It was genre defining, but definitely not lightning in a bottle. More like the only fish in the pond. It's also not the kind of genre defining that holds up by today's standards. As for capturing that feeling in a modern era, I actually gave that some thought the other day and concluded the only way to do that would be something "similar" to Shrink High, but in VR. I mean you won't convince the SH cultists, but you could impress the SH fans. But the problem is by today's standards, you have to do like 50x the work to be as impressive as Shrink High was back in the day. The benefit of RPG maker is it requires very little in the way of programming, and more in the way of art. A modern game is going to need just as much, if not more, art/animations/etc, and also waaay more programming. It was supremely cool walking around SH's game world the first time, because there wasn't anything else like it. The game appeared larger than it actually was and first playthroughs back then were great. But then after you finished the game you realized a lot of that world your perceived was imagined and not actually implemented. There's simply not a lot to do. Still, I'd love to see an evolution of SH that actually made it more pleasant game design decisions. I believe the core of a good size game (outside of size moments obviously) is exploring the world and discovering the various interactions. So you should implement designs that compliment this idea. Give me different routes through an area. Let me be clever and discover hidden routes. Give me a few companions, even if their personalities are archetypes. All I care about for a plot is whether or not it's a fun story. Doesn't have to be (and probably shouldn't be) serious, just make it fun.
