this drill bit is meant to be spinning right? not for dragging?I will be etching slate coasters, hopefully it will work. The tip looks very smooth so I don't know how it was supposed to spin and remove material but it just looks smooth

How do you splice together 8awg wire for a car amp situation? I’m guessing a butt connector but I can’t find info on what type of crimper to use. I assumed a hydraulic crimper with a non insulated tinned copper butt would do the trick but the dies on those crimpers are usually hexagonal and I can’t find any images or video of anyone doing it this way.

>>2956280Crank it down hard and make sure the sleeve is 100% stuck
>>2956266>>2956268This is just a pointy diamond, they look like the ones used to dress grinding wheels. The tip will be off center somewhat, so spinning it will leave a wider trench than not spinning it.spinning it probably also will increase the wear, obviously.I wouldn't spin it.

I cleaned off some built in shelves for my board game collection and I'm not sure if I should do shelf paper, shelf liner or 3d print some mesh (limited to 9.5" squares) basically ~1mm thick infill sheets to act like mesh shelf liner. Dust is the main issue otherwise it's about perfect for storage and display.Thoughts?

I’m looking at buying pic related and using it to prop up the corner of a side desk next to my main desk (see where the red x is). It seems ideal since it won’t get in the way of my legs if I swivel around but it’s 2cm too short. Would raising it’s height with feet or placing additional wood between the desk and top of the leg be a good idea?
>>2956403You don't put shelf liner on solid wood. Wood gets character with use. Give it a good heavy coat of boiled linseed oil to preserve it and make it look cool. Maybe and extra coat and some sanding on the horizontals. Cover it with clear plastic sheeting if you really need to keep dust off. Found this by the road, pretty sure it's cast iron. Could there be anything toxic in it? Because the first thing my fat ass thought was "Man that would be the perfect size for a hamburger patty"
>>2956531The blue color makes me think its some kind of copper alloy. Like brass or bronze. Put a magnet on it. If it doesn't stick I wouldn't fuck with it. I have a 4500J Amazon Surge Protector that has my TV, PC, and PS5 connected to it. If I buy some speakers and a sub rated at 120W combined, would that be too much or should I buy another surge protector? I only have 2 slots left so the surge protector would be filled to the brim.

It should have a certain amount of heft to it and if you took a file to it and got under the rust layer it should be greyish in color. There shouldn't be any problem using it as a hamburger press aside from the lack of a handle on the top piece. Use a laser or sand blast it to remove the rust and then season the shit out of it like you would any other cast iron skillet or pan.

My unit has 3 big trees next to it on the outside. They’re overgrown. Main one is a palm tree.A.) can’t see the wall without going out of your way to look behind these trees this guy shouldn’t have seen itB.) from what I can tell the water isn’t hitting the wall directly, it’s running from where the trees touch the wall. This means>every time it rains water isn’t being put to the wall to run down it in a stream>any drops from my unit fall directly onto the palm fronds and other branches and run down. The wall has green streaks from this, the tannins or whatever staining. Above the fronds and branches there is zero paint damage no droplets running along the wall. It seems pretty obvious to me what’s going on but I’m unsure>paint dmgThere’s paint that’s been worn off. I haven’t been here long enough for that to occur. That had to happen from years of water running. No one will hear me out that the fucking trees just need to be trimmed. I’m being accused of breaking some shit I’ve touched all of 2 times. Now while I’m at work tomorrow landlord and a repair guy are going to be in my unit and that infuriates me.I could be wrong in what I’m assuming, please tell me if you think I am. Idk much about hvac.
>>2956781Yes condensation is a side effect of cooling. The unit below you probably heard dripping on their case. Yes it takes years to damage paint/ siding. It might take less for algae or something to grow and look like a stain. If window AC is allowed I don't see how they can fault you for having window AC, like everyone else. Don't take their bullshit they don't understand HVAC either.
>>2956821They aren’t faulting me for having window AC this hoa prick is a retard and doesn’t realizing the drops are normal. He’s claiming I damaged the wall and dripping is abnormal and my AC needs to be fixed. There is zero water in contact with the wall above these palm fronds. The drops are landing on the palm frond and falling along the palm frond back to the wall.Last time my landlord was in my unit I threw a bunch of shit away because she doesn’t understand how nasty some stuff is, she can’t even take her shoes off at the front door. She was using my silverware to scrape dirty piping and all kinds of shit and then just put it back with the clean stuff. I’m just really overwhelmed and annoyed I don’t want these people in my home I get this one place of peace and it has to be intruded upon. There’s also the possibility landlord leaves the repair guy here alone for a bit which holds obvious implications since idk wtf he is.It’s not even don’t take anyone’s bullshit I’ve just been forced into a corner. Even though idk a ton about HVAC I know I know more than these people combined. It’s so fuckin obvious, hoa Nazi just needs to have the damn trees trimmed.Watch dude, repair guy will clear a pipe or something claim he fixed it over charge the landlord, and then the issue will still happen anyways. I’m going to to have to bitch to his guy that the beaches are making too much noise scrapping against the wall to get this resolved

