How do I build one from scratch?
I was thinking of a cast iron or concrete underground base inside of two tuffsheds

I really would like to have one in my basement and have come up with various schemes to make it work but everyone says it would be a disaster.

They are just jealous
Do it
>>
Just build a shanty around this and plap in a wood burning stoove
Could probably weld one yourself and grout it

Without heavy investment in waterproofing, ventillation and filtration it will end in moldy tears

I keep (wishfully) thinking that if I have a cover that hermetically seals the pool when I'm not using it, that would be enough to keep all the bad things from happening. I'd want it for exercise, so no more than an hour per day on average. You're probably correct about the problems but my brain just wants my fantasy to be true without all the hassles reality brings along.

its easier and cheaper to get a cheap above ground pool, then build a shed over it. you could do green-house style and cover it with poly so it passively heats/maintains temperature. thats what some of the olympic swimmers did during covid so they could keep training (only for the olympics to be cancled lmao)

the moment you fail to maintain it propperly it will become a disaster. you have to be able to vent the cholrine off gassing as well as control for humidity so you dont rot the floor above you and at the same time you are also trying to heat the space which increases the growth of mold and invites various humidity loving insects

if you want an underground basement pool because you are shy or dont like the idea of someone seeing you swim, just build a privacy screen around your outdoor pool.

Honestly a gym membership, I pay $20/month for unlimited long hot showers, access to and space to use a cycling machine, treadmills, lap pool, free weights and cable machines

I had an above ground pool as a kid, and it cost more than $20/month to keep it maintained between the chlorine , Evap water, filters, tester kits etc

Nothing about privacy. It's mostly that in the upper Midwest, an outdoor pool isn't viable much of the year. A shed isn't going to improve things much. While the basement isn't kept as warm as the rest of the house, it's far warmer than the outside or even an unheated shed. Any heat going into the basement pool that radiates out when end up in the house. With a shed, even well insulated, the heating costs would be enormous.
Other than in a few mansions where the owners have tons of money to spare, I haven't seen a basement pool in a house so I agree that it's probably a bad idea.

Do you mean the ones that move water around so you can swim against it, or literally just a pool?

If the latter, you can go above or below ground and build a greenhouse above it. If below ground put something that insulates and drains well like pumice around the outside. If above ground you could do the same or do as the Victorians did and heat your greenhouse with compost (be sure to screen the compost area from the swim area, and vent the compost air elsewhere).

If you go the greenhouse route, then use transparent corrugated panels over a wood frame, then put glass or more plastic panels on the inside of the frame. This protects against hail fairly well. You could also put that square-ish version of chicken wire (forgot what it's called) about an inch over the corrugated panels to add a bit more protection.

Fermentation produces a bit of heat, and if you do anything that requires heat like drying food, smoking, grilling, hot tubbing, etc, you could do so nearby to harvest that heat.

Build a berm or plant wind blocking shrugs on the side of the pool that gets the winter wind. You could also color the floor of the pool dark or black, and color the tiles/concrete around the pool the same to absorb more heat. It will likely be very hot in the summer, so put some of the corrugated panels on hinges so you can lever them up in the summer.

If you can vent the rotting plant matter smells and keep the bugs screened out, then those compost bins on wheels which let you roll their contents could work, in combination with the other things (south facing greenhouse, north and winter wind facing berm, heat absorbing colors for flooring). This was how they grew orchids and oranges in British winter during the 1800s.

My neighbors have one in their basement. It’s the kind that created a current so you can swim.

This all seems like a terrible thing to try to diy.

> that if I have a cover that hermetically seals the pool when I'm not using it
It works, the French use those a lot, made from corrugated polycarbonate. You still need to ventilate for then it’s open, but not much more than a shower room of the same size. Don’t try to waterproof anything yourself, buy a complete tub. Basically dig big hole, put foundation, install tub, pour foaming concrete, then add tiles or something so that all water drains back into the pool.

If you’re going to make a stationary lap pool might as well add an underwater treadmill like mcgregor used to use

plap?
