Same. Got on tumblr just to find a group of people willing to still talk about the movie after a year. Threads on /tv/ lasted for about a couple months after the movie left theaters too. The only thing I'm excited about Doomsday for is to see the Thunderbolts again. It's hilarious that they're more well liked than the "official" Avengers team Marvel is trying to push. I’m trying to make my own DC Universe based loosely off of New Earth and placing it in the real world bar some Alt-History changes. The Trinity and the original members of the Justice League making their debut in the mid 70s and 80s and their Legacies starting to take over in the Late 90s/aughts while dominating the show today. My most reliable method for finding fics without having to sift through the atrocious filtering system AO3 has is to go to fics I like and see if the author has others bookmarked or if the fic itself is part of a collection.
I found this Owl House divergent canon fic where the CATs succeeded in their effort to enter Belos' mind and end up not only discovering the truth but killing him in the process (really creative scene where Eber summons the Palisman creature to attack Inner Belos while Raine has him bound in place & Darius has set the forest of his mind ablaze), and as a result Hunter is suddenly the new Emperor by the "The Right of Rule" (title of the fic by CassiePoppy45, requires an account to read).
The main fic is entirely from Hunter's perspective, and the scene I described is from a oneshot collection companion fic called "The Rest of Rule" which shows scenes from alternate perspectives or where Hunter isn't in them.
I was jumping back and forth between the two, and Chapter 17 of the mainfic was when Hunter was about to hold a press conference to reveal the truth about Unification Day, but then I reached chapter 26 of the other fic (taking place during chapter 16 of the main one but off-screen) when I read this exchange (continued in next post, character limit).

Oh, it's a little confusing without the formatting: the 5th line is italicized because the author had Eber "speak" using barks that are rendered as normal speech, and since he's the only character who does that it's always obvious when he's talking. Plot/character motive being kryptonian supremacist wanting to be a god-king of the verse and maybe trying to get back to krypton. There are two starting points I had in mind for the fic - either they were isekaied before ME1 and taking them down was the next major conflict after the Krogan Rebellion, and they're in a Hannibal Lecter-ish position until the Reaper War starts. Or more immediately, get isekai'd just in time for the Reaper invasion starting and with Shepard not being resurrected in ME2 are the one to take steps to unite the various species but under the Kryptonian flag. There'd be more of a focus on what kryptonian tech can do since the knowledge of how strong one can get under a yellow sun wouldn't be found out until a critical point in the story, in this route.

Was originally going to be a SI but I despise those so feel better using an OC.

I can understand not wanting to be tied to an existing character, especially because so many kryptonians outside of the superfamily are very straightforward in their characterisation. still, giving them a bit of a background could really pay dividends elsewhere in the writing process and provide some direction. were they part of zod's army, or part of the science guild? what part of krypton do they have roots in? you could tie them to what we know of krypton in small ways, make them more real that way.

the one thing i'd warn against, because i'm encountering it more and more as i get into one of my own longfics in particular - keep as many characters on the board as possible i.e. shepard, so you have as many options as possible during writing/outlining. try not to hamstring yourself before your story is fully formed

I have used both techniques but as of recent i've been holding off on writing easier parts up ahead mostly cause I don't want to have a disconnect with how that part comes out and how i might later write the part before I had skipped, though of course everything's fixable afterwards, I just want to avoid it

Do you guys ever find yourself connecting two important scenes and kinda catch yourselves thinking

I write smut and in the process of getting two scenes of the good stuff, so to speak, I was writing some stuff for them to do inbetween. Like i had some little relationship stuff in there but as I watch the word count go up and reread it, even when I think it fits and is kinda needed to make it not just completely mindless relationship-wise, I can't help but wonder if readers will just skip it. I worry all the more cause I remember reading some longer oneshots where I found myself doing that during long, boring scenes.

After writing this down, I think I'll actually ask the readers in the author's notes and see if any actually replies one way or the other. It can be hard to gauge if readers of my kind of stuff want shorter or longer fics; I think while multichapter longfics do very well, really short oneshots also do gangbusters, and things have kinda fell a bit now that my oneshots are easily hitting 10k mark and often beyond. Lot to think about.

The "filling out space" comment was specifically about what a LLM does whenever it is prompted for ANY response, nothing specifically to do with fics. The wishy-washy you point out is what I mean: how it restates these bullet point ideas of "the importance of print media" through each character in turn.
As for connecting scenes, it depends on the way the author writes it and generally their prose. Some authors linger too long, but some of them write it in such a way that it has the same effect as a long-shot to set tone, to provide insight to a character's mood beyond just their internal monologue via their bearing. Like the other guy said, you make this for yourself, but you've also got to think about likeminded folks who want to read those quiet moments and don't have the talent to devise them like you can. Never feel guilty about wordcount if you think it has appropriate thought put into it.

