What’s the story on these big ~1000w, ~3000rpm corded handheld drills? Who uses them for what? I thought speeds that fast were only for really small bits in soft metal, where you’d be using a drill press or mag drill or something.

Or conversely, why do cordless drills usually top out at ~2000rpm?
>>

That's a hammer drill, I'd guess the 3000rpm is the motor RPM, not the chuck RPM. Chuck RPM is probably like 500 or so on a hammer drill of that size.
On the cordless drills, 2000 is plenty, and that's the chuck rpm. The motor can run a lot higher, it's geared down.

Like a lot of these, it also has hammer mode but that’s chuck RPM.

https://www.hikoki-powertools.com/products/powertools/ac-drill/dv20vd/dv20vd.html

For another example, Metabos with and without hammer mode:

https://www.metabo.com/us/enus/tools/drilling-screwing-chiselling-stirring/hammer-drills/sbev-1000-2-600783620-impact-drill.html

https://www.metabo.com/us/enus/tools/drilling-screwing-chiselling-stirring/drills/bev-1300-2-600574420-drill.html

The no-hammer version is actually rated at a higher power than the hammer version!
>>
>>2888741
In those cases, it's probably because they cheap out on the gearbox and they don't give a fuck.
>>
>>2888746
>cheap out
>$200 Hikoki, Metabo, Makita, etc corded drills
>>
>>2888749
Smart people don't buy AC corded drills that aren't at least explicitly hammer drills, this is not market for the thinking person. The Makita 1000W corded hammer drill is geared to 600RPM though.
>>
>>2888751
I have a hard time believing these aren’t made by these less-consumer-oriented-than-typical companies at these high price points for some specialized purposes. Hilti has a slightly less powerful (780w) UD 30/UH 700 that from the specs is exactly the same drill +/- hammer function with a $10 difference. Some kind of industrial customer is buying those in numbers and wants their $10.
>>
>>2888751
Oh and I’m sure Makita has a 600rpm one but this is 2900:

You use it to drill a hole in concrete and piss off your neighbours

I can't think of anything where I want my combi hand drill to do 3000RPM at less torque rather than 1500-ish RPM at more torque. Niche shit like sanding, wirewheel or polishing with specific bits, or drilling plastic/aluminium can profit from it, but nobody's buying a generic combi hammer drill just for those purposes. If you have such small polishing bits, you want a dremel or a larger rotary tool, if you have small drill bits for tiny holes, you want a lightweight 12V drill. This is genuinely a boomer product for boomers that buy the same shit they've always used because it's the same shit they've always used. The drills have a simpler and cheaper to make single-stage gearbox.

Consider that these drills aren't actually any higher performance than a good cordless drill, and barely cost less, why the fuck would anyone buy them instead of the cordless? The only time you don't want cordless in a hand drill is when it's used high-power for long durations, ie. drilling masonry, and these aren't specialized masonry drills, just combi drills with a hammer function.
>>
>>2888761
This is exactly what I’m wondering. I don’t think random boomers are buying enough in 2025 to support continued production of multiple models of this type across industrially oriented companies. It’s not like Ryobi has anything like this.
>>
>>2888732
oh look another "I have no ability to think, and cannot comprehend that tools have uses not apparent to me" thread.
>>
It was cheaper than a cordless hammer drill so I bought one t. apartmentfag. Speed control is absolute ass and this poorfag model has no clutch either, and drilling into concrete makes my lights flicker

I'm with you there. Most drills and drill presses spin way too fucking fast... I don't get it.

I want slower and more torque from my drills.
>>
>>2888980
>I want slower and more torque from my drills.
I want the same from my grinders. so what it can spin at 12k RPMs without load if it chokes when I actually cut something. ~8000 is plenty when the torque is there
>>
>>2888732
I swear 99% of people buying these, often for crazy prices for something so outdated, actually want a rotary hammer drill and haven't used them for anything a rotary hammer can't do much better even once.
>>
>>2889006
>actually want a rotary hammer drill and haven't used them for anything a rotary hammer can't do much better
What's the difference between a rotary hammer drill and a rotary hammer?
I have a Bosch bulldog with an SDS chuck and it's ten times faster going through concrete than my shitty little M18 "drill with a hammer setting" that has a normal keyless chuck. The little guy is only useful for going through stucco.
Maybe you're talking about something else though, but I'm not sure what.
>>
>>2889181
I meant that as the same thing and that they're much faster than regular drills with a hammer boomers always buy, then proceed to drill holes in the walls and absolutely nothing else
>>
>>2889185
Ok I see what you meant now thanks
