I'm potentially going to buy a home that has cedar wood siding.Does anyone know how much it would cost to maintain cedar siding if: 1- DIY2- alternatively paying for a professional to do it for me?We are talking about a 2000 sq ft house.I might pass on it if the maintenance is too expensive or difficult. depends what you mean by maintain.If you want to keep it looking new it's like maintaining a deck - regular application of a protective sealer, which isn't too difficult to DIY.If you are okay with the cedar turning grey then black, maintenance isn't really required. It will degrade structurally and shakes will eventually split and chip - that's when it's time to replace the siding.How quickly it degrades depends entirely on your climate. It's the penetration of water + frequent freeze/thaw cycling which destroys wood the fastest.