I don't really think about it conciously most times but I always try to have the character's actions shown rather than told with filling scenes like this. It's always a tug of war with this kind of stuff cause sometimes I think simply telling IS better if you want a scene to be terse and snappy, but generally it's worth to describe a character not just as mad but with a furrowed brow and wrinkled nose or stuff to that effect

Yeah, and a lot of times I like being able to get a nice higher count too just for the sense of accomplishment, it's just I had planned for the current story I'm writing to be about as long as my last and it's already double due to the establishing scenes going longer than I expected (and I broke my own rule about not including more smutty stuff than I had planned initially lol)

The Land of Steam arc is completely original, but it's hard to tell if anything of consequence actually happened because of it. No one important died. It does serve as a motivation for whatever this repurposed filler arc is, but shit does feel like fluff sometimes. I enjoyed a lot of it myself. Hebi having a dynamic with Naruto instead of being plot devices is a nice touch. Have no fucking idea how everything relating to the Uzumaki is going to go.

I often have the reoccurring thoughts of the Fate world merging with the DC Universe. Mostly inspired by the UBW anime and abridged series. Like what if Shirou met Batman? Or the rest of the JL? Sure he has the heart in the right place, but his self destructive mindset might put off some of them. Perhaps even give a reality check to Batman. I could imagine if we follow along with UBW Archer siding on the enemy’s side to kill Shirou. Archer vs the JL. That would be awesome.

I've been working on my TMNT prequel, explaining how Splinter comes to be adept enough at martial arts to teach the Turtles.
It all happens when the turtles are still babies, and Splinter goes back to the apartment to collect things he thinks he will need to survive. That includes all of Hamato Yoshis books, scrolls and his diary. Plus he gets some training help from three of Yoshi's students from his Martial Arts school.

Kept it out of the post to focus mainly on Robert because the rest is pretty disjointed right now, but I have other stuff going on too.
What I really want to do is have Robert stop by the Tower of Joy with his little group of escapees, hear Lyanna’s last words and leave for Essos with Jon. Robert would certainly come up with the idea of denying Rhaegar his son, and having Robert raise him with a secret identity would be a fun alternate version of how it went down in canon. I also think it would be really interesting to watch Robert battle with the idea of this little baby being his worst enemy’s son but also the last piece of his beloved Lyanna left in the world. You can bet he would raise little Jon to hate Targs more than anything - which may cause a bit of an identity crisis should Jon learn of his parentage later in life.
Problem is, I can’t think of a feasible way for Robert to actually learn Lyanna is in the Tower of Joy. Ned had to actively search for them once the rebellion was over and we have no idea what leads he had or the time he needed. Robert would have access to far less. The only solution I’ve thought of as of yet is having Howland Reed be part of Robert’s little group and do le greendreams stuff, but a) that’s more Jojen’s thing and b) I find it unlikely that, if Howland was at the Trident, he would be anywhere other than right next to Ned.
Some other divergences include:

The story takes place in a cyberpunk fantasy setting following a nameless magic barely an adult who uses an obsolete railgun using his magical energy as a substitute for a charge. Pretty much Shadowrun without the dragons. The thing is, even with magic, no one has any dreams or hopes for anything. He starts out innocent, living in a shack with a cat, and not really caring about anything. But trying to live a normal life is what ruins him.

Most of humanity is kept in urban bubbles because the natural world is filled with unexplainable magic phenomena. Only strange, almost alien, primitive people still live there. Most Gods are dreaming for eternity or dead. Ancient mages still live, but they're the worst person to gain the attention of because their thoughts are so different from modern people everything they doesn't seem to make sense. Terrorist organizations are trying to destroy certain locations for no peculiar reason. And aliens have visited but fucked right off when they realized magic was real.

As he does worse and worse jobs to keep himself busy or learn more about the world, he gets the attention of some investigators. One recognizes him somehow and his partners tease him about how similar they look. They'd have some close calls catching him before the end where they finally sit down to talk and the protagonist is rich from everything he's done.

Turns out, he's his dad. Kid's mom is a dreaming goddess who raped his dad in his sleep. And the protagonist tells him he knew the entire time. He just didn't care because he has no real human attachments. Nothing about the world and how people act makes sense to him. No one, not even the gods, have any reason to live or do anything anymore. That realization and the death of his cat months before the meeting makes him want to destroy everything.

