I do a lot of my cooking on some small wire racks in my air fryer these days, and I'm wondering if there's a better way to clean them. Standard scourers are a bit of a pain to get in-between the rack, I bought some fake scrub daddy shit which works well, but they fall apart fairly fast, only last a month or so. The racks are made of stainless steel, and I've heard that shit like steel wool will eventually cause rusting. Brass scouring pads might be a good choice, does anyone use that shit?

It is. Tubers go in from the wheel well and just hook a prybar on the spring and pry it down, which didn't get me enough clearance on the belt, or they use a hose clamp to do the same thing. I don't want to put my faith in a hose clamp so I'm just filing the tool down.

pretty obvious answer:
if it's open-air, slide a thin piece of paper between plates to see where it catches
(weighing paper is very thin)

if it's enclosed in a plastic box, you'll probably destroy it trying to open it, so leave it alone
one goofy idea is to run a high current pulse through the short, by discharging a big cap
this will blow away any material that's shorting, and/or create a layer of isolating carbon

I'm constructing a portable subwoofer for a small mobile sound system, that I already have.
Thr inner volume of my enclosure is 17l and it is meant for open air use.
I have it all simulated with a round port and the last thing to decide on is the port shape.

I have a 3D printer, so I can make any port shape I want. But I don't know which is best. Apparently exponential curvature has benefits over a straight pipe. I just don't know how to size it properly in relation to a straight pipe from the simulation.
Hexiblob made a video about this but he is just listing different port shapes and not telling when to use which and how to lay it out properly.

I need to power a big 200w LED panel for a few hours one night. We won't have access to electricity and it's not practical to lug a generator with us. Your alternator should be able to handle that no problem. My concern is that inverter and the plug that goes into the lighter outlet. I would recommend going with a little bit better inverter with clamps that goes straight to the battery, there’s a good chance you could be blowing fuses trying to run 200W off that lighter plug.

How much pressure can i apply to a cable?
According to the package, this spat in the baseboard is supposed to hold a cable, but it’s a very tight spot. And it’s just some rather old piece of cable I had laying around, most modern extension cords I have are much thicker, so I do t know if I can even buy a few meters long of “thin” 220V cable nowadays.

That's literally how all home wiring is done in first world countries. As long as you're not bending around extreme radiuses it works fine, a few 90 degree corners is no problem. Solid core can be much thinner and is much safer than multicore in applications where it isn't subjected to constant movement.

I was closing my oven when the door came off - no idea how, but no scary noises. I'd think it was my fault, but I have taken the door off in the intended way quite a few times before and this doesn't look or feel familiar, plus IIRC you can't close the door all the way with the locking levers open and I was using it at the time with no problem.

Now I think the hinge is in the position it's in when the door and lever are closed, even though that should have prevented the door from coming off. I can't move the hinges by hand at all, but if I shimmy the hinges back into the slots I can use leverage to open the hinges partway, but they slip and snap shut violently. Even if I could get the door back on and open (the position where the locking lever can usually be moved), I'm not sure I'd want to adjust the lever that's a fraction of an inch from these finger-eating springs.

a) clearly I'm dumb, so is there any way this could be a completely different issue from what I'm thinking?
b) what do?
c) since the manual claims the door can't be detached with the levers closed, can I even assume it'll be possible to attach it in that position?
d) even if I can get the hinges to the open position (with the door on or off the oven), how would I get the locking levers to the open position without cutting my fingers off?
e) would it be a bad idea to disassemble the door to try to put the hinges in the right position? I can only find one video of the door disassembly and it's for a model with different hinges (or at least different locking levers). I'd imagine it probably isn't a good idea to start loosening screws with the springs storing energy, and they might be if the door is off the oven even though it isn't supposed to be

if they are real (good) stainless caustic soda wont harm them at all

the reason steel wool causes rusting is because you basically smear non stainless steel onto the stainless which starts rusting and then kick starts rusting the rest of it, other times if it's really bad stainless (or 'i cant believe its not stainless', like 17-7 or 17-4 grade steel) then it will get surface rust regardless

Do Brits really plaster over drywall (what you call plasterboard)? Why? Just to keep plasterers in business? Drywall is already flat. The whole point of introducing it was to make laborious plastering unnecessary. You can just skim and sand the joints and the wall is perfectly ready to paint.

I understand that it makes sense to plaster bricks and blocks and you people have more of that even on interior walls, but watching UK tradies on YouTube I see them plastering drywall on stud walls which is an insane waste of effort IMO.

