so I tried to remove the exhaust from my Yamaha, & both studs broke off, & I already tried drilling them out, got one stud out but the other is a real pain. My drill bits keep snapping, today i bought a cobalt bit for $13 and now I'm afraid of breaking it too.

Do you have a center punch? That’s the first step so you start drilling in the proper spot. Then go at it with drill bits, you can start with a smaller bit and work your way up. Remember that drilling metal isn’t the same as punching a dull bit through wood, it’s low speed/ med-high pressure with some lubrication to keep it cool. Let that drill bit get too hot and your job gets harder,

Then once you have a nice hole drilled out down the center, grab your favorite extractor, hammer that bitch in, apply heat around there if you want, twist and pray because a broken extractor sucks.

I’m a fan of these 10pc sets with left handed drll bits and extractors. It’s worked well enough for me in some shitty situations. This is a cheap one so I might try the Irwin Hanson one with left handed cobalt bits eventually. The left handed bits can help sometimes, if you drill out 2/3 of the inside of the stud or bokt, there’s a chance it lets go partially and you don’t have to go HAM with the extractor.

If you ever need to do something like this again, step one should be to smack the bolt head with a hammer a few times sharply. Then if its still stuck heat the aluminum with a small propane torch. Also sometimes you can tighten the bolt some and you will hear it crack and break loose, then proceed to loosen. Also apply penetrating oil liberally (not while heating with torch, but directly afterwards.) The heating and cooling cycling will help wick lubricant up in the thread and break the bond the aluminum has on the steel bolt threads.

Also i believe you can dissolve steel bolts out of aluminum using alum. Look that up as i have never done it myself, but know others have.

That’s good, try to get it centered on the busted stud so when you send the drill bit into it, you can try to keep the drill bit down the middle of the stud and not totally wreck the threads