Since most of you guys are US and some euro figured I might ask some opinions. I’m remodeling a room, new interior walls, floor and ceiling. Now I need to move some outlets and was wondering is it really bad to put cable behind the wall? Code allows it but in my country most people say “always use conduit with wire in case you need to make a change later or drill into it”. But in the us they use romex and fasten it to the studs right? I can’t imagine I will ever want to move an outlet or lamp in this 8’x8’ room with one door. The layout is theres power coming in at ceiling level, one cable would go down to a light switch, one to the ceiling lamp in the center and from there straight down to two outlets on opposing walls. Just using doubly insulated cable would be so much easier but I’m not sure since so many people online say one shouldn’t
>>2957217>But in the us they use romex and fasten it to the studs right?Yes. When wiring around the room, holes are drilled in the studs and the romex is pulled through the holes. The outlet box (or switch box is nailed or screwed to the stud.Protection plates can be affixed at the hole to prevent nails and screws from piercing the romex.

I ended up modifying the spring I bought from a hardware store, and its been running perfectly smooth now.Now I am back to my original complaint, when the fuel gets about 1/2 full, the engine starts to die out, spins down, fuel starts flowing better, it spins back up again. I add more fuel, issue goes away and it runs fine for another hour+ until fuel gets around half again.as mentioned earlier, new fuel lines, new fuel cap, resealed draincock, new fuel filter, new clamps, fixed all leaks, etc.the damn thing just vibrates a lot. I had a lot of bolts fall off the damn thing, I ended up buying a box of split lock washers, and nylon nuts and redoing most bolts.the chipper flywheel spins smoothly with no major vibrationsthe leaf shredder spins smoothly with no major vibrationsI replaced the belts, and one bad pulley. all of the vibrations are from the engine.if I open the fuel cap when its half full while running, the fuel will bubble and spray out of the open cap, so its definitely the vibrations keeping the fuel from flowing smoothly. Is there anything that can be done to manage this?
>large kit wardrobe>the entire front frame was pre-assembled, heavy as fuck and had to be lifted onto the vertical wardrobe. Was probably inevitable I was going to fuck it up from the inevitable flexing. >>2957642The frame attached to a drawer base that's even heavier, getting that vertical would probably have resulted in even worst twisting. It was just a badly thought out design, should have built the frame onto the base, not have you lift a completed heavy but structurally delicate frame onto it.I'll get some wood filler tomorrow, see if I can get a smooth finish then get a few paint samplers to see how close I can get to the shade (it's brand new paint with no fading and with luck they use a common shade). If I can't get a shade that blends in enough I can probably get away with just painting over the corner posts in the new shade/

