What do ya'll guys use for log splitting?

An axe. But these things are good for kids so they don’t hurt themselves while they’re helping you or playing around

Serves us right, innit lads?
This can take care of the toughest logs we deposit, although the pansies in Sussex use something else altogether.

Love hydraulic splitters. Terrified of hydraulic splitters. Can't stop thinking about "1/2 second of inattentiveness and it will take my arm clean off without giving a single fuck".
>>
>>2863177
I've never used a hydraulic splitter, but I've seen them in use. They seem to operate incredibly slowly (with incredible force) but how does something moving very slowly taking your arm clean off?
>>
>>2863180
Arm was a bit of hyperbole, but fingers? If you're getting tired and you forget to not hold the log from the end, they can be gone long before you register the pain.
>>
>>2863186
>If you're getting tired and you forget to not hold the log from the end

That is an informed adult choice to be stupid. If you resent self-control your head belongs in the splitter.

the pain closed loop feedback control pid tuning is far more sensitive than you think. my 72 yr old pops puts 5 cord a year through that splitter without incident. zoomers should touch more grass
logs that resist splitting then go with a pop and shoot out the wedge end are the biggest danger. you learn quickly where not to stand
fluid resists compression but a 60lb round of oak makes a pretty good spring to store energy when its between an unstoppable 40t ram force meeting an immovable object at the wedge

If its bucked into rounds with a chainsaw I use an axe.
If its bucked with an axe, has pointy ends, I use an axe and stakes.
Currently have gone on this axe geometry autism so the more wood I cut the more often I get to try out different combinations.
But if it was more serious id likely use a tire + maul or a machine splitter. Just really like how axes feel.
>>
>>2863177
If you used one for 10 minutes you'd not be so afraid. The danger is less about the machine and more about dodging logs that go flying.

Light Axe or hatchet to open it then chisel and sledge hammer to split it, a metal chisel gets it done and swinging a blunt hammer is way safer than an axe or maul.

Why not use actual splitting wedges? They do work bretty gud in twisted stuff that will just bounce an axe or maul off. Have mostly cottonwood around here and it is very fiberous and hard to split if it has any moisture to it at all. Also if its a twisted gnarly piece then it is a huge pain in the ass. Straight grain perfectly dry stuff chunks off nicely though.

I use a 30 ton (if i remember correctly) northstar hydraulic splitter from northern tool. I need to finish building a homemade splitter that I will mount to the front of my dump trailer so I can pull up to a tree pile with and split and throw directly into the box. This will save me from having to bring my current splitter and unload it at the pile and then come back and get it after I'm all done.

8 lb maul and two wedges. I have beaten chunks of metal off the top of the worn wedges and have not needed more making firewood from downed trees out back the last 30 years. Large knots and twisted stuff does suck a bit. I'm over 60. Goddamn kids get outta my yard.

The intent of wedge design is to tolerate grinding off spalling instead of letting it accumulate. It doesn't happen often but hunks can and do fly off under impact with considerable force
>>
>>2863128
I have some old car rims and lawn mower blades. You think I could make one of those and have it be decent?

I'm 42 years old. Can't recall every splitting any wood. You guys are in the dark ages of technology.

I dun fucked up. My split wood pile isn't that impressive right now, but I have a lot of trees downed and ready to chop up when needed.
>>
>>2865994
I don't have an angle grinder or wheel or any of that. I wait until there is a good flattish chunk ready to be knocked off, then when balls deep in a trunk section, I whack the loose chunk of metal or grab with vice grips like a man. For metal removal or sharpening I have several large bastard files I have had 30+ years. Not enough to take material off a wedge. My wood pile is currently very similar to 'post wood pile faggot' above but would be instantly identifiable beside my shed so no gif. It has been several times larger way back.
>>
>>2866042
Same. I buy precut logs from the store.
