jackass!!
>>153164249Speaking of Dororo this definitely a reference to it.
>>153174879>mach speedsYeah, that is basically the problem right there. Try drying water off a knife IRL by flicking it (carefully!) once and then examine the remaining layer of water and consider that blood is thicker and harder to remove. This is the kinda thing Mythbusters used to do, I bet they could have figured out how fast your sword would have to move to effectively wipe it clean. It would definitely be superhuman
>>153175075The tip of a sword would be moving faster since you'd have a longer lever arm than a knife. Irl you'd still probably want to wipe down the blade before it goes in the scabbard for who knows how long, but it's for rule of cool, and wiping down the blade is coolness debt
>>153175165Usagi and the other main characters don't do it, it's literally just these two.
>>153171072>Conflict between Buddhism and native Shinto/shamanism?I did some research into this. Buddhism and Shinto, as we all know, were highly syncretic with each other. They meshed together so well that after the Meiji Restoration, the new government had to issue a decree formally separating what was Buddhist and what was Shinto in an effort to re-Japanify if you will the Shintoism from "foreign" Buddhist elements. It's not that there was never conflict between Buddhism and Shinto, but Buddhism came out ahead so quickly and so pervasively that it was a one-sided contest and Buddhism would enjoy unprecedented supremacy ahead of Shinto right up until the aforementioned decree during the Meiji period when shinto became State Shinto with a capital S. Surprisingly, do you know what religion actually came into conflict with Buddhism in Japan? Neo-Confucianism, of all things. For a time, the Confucians were even regarded with the same suspicion as Christian converts by the Tokugawa bakufu. There was a tug of war going on all through the 1600s between the Buddhist clergy and the hardline Confucianists of the Tokugawa bureaucracy. Buddhist temples were closed and their lands seized by the government when Confucianists had more power in court, and likewise Confucian schools were closed and their lands seized when the Buddhists had more influence. The matter was only settled when Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the 'dog shogun,' ascended to the position in 1680 and the Buddhists won out, but with major concessions to the Confucian scholars in so far as Neo-Confucianism was now going to be the official political theory of the bakufu. >>153169539This dude has no chill.
>>153171197>jobs to a rock as Inazuma>jobs to a literal who as JeizumaI'm not bothered by Stan giving her via Word Of God the number one fighter spot in the cast, somewhat counterintuitively, because of scenes like this. This kind of energy that Stan puts in the comic really helps to put any power rankings into perspective. Like Katsuichi said in his duel with Nakamura Koji, on another day it could have been him that died, or both of them. All that training any of these sword saints go through and it's just one bad day or a single slip up and your career is done for no matter what your rank is or how many honors and titles you have. Of course if you don't put in the sweat and hours at all you're instantly cannon fodder to begin with, so it's not like the training is useless either, it's just very, very ephemeral and hard to translate from talking points to absolutes in practice.
>>153177452Most fiction makes up think skill in tiers, if you are lower that X level you can't hurt anyone above, but this is more realistic, even the best can't dodge every attack, some can shove a speak in your back while your sword is mid swing on the other side and whatnot
>>153177452I think a big problem is how people look at power levels. Inazuma may be the best swordfighter but she's not radiating an aura that makes people explode as soon as they get near her. real fighters can have all the skill they can dream of it doesn't mean shit if someone gets lucky with a knife.

>>153179295Very nice, Anon!
>>153172850>Huh. Where would the Goyo clan, (and Hama's temple) be then? It's close to Sanshobo's temple.Well, we don't know how far those samurai have pursued Jei, but, let's say for simplicity that somebody recognized him and they're either in or just outside of Goyo's old domain. Not long after his initial encounter with Jei, Usagi entered the Geishu province so they would met in a neighboring one. He had previous been up norrh so it's presumably to the east of Geishu. So the likely suspects are Izumo, Bingo, Hoki, and Bitchu.Of those, I think Izumo or Hoki is more likely to be where Jizonobu's temple is located. Why? Because the Gate to Yomi was located in Izumo while the resting place of Izanami is near the border between those two. Ibaraki's cave is likely the literal entrance to the Underworld.

On the other, Inazuma is such a waste of a cool character it's actively infuriating. It wasn't enough to effectively kill her off after only a handful of appearances, her carcass had to be dragged across the mud Weekend at Bernies style for countless chapters, giving you the faint hope that she might be able to make it out of all this. >>153182287My schizo theory is that Jei wasn't in full control of her body, so he was unable to regenerate his wounds like he could in his wolf forms.
>>153181906>>153181979Yes. Jei-san is just one big dumb pun by Stan The Man to have an immortal, unkillable horror movie villain like JASON for Usagi to fight. >>153182343That's not a schizo theory, it's fairly well supported by the textual evidence. Priest Ji (Jei 1) willingly made a dark pact to save Lord Goyo's daughter, Priest Hama (Jei 3) had been slowly mindbroken by Jei mentally for years to be a willing host. Inazuma's case was a lot different and the mystical sword Grasscutter was involved.

