Use plenty of water and soap with a toothbrush. You can use something small to get in the holes like a paperclip.

Clean face, concerned about the interest of critters with your outlet, might be a heat source. Metal dissipates heat better than plastic, alternatively you can seal the outside of the box with great stuff they make a flame retarding version.
