Would it be better to build this compressor with a servo or stepper motor?

I constantly hear about these things getting smoked, and I imagine its from the heat and duty cycle. Would a slower high torque motor last way longer? Would take longer to produce the air but would be much quieter and wouldn't smoke the air cooled motor or piston.