>>15318253520 years of nonstop Jei nightmares if we go by this >>153171732
>>153179348jeez, it's kind of weird how much of this comic takes place in the Chūgoku region.
>>153177918I have an upgraded edit of that meme
>>153181788I think he's pissed that Usagi might try to stop him from claiming her bounty for the same reason they're stopping the other bounty hunters. Then again Stray Dog is just kind of pissed off all the time at everyone except Matron and orphans.
>>153182577nice!
>Commission! Hellboy VS Jei from Usagi Yojimbo. Done around the same time as the BPRD and Usagi commissions, this was a lot of fun. Played around with lots of shadows.Damn if only the shogunate hadn't outlawed teppō
>>153182626Cool
>>153182626>Future Jei grabs a revolver>It turns black
>>153169488Nice
Commission by artist Chris Johnson. I like this interpretation of Jei (a wolf) being much bigger than Usagi.
>>153170159Yeah this is pretty impressiveJei og never get done like this even when attacked by huge entouragestho there's never archers when any jei's show up
>>153182730It's nice, but Jei is missing his spear tip.
>>153182793Look closer at Usagi's crotch
>>153182825Sorry man, I'm not a cat lady. Also look at the end of the shaft, there's no adhesive or anything indicating a spear tip has been attached.
>>153170560y'know i never felt that bad for inazuma as she showed up and got possessed really quick and she was made for itbut damn she didn't do anything wrong or had any connection with jei and got her life stolen
>>153171213"Sergio has a no crossover policy"Guess he changed his mind
>>153182846I admire your autistic insistence on biblically accurate weapon production but the glint of white is clearly meant to be Jei's black speartip.
>>153170659>somehow jei returned
>>153182872Nope, that's just the edge and fold of Usagi's hakama.
>>153182902Looking at it again, I'm inclined to agree. Middle fingers go out to you, Chris Johnson, you stupid retarded fuck. How dare you depict the blade of the gods as a *spits loudly* bō cuck and not a based yarichad.
>>153181979>>153182048Yeah I was gonna bring this up cause like, he's not even just a body hopper I guess it's more like he somehow prepares people for mantling, lie prepossession? I've never seen this kind of possession in another workLike I wonder if he would've actually took over senzo as a backup option if Senzo had died from something else over the years.
>>153171237oh shit will have to read that too thanks for the heads up
>>153177452Yeah while I don't think of her as the best I do subscribe to the notion shit happens so being beaten by anyone doesn't make you a shitter shit happens here
>>153178620>me on bottom right
>>153182847Welcome to the rice fields mother fucker.
>>153183107i've been through a few storytimes nowi had just never thought much about inazuma in the past but all the talk of her story being kinda fucky got me thinking more on itshe shows up, gets unlucky, and then get essentially tortured for years of issues until she dies
>>153182857To be fair you don't say no to Conan the Cimmerian
>>153169961>>153169993Those Mon are the same as this guys from early in the comic, that means Jei's introduction happens right after this flashback
>>153182535>Jei-san>JasonOhhhh goddamnit, I don't know how I never caught that.
>>153169624Why do evil gods LOVE bad hygiene SO much.
>>153183262>Right afterMy friend, I think you might have missed a little detail on Jei there which implies passage of time.
>>153183313Well a short enough a mount of time for the retainers of the lord still being in pursue of Jei.
>>153182825>quit fucking around dude get your spear out of my pants
>>153183464Remember Dorito boy or Ikeda's retainer or lady Asano and her retainer, plus Gen's dad? These Japanese take their grudges seriously.
>>153178203>Those filthy Emishi savages.>With their barbarian animal gods>And their primitive wood and straw huts>Our noble Yamato culture>With our reverence for balance with nature>And the esthetic simplicity of our hand-crafted dwellings
153181371
>>153178367Look at this cover, is the same room >>153171159 too. Dororo is a weird Manga, I love it, is full of suffering and dead children like Usagi but is always weird that the MC is suppose to be a guy with no real eyes, mouth, ears, legs, hands, etc, but in practice that doesn't affect the story at all. The anime tries to fix this detail by making him a weirdo who acts like you would think a mute, blind person would act but in doing so basically is a different protagonist.
>>153170108Maybe stating the obvious, but I think the demon didn't spare Hama because he invoked the Buddha but because the demon recognized Jei's presence in him and didn't want that smoke. Between terrifying a demon and surviving Grasscutter it seems Jei is being set up as something greater than just a regular evil spirit that got on the loose.