Now that it's getting cold, the furnace doesn't stay lit longer than a few minutes and then the blower sends lukewarm air through the house for a few more minutes. I want to put some stickers on the cover of my notebook that I used daily.Since I handle it a lot I'm worried about them coming off. Any idea what I can use to seal them properly? I have rgb 12v Christmas lights that only have 2 wires going down the string of lights how does each led “know” what colour/on or off/dim do be? Is it just Chinese magic? >>2958605the secret is that floors do sag, the amount of sag is simply negligible.all engineering isn't about eliminating things like deflection, bending, its about what is acceptable and what is not.you can model your floor as a simple floating surface supported at each end, you don't need the whole floor, the resistance to deflection offered by the rest of the floor past the support is negligible to a load between two supports.if you want a ball park, span tables go up to 1.25kN/m2 dead load. at 800lb it would need to have a footprint of 3m2 to spread enough load to meet the very very limit of joist deflection for whatever joist size and space your span table gives you.if you want to be extremely anal, the sagulator is a useful tool AND gives its sources at the bottom of the page so you can do the maths yourself if you wish.
>>2958334My home insurance covers stolen bicycles, so I just accept that I'm going to get my bike stolen once a year and think of it as saving on maintenance
>>2958616I think the main issue is I am trying to model load distribution over a 2 dimensional surface instead of a single beam (square feet, not linear feet) and literally all documentation only considers the latter. Not sure how anything gets built that way but ok.
>>2958334Live in an all white neighborhood. I've forgotten my chainsaw within spitting distance of the road overnight and it was right where I left it the next day.
>>2958627because your supports are 'one dimensional'maybe you understand that any force you can treat as a vector and split into orthagonal forces, the example classic is pulling a boat along a canal tow path, the force between you and the boat is some angle, you calculate the forward force on the boat by desconstructing the force vector along the rope to two euclidean style vectors.anyway the point is, if you think about how your floor is, if you deconstruct it to two orthangonal axes, in one direction, an axis which is perpendicular to the joists holding the floor up, the load is spread to the two joists.now consider the axis parallel to the joist. pick a spot on the floor boards and travel in either direction......nothing. there is nothing which supports the floor.all of the forces are distributed in the first axis, they are distributed to the joists.if your joists, if the supports were in two axes, you would consider the load distribution in two directions. but its not so you don't, you can simplify it to one dimension.but thats just the floor. then you have to consider the bend in the joists which should be perpendicular to the floor, exactly along the axis which a second ago there was no load on, but you should do that for each joist.did you ever do kinematics at school? taking moments about points? loads on a beam? its just like that, you maybe just didn't think about it before.if your safe is smaller than the joist spacing then you will need to check the sag of the floor then the sag of the joists.if the safe is wide enough to span more than one joist then you can ignore the floor, there is no moment acting on it really the weight is transferred to the joist. (assuming joists are spaced evenly you can't have an unbalanced safe on only two joists, a third would get in the way.) you should work out the force on each joist, then the sag for the worst joist.

hey anons, might not be a typical /diy/ question ,but there's no harm in askingbought an a/v amp, it's working well. also bought a sharp rp-1122 turntable, it's working, as in it turns and i can hear music VERY faintly when it's not connected to anything(sounds like an extremely weak internal speaker). i bought a preamp (dj pro 2) because the av set doesn't have a phono input. i also spliced a shitty din545 > rca cable which doesn't work very well, which i think is important. Now what happens is a few things:when i connect it like this, phono > preamp > avset, i everything is very loud, i can hear some music but mostly it's just overdrive noise. the preamp gain led is constantly red, as if the input was overdriven all the timewhen i connect it directly, i.e. phono > avset, it sounds quiet (but not as quiet as i thought it would), and the sound is very flat, especially in the bottom end (because there's no correction).i know the preamp works correctly, cause i saw it connected and playing and it sounded fineis the turntable outputting distorted sound somehow? how? is there a way to test it? there is no gain/volume/power setting or knob on the turntable anywhere. is it the needle's fault?

You watch TV socially in a family room (related to recreation and rumpus rooms, where the emphasis is on informal activities). You read in a lounge (related to dens, where the emphasis is on quiet activity, often alone). You talk with guests in a living room (related to parlors and drawing rooms, where the emphasis is on socializing with guests).
>>2959313You'll still need an anchor at each end. Pipe dug down and concreted into the ground or something along those lines. Yeah you could probably get it done with a harbor freight engine if you put a worm gearbox or multiple gear reductions onto it to gear it down enough to pull.

