Issue 9, Gwen vs. Vincent Von DoombotPrevious >>153345048
Next time, the Poole Boys.
>>153360922I'll never understand why Gurihiru didn't do covers for the entire series. This cover sucks,
>>153361191thanks op
>>153360952The sheer audacity and villainous pageantry of DOOM is something I will never tire of>>153360960Actual tie-in to Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. I shouldn't expect much from her future self I guess but man, I know Gurihiru can draw Doreen much cuter than this>>153361001>"Why was I programmed to feel fear?"It's silly but the opening pages do actually make me sympathetic for this poor clanker.>>153361031It's especially funny in contrast that Vincent desires 'normalcy' when his origin is so extraordinary, and again I like how it's opposed to Gwen who had a very normal life in a very normal Earth before seeking weirder pastures.>>153361048>Gwen on her phoneDamn zoomers can't stay off them for a minute...Vincent also makes for a challenging protagonist in terms of power. Doom-Bots are made to be perfect Doom decoys, a step down from the real thing is still more dangerous than anything else Gwen's come across.>>153361073>This plan was not thought-out...You think? Also I get why she'd think the Champions in general might have her back, but what in the hell made her think making MILES her contact was a good idea after their last encounter? I feel like Kamala would have been a much safer bet.>>153361099Wow Tony, way to be a team player. Maybe it's the desperation but at least Batroc keeps the faith>>153361128Not going to get an insta-win out of Cecil this time, Gwen.>>153361139Classic case of the villain becoming what he hates most amidst his spiral. Also I like how Gwen just selects a random officer to be more important to her by virtue of getting to share her name. Officer Grey's cute, even if she doesn't get to do much over Unbelievable.>>153361156The stolen police cruiser returns, Gwen's getting her worth out of it
>>153362437Stop doing this.
>>153361179>What if we call the cops?>But then *I* get in trouble!I love how Gwen can just such a fuckin child at times. She's looking pretty down here but I quite like she's taking more responsibility. Her book, her problem, but also her mess to clean up, and as Cecil points out it's good of her to be worried about the others.>>153361191Kek, the realization Gwen/Cecil have learning MODOK does in fact have henchmen they've not been using all this time is great. Gives me a Venture Bros vibe just imagining all these guys sitting around bored in full uniform while the important characters do stuff and now they're finally about to earn their paycheck. Thanks for storytime OP. Vincent's origin story is fun and does well to set up why he loves the mundane so much when his early years were so chaotic, weird and uncomfortable. I just think he makes such a perfect foil for Gwen as a villain, having such ridiculous origins and yet all he wants is a boring but peaceful existence, which is something Gwen had and abandoned out of disdain for the banal and seeking the exact sort of excitement that is Vinnie's former life. He makes an excellent threat as well, a Doom Bot is well above Gwen's comfort zone with an edge in technology, magic, and intelligence over both her and her allies. I find it somewhat ironic if not for the very NYPD Gwen initially sought to disrupt, he probably would have gotten her here too. I enjoy Gwen realizing her plan was woefully under-cooked and her shifting more to wanting to save her friends rather than just proving to herself her role as the hero. Ending on the henchmen reveal is both a funny and hopeful note for next time.
>>153361073The more I think about Gwen's backup plan the more I laughShe didn't even call Miles' cell, she called his home phone. I'm guessing because he wasn't willing to exchange information she used the phonebook but that she didn't think it weird she'd have to ask Miles' mom to talk to him is funny.
>>153360922It's not often I see a cover that's worse than the interior art.
>>153361179If there wasn't a crisis going on right now, what would Gwen realistically do once she realized she had henchmen at her disposal?
>>153364195Oh I think you know...
>>153364336Oh yeah...8 v 8 LAN Party
>>153361128>>153361139sex with Officer Gray
>>153361063>>153361084The Vincent fight has some great action pages
>>153364195Something really asinine like making them all play pieces on a giant chess board against Cecil (she gets bored after the first ten moves) or a giant human pyramid
>>153364567I like Gray. She's barely there in Unbelievable but her design is nice and an annoyed cop putting up with Gwen is a solid idea.Maybe Hastings would have had more ideas for her if the series were allowed to continue.
>>153366316To stay relevant she becomes the new Americop in order to rehab the name or something and becomes US Agent's partner/sidekick.
>>153361179>tfw
now KISS
>>153367595Sorry, Whitley decided she's asexual just like him in spite of how horny she actually was.
Bump.
>>153361191I think we're coming up to the point in which I tapped out.
>>153371442Why's that?
Issue 10, it's ogre
MODOK the organization is dead and next time Gwen deals with more dead things. And fill-in art.