Does wood paneling crack as easily as drywall or show movement-related cracks? I recently bought my first house, and the previous owners did a so-so job with the drywall, leaving cracks—some hairline, some up to 1/2" wide. I’ve repaired the foundation and joists, patched the drywall cracks, but they keep coming back.

I'm considering installing wood paneling in some or all rooms anyways. I have a few dozen sheets and I think it's comfy. Would paneling help minimize visible cracks, or is it likely to fail in some way too?

Looks like a pretty standard basic sink to me.

As for why it might be a bad idea: you said it's for a small cloakroom, which will necessitate it being a small sink. I've often found that unless I'm careful when washing my hands in small sinks there will be a small amount of water getting splashed down the front of the sink. Not usually a problem but could become one if that's also where your hand towel is stored. A bit of repeated splashing in a small poorly ventilated room is going to result in towels that smell of mildew.

Anon, the electrical system of the cars use many amperes (usually), that's why when you use the battery and clamp something into, there is a huge current going into the circuit, you alternator should do just fine, but if your car has a lot of electronics be careful the constant current could degradate the components a bit faster than in normal use, or blowing the fuses.
Perhaps it's less hassle to use a portable flood light (picrel is 50W but guessing they are more out there)?
You can charge before use, and since they are portable they could just work as well as your panel.

please help me determine the best way to remove the cover from this commercial mixer so I can repack the whole thing with fresh grease. I tried threading a couple screws halfway into the cover plate and pulling it up with some pliers, but it will not budge at all. Based on the exploded view, it looks like I may be able to punch upwards on the central shaft from below, in order to loosen the top cover. I don't really want to hammer on this thing though. What should I try next?

I actually just got it off, but thank you for the suggestion! For anyone seeing this in the archive, here's my solution - There were two unoccupied bolt holes next to the bolt holes for the transmission cover. I had to thread a screw into these holes, which then pushed against the casting beneath the cover, pushing the cover upwards. The guide pins were super stuck but I massaged it a little as I applied continuous screw pressure, and it finally popped off

I've got a barn attic to insulate. I'm trying to do this as cheaply as possible since this isn't exactly a top tier build here. I was looking at loose fill insulation, but had a really stupid ass idea, I'll admit, but it might work. I've got access to a big ass source of styrofoam. As in, this place throws away large dumpsters full. Is it worth taking this, shredding it, and using it as loose fill insulation, or is the value of this just utterly garbo/not worth it. This is for a Zone 2 climate, so not exactly ice cold most of the year.

If you use the fuel as a working fluid but aren't actually burning it in a combustion chamber of some kind, there's no theoretical difference from just using an entirely separate burner. In practice, you're going to have problems with multiple things, not the least of which is that the amount of fuel you need to burn to heat up the compressed fuel and the amount of compressed fuel you need to spin the turbine are going to be wildly different. You'd have to waste loads of fuel either in a a deliberately inefficient heat exchanger or just outright dump it instead of burning it. Consider that (as a ballpark example) a 1l engine, at fill tilt, might be pushing multiple thousands of liters a minute of gas through its exhaust, yet only be consuming hundreds of grams of fuel in the same period.

Depending on what you're using as fuel, you may also have problems with it decomposing at elevated temperatures and lubrication, IDK.

im thinking about making a ladder. a 20ft tall ladder from 2x4 or 6s. 2, 10ft pieces joined with a scarf joint and then I would place a section on both sides, a smaller length to fit between rungs spaced 10 inches apart. the rungs will be supported with a section under each end. it will be for going and placing a squirrel box on a tree. seem reasonable? I weigh a bit over 220 and im tying to save some money. A fiberglass ladder for my weight is around $200

I went to turn off my outside spigot for the season and after turning off the valve in the basement I go outside to drain what's left in that portion of the line from the spigot and nothing is coming out. I assume there's a bow in line somewhere (it's shitty pex). Rather than try to rip out the entire line is there something I can attach to a standard spigot head to siphon any remaining water?

Newbie here, I bought a 150w rotary tool today. After coming home I plugged it in, turned it on and noticed a few things that may or may not be normal

This is correct. Brushes are sort of universalized, so they just manufacture them square and rely on the motor itself to dig the perfect snug contour in during the break in period.

There is such a thing as sparking TOO much though. If they're shooting out the sides like it's 4th of July you may have other issues. Normally you should just be able to peek through the vents and see the sparks within.

