I have unlimited sand where I live. I want to make it into Silicon for fun, and maybe if I’m retarded enough I will become a silicon mogul and oust Taiwan. What do I do if I want to purify silica from sand and turn silica in to silicon?I imagine I could use a panning method with water and a rotating pan maybe? Then add crushed charcoal and put it in a furnace to make CO2 and Si?
not bad OP
Anyone?
>>2790750Be patient dumbass. Some moron will reply to your pathetic bait eventually.
>>2790557the neat thing about silicon is its affinity for water, all you have to do is take your sand and heat it up to molten glass, then toss a bucket of water on it. The silicon will bond with the hydrogen and make silicon hydroxide pellets, and the impurities will be left as crusty slag in the melting vessel. Then you crush up the silicon hydroxide pellets, lay the powder in a smooth layer on a cookie sheet and bake at about 350 to get the water back out and you're left with a smooth wafer of silicon.
>>2790557sand isn't really just silica...first u must remove all the junk transitional and alkaline earth metals and all the sulfate and phosphate etc ions, now the degree of removal is what determines what u could use it for...with the higher impurities concentrations (MGS) it is typically used as a additive for steel and Al alloys, with way far less impurities u could make polycrystalline silicon and with far less impurities still monocrystalline silicon...for overthrowing Taiwan, u would need impossibly pure silicon, especially considering ur diy capabilities which would be prohibitively expensive and way too complex for u to accomplish, that is not to say u could achieve any useful quantity of poly-Si, since that is very difficult too, even higher purities of MSG is quite involved for someone who might not realize the pitfalls of the purification process
>>2790557for purification u could try simple arc furnaces with pure coke (not the drug), even thou i highly doubt it will work in any useful capacity
>>2790557You can do it with magnesium powder and sandhttps://www.popsci.com/diy/article/2005-10/making-silicon-sand/
>>2791033Would pepsi also work?
>>2791033I only have RC Cola.
>>2790557make yourself a gigantic pair of fake titties. implant them yourself as well. don't forget to post pics.
>>2791033>pure coke (not the drug)i think he needs pure coke (the actual drug) to get this to work.
>>2791383XD actually u might have a point
>>2790557Most of the world class silicon used in semiconductor manufacturer is derived from quartz mines in very few locations not sand
>>2791733And for the next generation of silicon you're going to need to be able to produce 99.999999% pure
>>2790557You can't beat Taiwan. There is a special quartz cave in North Carolina that you don't have access to
>>27905571. purification of sand/dirt into SiO2 https://youtu.be/y-fdunvzC_g2. SiO2 into elemental Si https://youtu.be/TCM-9XWu9gk3. ???4. fuck ton of processors coming our of your garage. chinks roping
>>2790557I hope you like spending a hojillion dollars on natural gas, because it takes between 170,000 and 341,000 BTUs to refine a kg of quartz into a kg of semiconductor grade silicon.
>>2793447blech, fucked up the math, 50-100kWh per kg.
>>2790557>silicon mogul and oust TaiwanYou really need to read up on the value chain here, it is huge and long but money os not where you think it is.It starts by mining quartz sand, most is from Norway. That sand is sold in huge bags, and is shipped to Switzerland or Japan, where they melt, refine and grow monocrystalline boules, which then are zone refined and turned into wafers. Each wafer is 200 mm in diameter - and sells for a few dollars. Value comes when these are shipped to places like Taiwan and these are patterned and turned into chips. Then the wafers are sliced and packaged (often Indonesia) and shipped to customers.Lower grade silicon is melted for use with amorphous photovoltaic cells, but that doesn't make you rich either.