Anybody ever messed with these pulleys like on this motor? I think they’re adjustable, looks like it’s threaded and I might be able to close the gap so it’s closer to the top pulley.Air handler was screaming on startup. I shut it down and both belts were cracked despite looking fairly fresh. Problem is it’s an electrical room with some big VFDs that get toasty quite fast. Looks like I have to pull the motor to get the pulley off, and I need to do whatever adjustments quick before the room is an oven. I threw new belts on there but hate putting belts on a blower that are going to be chewed up in a few months.
>>2959636Centerline is lined up but you can see the belts aren’t parallel because of how wide that bottom pulley is set.
>>2959636One more pic to show the threads. But it probably has to come off the shaft since it looks like the keyway might lock everything in place once the gap is set.
some of the wood(?) is starting to show on the roof, is this something to be worried about? first floor of 2 story building, this is happening in the bedroom and living room
>>2959640that motor sheave is junk. its worn from slipping from running too loose and will never drive well again. the faces need to be straight angled to grip the belt sides
>>2959645Ok. But have you ever messed with those adjustable pulleys? One guy thinks I can close the gap on those things. Both belts were cracked.
>>2959641Looks like the seams weren't taped well enough to handle the structure's movement. Check for leaks above those spots, but if there aren't any, it should just be an aesthetic issue.
>>2959647Yes you can tighten them up. It's called a sheave as the other anon said. But as he also said that one looks to be toast and should probably be swapped out entirely. Is there a belt tension adjustment on the motor/fan so you can run a normal double pulley and get rid of the sheave completely? In some applications where you have a fixed motor and whatever it is driving the sheave is the only means to tighten a belt.
Where can I source real stained glass sheets? Not the thin crap from China but the thick old school stuff?
>>2959706Make them yourself. That's what the old schoolers did. Propane furnaces make it a lot easier now than in the old days.
I have a 2006 wood stove in my house, thin metal with air circulation vents and the big stones on the inside (got it for free with the house) it works well but takes very long to give off heat. I can get a heavy cast iron one from someone that’s probably almost 100 years old but very decently built, that can take about the same amount (maybe 20% less) of wood. I only run wood stove in the evenings (it’s additional heating) and wonder: would the cast iron stove give me more heat faster (in the first 2-3 hours)?
>>2959726>would the cast iron stove give me more heat fasterDepends on the design but probably not.The cast iron will absorb the heat longer while the thin one get's hot faster. The cast iron will stay warm longer AFTER it heats up. (more stored heat)
>>2959695The motor slides to tension it. It’s one of two things lately with an adjustable pulley that doesn’t really make sense unless it’s too difficult to source the proper pulley.I had an exhaust fan motor with the same issue. Fixed pulley on the fan shaft, adjustable pulley on the motor side, and it definitely isn’t adjusted right to run the same size belt as the fan pulley so it chews them up. Motor can be tensioned no problem, but that one is in a room where shit rusts so there was no adjusting that pulley. Took me awhile with the MAPP torch and penetrating oil to even get the set screws out of the pulley to align the two pulleys better.
Ive got a 12 foot roll of carpet I need to store for a long time. Can I hang it with rope off my trusses in a garage or will the rope make creases and ruin it? I know nothing about carpet. Thanks
>>2959775Stick a board or pipe through the center of the roll, then hang that from the trusses. Hanging it directly from a rope would put almost all the load on the tiny areas where the rope meets the edge of the carpet roll.

>>2957991replacing fireplaces is stupidly hard and everyone will tell you not to do it. I'd personally take out the dining/living and/or family/lounge walls (may need to put in an arch)
I've a enclosed porch. The paint is mostly coming off the wood below the roof, looks to be some sort of black tar-y or rubber based paint but fuck knows what it is. What paint does it need to be (want it to be thick, hardwearing and waterproof but don't want the wood to just rot underneath it). Also, the corner vertical piece of wood the siding is going into is disintegrating at the bottom. Is this a write off an needs a (I'm guessing expensive) replacement or can I put some filler or something and repaint it?
>>2959775All you need to know about carpet is that it is disgusting. Toss that shit.
>>2959796What is that? For tensioning? It’s not an issue with tension, it’s pulleys that don’t match so it’s impossible to get both of the belts straight so they survive for a long time.
Can someone point me at a product on amazon, walmart, or Lowes that I should buy? I got a ceiling fan and downrod, but the wires are about 2 feet too short for the downrod extension. What connectors can I get and what wire should I get? I'm comfortable replacing the fan itself, just struggling to find the wire and connectors. >inb4 solder themI'm not a great solderer and would rather have an easy solution I can have some confidence in. My understanding is there are vinyl butt connectors I can just crimp on and heat shrink for extra protection, hopefully Lowes has something like that. Its probably a total of 10-15 feet of wire so I'm not going to buy 5 or 6 spools of different colors, I'm fine connecting them 1 at a time with all the same color because the next person to see this won't be me. I just want it safe enough it won't burn down the house. Its not very big gauge wiring, but apparently automotive speaker wire (just what I've got in the garage) isn't the right shit for 120v because of the insulation. I'm hoping to just buy a small spool (about 30ft) of wire, or wire by the foot at Lowes.