>>153374241>>153374008We are ALL Poole Boys here
>>153374095>>153374124Cecil is Gwen's professional tard-wranglerBut she sure is an adorable tard
>>153374339Oh yeah, this was during the period where Doom was moonlighting as Iron Man.Always fun to see old, short lived status quos overlap like that.
>>153375974Also funny here considering his Doom-Bot is being televised as a 'hero', which is what he's currently trying for.I like the downfall for Vincent, it's kind of karmic that all he wanted was a quiet life where no one thought he was anything more than normal, and through his acts now has tons of exposure he didn't want
>>153374186Gwen kinda straddling that moral threshold here. I know she's just bluffing to get Vinnie to act, she may really believe they're just 'background characters' but the incident with Miles left enough of an impression that she isn't ready to off a nameless elderly couple. But still, that's pretty dark of her.
>>153376223It's not even so much his acts as much as it is Gwen basically drove him to madness with her self-absorbed idiocy and inability treat were she lives as if it's still a real place. Which now has come to bite her in the ass since she lost the organization and her friends.
>>153376605>Gwen basically drove him to madness with her self-absorbed idiocy and inability treat were she lives as if it's still a real placeKek, this too. I'm trying to think of a good example but it's like when a calm/reasonable guy is driven off the deep end because of the sheer slippery smooth-brain of another person. And that smoothbrain is Gwen.
>>153374355Batroc's a great mentor to Gwen. He has surprising faith in her when no one else does, and his speech hits her harder than if it came from anyone else. I like how he acknowledges she did well, she improved, and things turned out alright, but sometimes you can do all that and things still don't work out. Especially from a villain it's appropriate but it's also a good, harsh lesson of life she needs to learn.>>153374372Considering how borderline dependent Gwen's been on Cecil since he died, even him leaving her here while everything she's built up falls around her is especially rough, this poor girl.I really like Ronnie sticking by her though, she feels like she's been Gwen's strongest silent supporter since she got here. She had no stakes in MODOK and still stepped in to help her with the Poole Boys, and when she's at her lowest she tries to cheer her up reminding her she did well and offering her work.
>>153374372Thanks for the storytime OPI enjoy this arc, it's probably the best one in Unbelievable before Beyond the 4th Wall. It's a growing period for Gwen; she still has her flaws to work through like her impulsiveness, not thinking things through, being self-centered and less concern for others than she should, but she makes progress. She comes up with plans (even if they're not great), gets more invested in saving her friends for personal reasons, and she even thinks to help protect civilians in this last battle which I think is a particularly big change from how she used to act. Which does make it all the more pitiable for her when she does better only for things to still fall apart, but as Batroc explains that's just how life works, and it's still just the consequences of her own antics she has only herself to blame for. Still sad to see everyone leave her though just as she was getting attached. The action itself was great, I like the messy three-way dynamic between Gwen, the Teuthidans and Vinnie as alliances switch. I love seeing Gwen getting high on power between piloting the mech and unleashing her custom army, even when things are serious she can't help have the time of her life here. It's a satisfying end to the MODOK era.
>>153374372>the little tears in her eyes as she desperately tries asking Cecil if he wants her along for a road tripFuck
>>153377147Well it also hits harder considering she feels like a worthless burden on her family in the real world which is why she was fine with them forgetting her. And despite doing everything right and getting her dream of living in fantasy comic book land she STILL can't escape the feeling of being a useless fuck up who feels like everyone else sees her as a loser and burden.
>>153377625It's a tragic sort of irony that she abandoned the real world to run away from her problems, thinking she could just leave everything behind and start fresh, but because she as a person never changed she just ended up making more problems for herself.
>>153377421She's lost her emotional support ghost
>>153374372>And fill-in art.Even though she did the right thing, she still must suffer.
>>153374372question OP, since this is the ending of an arc would you also be planning to storytime a couple of the Unbelievable spinoffs?Gwenpool Holiday Mix-Up / her Venomverse issue? They're both written by Hastings too but wasn't sure if this was meant for just the main Unbelievable
>>153378273I'm debating it. The Holiday one isn't fully Hastings and neither is really important to anything. The Venomverse issue is at least fun and works as a counter to Whitley's asexual bullshit though.
>>153374241>>153374339>Did their job perfectly, even adhering to Gwen's new dress code>Took the fall while the main characters got awayI feel bad for the Poole Boys here. But I guess such is the life of a henchman.
>>153379175They likely know that it comes with the territory.
>>153379175To Gwen's credit, at least she plans to break them all out of jail after they get caught until Batroc shoots the idea down. That's a good boss.
batroc's design in this comic is so good.
>>153381580It's a shame that it didn't become his main design. I think they went back to the normal one.
>>153374033>>153374049Nice little details in showing the neighborhood evacuating / Gwen talking to Officer Gray on the phone at the very beginning before they reveal at the end