I imagine the marriage alliances from canon are annulled or something it's way to obvious that they were the issue for them to be allowed. For the North this means Ned is forced to find another wife (either someone in the North or someone that's a hard ally to the Targs, this could get him Asharra Dayne as a wife i'm sure he wouldn't mind that but..... well it's just gonna make things in the North more troublesome)
In the Vale Jon is going to have to name an heir since he's got no kids and no wife to make one
On the other hand Ned not going to the tower of Joy means that he's not losing some of his top bannerman just to find his sister so..... things might be better long term than canon.
The Riverlands probably get fucked the hardest since they are the youngest of the Major noble houses and thus the easiest to replace, the Stormlands might get to keep Stannis as their lord since he just turtled up in the main castle.

No, I wasn't just asking to vent my frustrations. I really wanna know if people have had projects with simple aims that spiral out into something they're really proud of but didn't actually intend to create in the first place.
If I ever manage to finish "IRK: A TALE OF TWO PLANETS" it'll be the best thing I've ever written.

I don't know if it counts, but I had Both Gerts survive the events of Last Gert standing because Skottie Young killing adult Gert is something that almost everyone thinks was dumb at best, and I am the first one to admit I am a mediocre writer at best since almost all I write copies stuff from outside I Hate Fairyland in a "Wouldn't it be cool if Gert did this?" context. Yeah, I feel that. What started as a silly idea for a crossover has turned into a novel’s worth of pages upon pages of notes dedicated to scenes and dialogue and character arcs for not only the original story but all the sequels I have planned for it as well. This started ten years ago and I only have the first three chapters written and I keep going back to change them periodically because they’re not perfect.

I've been working on the outline for a while. A running concern is that for all of my longfic xovers, instead of a 50:50 split for featured characters/settings, it's almost always 30:70? So I am struggling to work more DC in.

The Jason Blood/Camelot plotline is quite relevant in the middle chunk, though. looking forward to getting it on the page

Biggest things i've gotten was a piece of fanart for one of my stories (wasn't the best but I still appreciate it a ton) and a fan continuation of another of my stories that I unfortunately couldn't really enjoy as it was a cross over with Steinsgate which I know nothing of

It’s been a while since I just sat down and wrote fanfiction. I still remember the golden days of writing 15K words of kink stuff and getting put into the recommended folder, although everyone from that group has flaked on me over time.

Yeah, makes sense how Ned would come to that conclusion. Might also have contributed to Ashara’s suicide in canon if she was responsible for her brother’s death by doxxing him, lol.

Wow, that’s a really interesting point I hadn’t thought about. STAB alliance would probably be too dangerous for Rhaegar to allow it to continue. Big implications for Robb, who would now be Robb Rivers. That would definitely cause deep resentment, constantly looking at trueborn sons and thinking “the North would have been mine if not for Rhaegar”. Or would he end up legitimised as Robb Tully, outside of the line of succession? I can imagine Rhaegar might grant them that to try and smooth things over with Ned a little, seeing as the whole Lyanna thing was, from Rhaegar’s point of view, a huge misunderstanding that lead to catastrophe.
Not Ned, though. I don’t think any amount of appeasement would make him forgive the guy who kidnapped and raped(?) his sister. If Howland did end up with Robert’s group at the ToJ, he would probably head back to the North via the Narrow Sea and tell Ned that he has a half-Targaryen nephew. I like the idea of Rhaegar being unaware of Jon’s existence, you see.
There’s also a case to be made for the Ned/Cat marriage remaining because of Robb, but the Tullys being replaced as Lords Paramount to temper their power, made even easier by Hoster’s death. Maybe House Mooton become LPs due to their Targ loyalty and prominence. Though, if Rhaegar went so far as to revoke paramountcy, I’m not sure Tully would be the one he’d pick when Arryn is borderline extinct and Baratheon is the chief instigator.

Might be a good way to make Ned calm down, especially if Ashara can convince him of some stuff. I headcanon the Lyanna/Rhaegar thing as a romance at first, but when she learns of the rebellion Rhaegar has to keep her locked away against her will.

I’m honestly not sure whether Hoster or Jon should be the one to die. I only started thinking about this a few days ago, but I definitely want one of the rebel LPs dead on the Trident so that Rhaegar can install his own regency for either Harrold Hardyng or Edmure. Arryn’s marriage would be easiest to annul, though, on account of Lysa’s pregnancy issues.

This is another place where the regency plot comes in, depending on whether Stannis survives the siege. If Stannis dies, command falls to young Renly, who would probably open the gates and surrender to the Tyrells. This leaves Rhaegar free to install Jon Connington as Renly’s regent to pacify the Stormlands.
