note in second pic, lower left hand corner, those three devices are called “sierra blasters”
you drill 10mm holes, 24-36” deep, insert 10mm chargesand youpush the blasting cap on the end. There is a slit in the stainless rod to contain the wire.

The rock was 30’ long and 5+ feet deep.

I almost gave up. It took me 1 day with a friends backhoe to get to the point in above pic. It took me two months to break that rock up.

I believe the rick is called “diorite” its light brown/tan on the surface but the fresh broke edges are blue and white. Its one of the highest rensile strength rocks. Its favored for its high abrasion resistance and tensile strength for construction applications.

Everyone said i couldnt do it “your homeowners insurance wont allow it” blah blah blah “pool has to be 10’deep to have a diving board” blah blah blah

I did it anyway, county inspector didnt care as it wasnt installed at final and i camoflaged the bolts.

well guess what my pool is 9.5’ deep and just under 40” long and 22 feet wide in shallow end however due to rock taking so long I just ran outta time (excavtion took me all of july and august) this is almost an abomination thread because the deep end is only about 16’ wide (it was supposed to be 18…) so it kinda looks funny

gunite subcontractor: “nobody makes pools this deep anymore”
I do! in solid fucking rock

i didnt take alot of pics of plumbing, steel, gunite stages, wish i did.

my costs:
I bought the Sierra Blaster system for 1400, then i had to keep irdering bits and charges as HUNDREDS of shots were required to break up that rock. So total cost of DIY blasting (SB has ATF license waiver so FEL not required) ended up being 3 grand I got maybe 3 holes per bit. bits ranged fro 5 bucks to 21 bucks each depending on length. I used hundreds…

Anyway, excavation cost me like 11 grand,4 grand to backhoe guy, 3 grand in blasting equip, 3 milwaukee hammer drills smoked, rented a large excavator with a hammer for 2 grand that was a waste as it wouldnt even scratch this rock.and trailer rental to haul off spoils (30+ 5 yard trailer loads)

Initial rough form board (bender board to make the rough outline of the pool) was 4 grand
Plumbing and steel was 8700
Gunite went way over yardage because blasting rock doesnt always give you clean vertical side walls. 11,000
Plaster with pebble for finish was 9100
deck was 11 a square foot,, I wanted to just patch back into the existing patio, but waifu wanted colored stamped concrete so that cost a fucking bundle 2200 sq feet at 11 bucks a foot…
Anyway, all in i got a 40x20is pool, with 2200 sq feet of patio and top line salt filter for 76 grand. We budgeted and saved 56 grand…had to credit card and dip into retirement savings to finish

Anyway, I still think i came out aheadas the going rate for a gunite pool in CA of this size would be every bit of 125 grand.
I got a bid for a 26’ x16’ shitty fiberglass 1 piece pool, (the fiberglass pools cant be made deeper than 6’!!) for 76 grand with a 5k a day rock clause…
IMO there is NO REASON to hire a “pool contractor “ All they do is hire the same subs you can hire yerself

Nice work OP! Chlorine, Bromine or Salt?
>>
Great job homie, bet you felt like a fuckin king.

Give me your thoughts on the Bauer jackhammer. Also 3 Milwaukee drills smoked? Gonzo? Ive been looking at something similar but not if they die like that.

planned on Salt but basically ran outta money and went with an inline 3" Chlorine tablet feeder thing. I may convert to salt next year.

That bauer has done OK for the money. It rattled out several screws and nuts that hold it together-its almost done and doesnt hit very hard anymore. The bit holder has to be wired up or the bits fall out. I would get new the higher end one if I planned on heavy use.

The first milwaukee was my trusted 20+ year old Hawk hammer drill (steel case, Made in USA) It was used for many hundreds of holes in concrete for anchor bolts and hold downs when I was a construction bro. It did a couple hundred more in the pool before puking grease out the seals and seizing up. They simply do not make them like they used to. Bought milwaukee #5268-21 279.00
It died withing 200 holes (this is heavy abuse mind you on this type rock), I actually returned it, got a free replacement from HD and pretty much smoked that one too. By rights I shoulda got the bigger (450$+ model for this application but I HAD to use 10 mm bits for the charges and there are NO SDS max 10mm long bits only 3/8" by 8 " long)
