should I build a desk or buy one?
situation: I am traveling to a remote jobsite and staying in employee housing. the houses are set up for miners so just bed nightstand dresser, that's it. I want to bring my workstation, so I will need a desk to put it on.
hard mode: I already left and didnt think about bringing any tools.

I have two options:
buy a desk for $50 from walmart
build a desk for $50 from wood from the wood store
I have: + and -, adjustable wrench, hammer.
>>
Tell your employer you need a desk to do your work and let them figure it out
>>
This is diy, but refinishing/repairing a desk is an option. Talk to the janitor at the local school, might have a destroyed desk he doesn't want to fix, probably going to pocket whatever you give him so be discreet. The janitor might have seen a label from the shipper so you can buy one from the manufacturer. School desks are stable, a refined design with thousands of satisfied users and instant recognition by visitors.

It's for personal use, but I end up working after hours anyway. They said to just use the kitchen table.

I guess something like this make four 30in legs, and a standard rectangular frame, nail the legs to the frame, put the first osb onto the frame and screw it down to the frame and tops of legs, add glue and put the second osb sheet on, add glue and put the plywood sheet on. then turn it over and add a bunch of heavy stuff to the bottom of it.
I would have to buy a saw though

If you don't mind spending a little more and have an Ikea nearby, I like these tables, very basic but also lightweight, easy to move, quick screwdriver assembly, and just as easy to disassemble when you need to move again:

https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/adils-leg-black-70217973/

>$30 for tabletop (47 1/4 x 23 5/8 inches)
>$30 for 4 legs (27 inches tall)

Close enough for a Walmart.

So how permanent is the result gonna be? If you don't even gonna keep it for yourself i'd just go with the ready to go version. No matter their shitty materials.

Try asking over on /g/.
>>

there is one sort of, I'm flying into a major city and driving 4 hours, so I can go to one there. It's just an annoying option.

do those legs simply unscrew by hand? it looks like it is assembled with a top nut that isnt secured idk.
otherwise, the spänd legs seem better to me

>>2870839
75% chance it's gone in a few months
>>
>>2870857
Wouldn't really think about it then.
>>

>do those legs simply unscrew by hand?
Yes, after you install the leg plates on the table top, the legs come on & off my hand. You can watch a full assembly in a quick vid here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QqOrez78hE

(Not me in the vid.) These are not heavy duty tables, but someone in our house has used one as a PC desk for over a decade across multiple relocations and it's still holding up.
>>
>>2870871
ic, that works then. I did not also realize the legs are steel.
if I need additional bracing, I can just diy lower connections on the short sides.
>>
>>2870885
Yeah. I mean, I know suggesting the "buy" option is not in the spirit of /diy/, but sometimes you just want to focus on other things... like playing League of Legends, watching videos, and shitposting on our "workstations".
>>
>>2870894
well I was always leaning towards the buy option, but the one I was going to get from a walmart was much smaller, so I was leaning towards building one put of the 24x48 material from the wood store. but this is also 24x48 and I can assemble it in like 15 minutes vs 30 hours(included glue dry time).

Some guys make desks out of old doors, nice if you can get one for cheap/free.

(Anybody got that old screenshot of the "house made out of doors"?)

Maybe a camp table would work for you.

as someone who owns a 55" lagkapten in white, i don't recommend you follow this anon's advice. this tabletop on the inside is made of cardboard arranged in a honeycomb pattern, it's like 90% empty space. there is a video on youtube of someone cutting it in half to show this.

in practical terms what this means is i leaned my elbow on it and there is now a dent in the table. from leaning on it, with my elbow. i'm not a heavy person, and i don't abuse my stuff.

I'm a 40kg girl, I don't think I'll have that issue
>>
>>2871071
Shrinkflation maybe? We have ones that are 20 years old and still going strong, just a little finish has rubbed away in some friction areas around the edges.

Sweet anon... as the one who suggested it, I hope it works out for you (and forgive me in advance if it doesn't). FYI those tables can definitely be resold on Craigslist when you're done, or maybe sell it to another guy in the next incoming wave of workers when you leave (if I understand the situation). Good luck with your job, and post a pic of your new /battlestation/ if you're not afraid of getting doxxed.

It works, I posted it at >>>/g/bst/ :)
I'll try to keep it as long as possible desu but idk

Thanks, found it.. Fukken Ikea man, they can really come in clutch. (We have so much Swedish stuff in this house...) Since you didn't exactly define "remote" and I'm not gonna ask, all I'll say is, I hope you have serviceable internet for streaming kino. Cheers.

>tabletop on the inside is made of cardboard arranged in a honeycomb pattern

exactly. but as long as you arent standing on it or putting 400 pounds of equipment on it, any modern monitor, keyboard or computer will be more than suitable for these tops.
>>
>>2872475
Nta but Ikea definitely has desks that you can stand on, commercial grade shit, but you have to pay for it. Similarly, you can buy an Ikea area rug for $50 or an Ikea persian rug for $500; they run the gamut. On the more expensive end, I think their cabinetry department has been doing well for quite a few years now.
>>
>>2872475
Unless you have a solid oak/metal door that's what your doors all look like too.
>>
>>2872519

but thats not a door, its a desktop. a door doesnt hold computer hardware so those are fine to be made of shitty materials especially if you dont care about sound getting thru.
>>
>>2872513
>Nta but Ikea definitely has desks that you can stand on

yes those are solid wood. these are not and are designed for normal lightweight everyday use not commercial applications.

this one? how is it? i want to get something but not spend >$80
although i would prefer something with more structural rigidity
>>
>>2871164
That is uncalled for and projection
>>
>>2872593
its fine, it naturally wobbles a bit since its just legs into a weak top, but it feels fine.
If you are a heavyset person and lean your elbows into the desk all day long, putting alot fo upper body weight into the desk, probably get something else though.
also if you eat at your desk, you will need a mat because I already stained it a bit with some rice somehow.
>>
>>2870894
disgusting fuck

>can't even take a nap at the desk
how do trust shit like this to carry thousands of dollars worth of computer equipment
