Unit is not fully re-assembeled yet. we did not get in from the shop until 21:00 Sunday. we started at 10:00 on saturday. there were several interruptions, appointments & breaks taken.

got the gear case off the motor frame, fully disassembled & thoroughly cleaned on Sat. the 50 year old "Benalene Grease" had turned to a mostly solid tar. picrel shows inside exactly as i saw it. i have not removed or "dumped" any lubricant from the housing in the photo. i scraped, scrubbed and acetone cleaned every gear and shaft...deeply. the solvent waste produced a fly-paper-like sticky film.

sunday: use fresh gasoline for a 2nd clean on all parts, chains, etc... reassemble gears, chains & transmission(s). lay housing back on its side, put mounting bolts in all holes (even though not frame mounted yet) to make fully assembled, housing into an oil pan, of sorts. pour oil into "pan" over gears, chains, etc. quickly put other half of case on, sliding down seals & bearings over the multiple vertical shafts, careful not to bind, sliding down to clamshell seat on gasket with a bit of red RTV. seat all perimeter bolts to seal oil inside. set vertical, to check for leaks a few days.

to get spacers, thrust bearings, chains and washers all in correctly, we ended up fully assembling the gear/chain set no less than 4 times. the schematic was less than clear on a few virtually identical parts & it ALL has to go in FULLY ASSEMBLED, simultaneously to mesh.

the Benalene Grease was insanely expensive. we also could not see any benefit to heavy grease being used. we switched to 85w-140 gear oil.

will put back in frame this week, or next weekend. we still have to do a bit of engine tune-up. we did get it started and running a few months ago, but it did not start the next day.

background: my dad bought this new. it has sat for 30 years. he plowed, planted & raised many gardens with it and instilled a lifelong desire to affect my own food.

when complete, this will be a ground-breaking improvement in our soil management abilities at home.

Was there any reason to take it apart other than to clean out all the schmoo?

Also if you have problems with the 90wt leaking out look into cornhead grease.

yes.

when moving the input shaft while working on motor and input shaft, the input gear slipped and fell into the abyss that is the case. turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because if I had run the machine with that dry, sticky gear case, it would have burned up and shelled out the gears in minutes. there was absolutely nothing resembling Grease or lubricant inside.

pristine, unscathed gears, chains & shafts when cleaned.
