Honestly, the way I feel about this ending is similar to how I feel about Death Note's. The actual conclusion is fine and there are some good scenes in there, it's just that the most of what's shown in the ending is fucking stupid and written poorly. You can make a good ending to Digital Circus where Jax abstracts, but Goose failed.

You're right that I'm basically envisioning an extra episode exploring all the characters' emotional states and Jax's off-screen abstraction would definitely work better as a cliffhanger for the end of said hypothetical episode. That being said, it was definitely way more effective when they did the whole "sudden death" thing with Queenie and Caine. Also, the issue with having all the characters feeling all good and peachy by fixing everything and then having Jax abstract is that coming off of the episode where they said they'd help him creates a weird disconnect, Jax's life is about to get better, the Circus will be fixed, he can continue to distract himself and not completely wallow in his misery because he has friends. By having everyone at their lowest point, trying to deal with their own shit, there's not enough mental capacity for everyone to adequately help each other, including Jax. He'd be able to easily isolate himself, seeing everyone lose their minds, him introspecting and projecting that onto Ribbit. In the darkness of a hopeless world, he realizes how badly he fucked up as a person, this is where it got him, and starts to abstract. I think a moment of Pomni trying to convince him that they are starting to figure out how to fix everything and to give him and everyone a better future, but he rejects it because he believes he's too far gone would've been really impactful. With the Circus already fixed and Jax already abstracted, I feel like all stakes are gone and it just feels weird once everything is said and done. Now, as for Jax's psychopathy, I do think his cruel actions are integral to his self-loathing, but the way it's presented makes him look way too unsympathetic. He goes from having a decent moment with Ribbit to being a complete unwarranted schizo (cont).

The idea being that Jax is one straw from breaking the camel's back at any point, rather than the camel's back already being broken from the get-go. I also think his internal struggles would be much easier to show while he's in the process of abstracting rather than already having been abstracted. It showing you exactly what's getting him there, rather than everything feeling kind of resigned because he's already gone. That's why the impact of the hug is completely missed. Jax doesn't deserve sympathy and he already abstracted anyway, so who cares. Personally, I think that it only would've worked if he somehow unabstracted after that, but that wasn't Goose's plan.

I was thinking of writing a fanfiction about episode 6. Specifically Pomni grabbing Jax's ears hard enough during their fight to pull his weird rabbit skin suit through the mouth hole. Exposing his featured yellow skull, and then working from there. Is this a fairly original idea? When it comes to writing fanfiction I like to satisfy a niche (and to subdue my dissapointment in the source material). I'm not sure if this has been explored and I think it'd be fun to describe the way jax's countenance shifts.

Jax would be getting worse and either he denies the option and abstracts in there causing a climactic ticking clock or he finally accepts being vulnerable and truly connecting with everyone. Everyone soul bonds in his core (with or without Jax) and we have the ultimate moment of human connection that saves the day. From there the restored Caine works with the circus members to rebuild the circus and they go happily ever after (either with a Jax funeral where Caine is actually able to say something meaningful about him like a real boy or Jax lives).It’s not really the same exact thing but the same pieces with different levels of focus, I definitely pegged Caine for the primary test of the theme of the story and Jax as the secondary, but Goose had it the other way around. I called mind merging instrumentality stuff but it was just Pomni and Jax and Caine solved his own issues in a b-plot. The ending ending was the same but keeping Jax as a pet didn’t occur to me I just saw the abstracted hole as continuing to persist.