If you're still hesitant, think of it this way: Each of those plates on the commutator, by nature, is going to contact the brush and then stop contacting the brush once it has passed. Every time this happens, you have a miniature arc that occurs no differently than when you pull the plug on any A.C. outlet, you always get that little spark over the air every time something stops contacting.

Just right now I unscrewed the brush caps to look at them. I think this drawing describes better what I saw. One of the brushes appears to be wearing out evenly, in a curved pattern on both "entrance" and "exit" angles, while the other side is wearing unevenly, I can only see the sparks on one side of the tool by the way so it's probably that side giving me problems. Come to think of it this design is simple but prone to uneven pressure, I reseated the brushes and caps hoping that helps, they weren't screwed all the way down.

You're right, but that "sparking TOO much" or "just normal" is what I'm unsure about, this being my first tool. I know and expect a few sparks, but something is probably not right here. It's not a flash bright enough that can be seen from any angle, but something a bit dimmer that you have to look for but is definitely there (and it sure has that "burning wire" smell, the same smell a AC plug makes when it arcs) and the "arcing" sound. I'm not a genius, but I'm pretty sure any constant arcing on any conductor will progressively damage it's conducting ability much like a 'carbonized' AC plug.

My family just went to sleep so I cannot do further testing right now, fug.

i've come across something called an ultrasonic leak detector and have spent way too long looking for a decent one on ebay/amazon/alibaba/etc. but i have no clue which ones are good and also lots of them are way too expensive

This is what mine looked right after turning it on for the first time, even after letting it run unloaded for 30 minutes max speed. I reseated the brushes, this time not screwing all the way down and the sparks are almost gone. Some guys in that short are saying that's normal but I don't think it is.

Only problem left is I feel it heats up near the spindle lock, by the looks of it either that's normal because it's pulling hot air from the back to the front vents, or the bearing is bad.

Very, but it also stopped doing that after readjusting the brush-screws, I left them pretty loose. I wonder if what happened was that the springs and the screw were putting TOO much pressure down on the commutator (because sparking went down as speed increased, so the excess pressure wouldn't affect the same), being new and all. It's just weird I guess, the first advice and common sense would be to tighten things down. Oh well, I hope it works hassle free from now on.

Half the houses power died. Washing machine outlet, and all lights and outlets past it.

Replaced one breaker and nothing. (Probably a wrong one because the labeling is bad). Replaced the outlet and at first nothing. Replaced a GFCI breaker that was stuck in tripped state. Power returns.....but only for the washing machine outlet I replaced. Everything else is still dead.

Do you have a main breaker outside? Or the main switch on top of your panel? Or one bus bar died. Residential is 240V coming in, which is 120 + 120, so if half of the house is dead, maybe it’s a whole 120 leg somewhere between the utility pole and your fuse panel.

If shit has been browning out for awhile and you don’t own a multimeter to start testing some stuff, I wouldn’t recommend doing much besides flipping the breakers off and back on. Make sure you check for a small panel/disconnect outside where the utilities come into the house, it will be somewhere by the electric meter.

Search for "AC Circuit Breaker Finder" or whatever you call the device that interrupts power when a fault is detected.
In the US, we plug the transmitter into the live outlet and use the receiver to locate the breaker that powers that outlet.
Depending on the construction of the building and the device you purchase, it may be possible to follow the wiring back to the breaker.

I got this cheap Harbor Freight Cen-Tech circuit tracer. I wish I would’ve read the reviews more because I wanted to be able to trace behind walls and it doesn’t work great. I think the issue is some of these tone generator circuit tracers are supposed to be accurate to a point where you can pick one specific wire out in a panel or bunch of wires, so you can only tone it when you get within an inch or two or the wire and it doesn’t work behind walls.

Any protips on what I should buy to cut primarily mild structural steel <100mm? I made a rocket stove as babby's first project using just an angle grinder but not keen to do anything bigger or more precise the hard way.

You don’t have to go that expensive. Picrel will work on electical circuits but you gotta make sure you cut the power to it first. Circuit breaker finder works with the power on, and the other tone generators work with no power to trace it to a break. The issue is whether or not it will pick up the tone through your walls and such, which is the issue I have with my cheap HF version

i'm trying to clean this monitor case but this white stuff (came from a gypsum plant so likely gypsum) won't go away. it disappears when it gets wet but slowly comes back. i've tried using vinegar and rubbing alcohol and have been scrubbing with a scouring pad. any ideas on how to get it clean?
