Good morning, grandpa. Have you been enjoying the May flowers from a nice, safe distance? That pollen can be deadly. Don't worry, the newspaper comics have been depollinated.

>>153720758That's today's comic. Not "that far back".Since they had the twins McEldowney seems to "plan" no more than 20 minutes ahead.Forward and backwards time skips are just an excuse for depicting additional examples of "2nd base".I wish he'd wrap up "Pibgorn" though. Doesn't make him any money, so I understand his disinterest in doing so.

>>153716229Though here's an old one with the parents. They appeared a few times, maybe one once or twice. This is all from the webcomic era though, and so this isn't canon to the current series.Man, the art has changed a lot. SuprDee has really improved imo. Maricela just looks like a short teenager here.
>>153721082picrel>>153721112did the same
>>153721719I should have been suspect that any man could have produced such plentiful puns as Frank and Earnest requires. But I agree, a bit of a disappointment.I actually like the new art better though, so at least there is that.
>>153721719That is depressing. I also read an article there recently that talked about the state of newspaper comics.https://www.dailycartoonist.com/index.php/2026/05/12/the-zombie-comic-strip-apocalypse/>It is one thing that we comic strip fans are aware of the situation, but when newspaper editors, who are on the whole no more knowledgeable than the general newspaper reading public about comic strips, are taking notice it is a warning sign to the short form sequential art. Last week The Gloucester Daily Times used it at an excuse to do away with their daily comics page: “Another reason for discontinuing the comics is that many creators are simply recycling old strips.”>The trend among syndicated newspaper cartoonists seems to be retiring but continuing to keep their space on the comics pages by rerunning previous episodes of their comic strips. And the syndicates themselves are embracing the rerun movement rather than signing new comic strips to replace the old ones when they end, desperate to hold on to that newspaper space. (The last new comic strip from the Big 4 syndicates was Rosebuds in September of 2024.)With Zits, Baby Blues, Big Nate, and several other comics ending and going into reruns, is there any hope for new newspaper comics?
>>153722327I think the only real hope is from some shift in editorial. Maybe NYT, which I think has traditionally not had comics at all, starts pushing comics. The problem obviously being that Newspapers themselves are largely moribund.
>>153715810Kek.
>>153722327I don't think there's any way to stop the slow demise, short of newspapers themselves stumbling across a new business model. Either that or the syndicates find a new model on their own and publish outside of the papers. If anything I'm surprised they are still hanging on in the 2020s considering that people have been talking about the decline of the funny pages for decades.
>>153716065I'm so sorry for the way this video is titled https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw_ujzXgMUg
>>153722327>(The last new comic strip from the Big 4 syndicates was Rosebuds in September of 2024.)Wow, SuprDee really lucked out then. Was able to break into the business before the actual downfall of newspaper comics.
>>153722327A lot of newspapers are run by terrible people now, people who only cut and not because of failure or papers going down. They aren't going to care about comic pages. The websites are hard to monetize. If Gocomics went all full pay, for example, they'd lose a lot of readers , and if they went full free they'd lose money, especially because of their assult of ads, many use ad block or Brave browser. It's also getting harder to get new readers since millennial parents aren't getting papers and their kids aren't seeing comic strips the same way they might have. That's also why alot of creators went graphic novel. Big Nate is probably reducing to just Sundays (and no Reruns) because the graphic novels, and Phoebe did that. If you are a new comic maker, might as well just in those and skip the stress of trying to make it to papers.
>>153722327Reminder that Peanuts is to blame for this trend
>>153715219>>153716921>>153715219That's well and good but worms make the soil that plants grow in and it's the plants that photosynthesize
>>153724094Try reading the actual comic.
>>153714986- 2 and 4- Earthworms spend most of their time underground, so how would they ever get any sunlight? If he isn't lying, he's a murderer.- That's a really... Interesting geisha/worrm.- A penguin. Not much of a riddle there.- Vulture's tongue, skull's eyes, the mountain in the back, third bone behind the hill, rabbit's whiskers, snake's tongue. Took way too long to spot that last one.
>>153722327hear me out: vertical funnies
>>153722327>>153724413Honestly, the model of what newspaper comics are have just changed into being twitter and instagram webcomics or something posted to webtoon or tapas. There really is no difference between them anymore. The reason why webcomics exist in the first place was to be independent from the newspaper syndicates.
>>153715360That bottom middle panel though.
