My father wasn't around when I was growing up.I thus have zero handy skills. Please tell me what i should have been taught.
Oil changes and brake jobs definitely. Sharpening a lawn mower blade, running a chainsaw, putting weedeater line on a weedeaterI'm just trying to think of stuff I have to do on the regular
>>2889493Learn basic electrical diagnosis, adding circuits to a house, fixing light switches changing light fixtures etc. Learn basic plumbing, especially how to turn water off and sweat valves because whenever they break it's at the worst opportune time. Or just continue to rent.
>>2889493Learn when to quit. Hopefully, while you’re ahead.I was struggling with school work, getting bad grades. My dad sad “don’t worry, the world needs ditch diggers too”
teach yourself bit by bit my nigga. Something breaks, fix it, something you dont like, improve it. There's no reason to not be able to self teach in today's age. Books and youtube existMy dad was around, framer/GC, hunted and camped. Guess what I learned growing up? Almost nothing besides digging holes and splitting wood. Too short tempered and impatient to teach anything, he let me rot in front of a computer playing roller coaster tycoon, or stare at a wall when for months when I was grounded for bad grades. Driving lessons meant going straight onto the road with no basics and getting a constant stream of screaming or sarcastic remarks. Taught me nothing about women and then joked I was gay. I ended up working with him for a few years after school, picked up some things, but I regularly consult books and tutorials for most things. Get familiar with power tools and physical discomfort and the rest will come.
>>2889535I agree with the teaching bit by bit method. Generally I suggest to get something cheap/free, break it down and put it back together.Great for cars since there's a lot of shit that could go wrong and plenty of resources to address the issues. Also learn everything you can about the tools you use, from general use to mundane 'I'll never use this feature' type stuff
>>2889535I'm sorry to hear that anon. I think your dad was probably way worse than mine, but I've experienced enough of that to be able to imagine what it's like. It's a shame that so many boomers are like that. I'd like to know how they got that way, so we can avoid turning out like them.
>>2889535Forgive me for blogging a bit but my experiences are the same.Though I did learn a bunch of things, it also came at a price. My dad always expected me to do everything right the first time, he was very unforgiving if you made a mistake and this made me very insecure and quickly to give up when I couldn't do or understand something the first time around, took me until 30 before I realised you actually learn by making mistakes, and I am happy to see how fun learning can be, even if it's a little late in life. Also on romance, my dad was lamenting in the pub about me being gay, it's the worst. When I asked for help with women he tried to hook me up with the local pub skanks and when I wanted to tell him I met a lovely woman he just told me "I don't want to know what you do in the sheets".Learn by doing is now my motto, internet is a wonderful resource, recently I have been working on making frames for my paintings, it's nothing special but worthwhile. Learning basic woodworking is not too hard on your, just do some simple projects and quickly you will see how learned skills can apply to other tasks around the house, it's incredibly satisfying to fix your own place up.
>>2889613I think there are so many cases of this because boomer men (maybe women too) are just deeply insecure, and also lived in such a consumerist time that their circuits are fried from dopamine and they need to do shit like this to boost their fragile egos and get their hits. It's important for us to recognize that boomers (and Gen X, just in a different flavor) are basically a pathetic and deeply childish generation, and we shouldn't look up to them very much. We should just forgive ourselves for having such sloppy upbringings and strive to do better, without worrying about their approval.

>>2889493Stealth women beating
>>2889493Basic engine maintenance (oil, spark plugs, how to replace an accessory belt), how to grout tile, how to cook for yourself, drywall repair, and one or two useful knots which will vary depending on where you live

>>2889608>>2889613I may have been a little drunk when I posted that, and I'm a little old to be bitching about my childhood. I have a good relationship with my dad, there are just some massive blind spots on what should be completely obvious parenting. It didnt fully hit me until my late 20's so there's still some resentment. All we can do is do better, if I ever have kids I already have a good idea of what to do and what not to do.
