Just have free time on my hands and want to start using an SDR. Would it be illegal to bring one to the airport? Like place myself somewhere in starbucks unpack it and just listen in?
(pic related is what I purchased)

listening is okay fa.m

it wouldn't hurt anything, but if the stewardesses se you they will tell you to put it away, because they won't know what it is, and don't want an explication.

sitting in the terminal, depends on how many karens are about.

there is no reason to be in the airport to use one, within a mile is more than close enough.

Illegal, probably not. But if anyone spots it you’ll likely get a visit from the constabulary, get yourself booted from the airport, and get the equipment confiscated for ‘investigation’.

A WebSDR is a Software-Defined Radio receiver connected to the internet, allowing many listeners to listen and tune it simultaneously.

Tune the world thru your internet connected web browser.

Many such SDR websites listed here:

Picrel is the NA5B webSDR server located in Virginia. Give it a tune:

Use your own SDR hardware and antenna,
OpenWebRX software and a cheap Raspberry Pi computer server to make your own remote setup rather than lugging gear thru airport security.

You should probably use something more conspicuous like picrel so people will leave you alone.
Plus, it’s more directional and has higher gain.

Okay but honestly. How do you use this shit?
I have watched all the tutorials, I have installed SDRSharp, HDRSDR + multiple other SDR software. I have installed DSD+, unitrunker and can still only get FM Radio.
What a fucking stupid hobby, not only is the software faulty and who have to install all these fixes, but you only receive carrier signals. Here in Switzerland where I live everything is encrypted. I cant even find Amateur, CB or short wave.
Is this only an American hobby where nothing seems regulated and everything is still cowboyesque?

to be more specific, these are the amateur bands for Switzerland

absolute skill issue

How is it a skill issue? There is nothing to find

It’s always niggas both skimming instructions on using the software and skipping antenna theory in its entirety. Compounded by the expectation that all bands and frequencies to be buzzing with comms 24/7. Start with nation or statewide networks for emergency services like pager frequencies, P25 networks or Airwave. If you can’t even pull those signals just put the SDR in the recycle bin. Not even talking about decoding yet