>>2959898wire nuts
>>2959734I was told the soap stones in my current one absorb heat more than cast iron. The current one has a soapstone burning chamber and lid and doesn’t get that hot on the outside (it has two metal walls with some air flow inbetween them then soapstone on the inner wall). I think it may be designed to heat the entire house, but we only use it for the living room
Can I use a cold chisel to remove plaster from a brick wall? It looks a bit huge and dangerous, and I just tried removing the cracked plaster and the cement holding the brick wall together came away too. Imagine I am Michael J Fox-tier at this.

>>2960024I tend to avoid ratchets, honestly. The 90 degree ratchet is occasionally useful for torqueing something down, but all the screwdriver ones I've used have been annoying. If the tolerances are too loose it won't uncouple when you turn it backwards. Chang does some okay bits, but I don't trust him with ratchets. He still can't make a caliper that doesn't drain its own battery while "off".
Any ideas how to to attach plastic base (transparent here) to a metal plate (gray on top), given the device is 15x12x8 and the walls all are 1mm thick?Tis a bracelet device, a gift for me wife, must look fancy outside, I'll add rounded corners later
>>2960076Magnets glued to the back of the base, magnets glued inside the case.
What's the easiest way to make permanent markings on the side of brushed stainless-steel pots and pans?I'm talking something closer to laser-etching or -marking, not permanent marker. It must be something physical that will last as long as the pots and pans themselves.Ideally something that I can do with limited gear, or that could be done in something like a maker-space. I don't want to be buying some machine that I'll use once.
>>2960019>5 wirenuts will be cumbersome to get through a 1" rod.Not that guy - I'm >>2959900but even when using the crimp connectors, I'd advise you to make the length of each wire 1" different from each other.Assuming they're all the same length from the factory, clip 4" from one, 3" form another, 2" from the third, and 1" from the last one. When you feed them through the downrod none of the five are touching another.________________________x__________________________________________________________________x_________________________________| F |______________________________x______________________________| A |________________________________x____________________________| N |__________________________________x__________________________|__|

OH SHIT MY ROOF IS LEAKINGwe had a heavy rainstorm recently and my closet ceiling is dripping. can I use pic related to fix a leak like that? >roof is regular shingles>leak is located at the junction of a previous owners remodeling job and the original househow do I find the source of the leak if I cannot access the attic? initial quick look around on the roof shows no obvious holes.my attic is inaccesible, is it within the realms of possibility to cut an access point to my attic or should I consult a professional.
>>2960152Throw out your calendar and 2025 will never end
>>2960167Yes you can, go up on the roof and look for junctions of shingles with gaps, use your goop there. Might be easier to use the kind that you apply with a caulking gun. Even if you could get into the attic, it may not be leaking inside where the water is getting in from the outside. It'll probably be more obvious than you think.
>>2960167>>2960174To be more clear, it would be better to re-roof the area than to patch it that way. Where I am roofing season is just about done, so I'm assuming you're just trying to button up and get through winter, then fix it right in the spring once it warms up enough.

My father has an old, small trailer (about the right size to carry a riding lawn mower) covered in rust and wants to clean it up. What would be the best course of action to remove rust? It's too large to soak or dip it in something. He doesn't really have a workspace for it so spraying it down with something like mur-- a commonly available diluted solution of hydrochloric acid would probably kill more grass than he'd like. My first though was to throw a flap disc in the angle grinder for the the big parts, and work down to wire wheels in a rotary tool for the smaller parts and I guess naval jelly for a finishing touches before spray painting it.Any other suggestions?
Can shipping containers be buried in a stack like in picrel or would there be too much pressure from the sides?
>>2960251too much side pressure
>>2960251The rule is simple, you can't bury them.
>>2956249Blow torches; Say if I was looking for one to heat steel plates (1.5mm - 3mm) for bashing/shaping, what sort of heat output range would I be looking for? (From guggling I can find suggestions of around 1000c.)Is there a brand that you would recommend?Cheers anons.
I have a bunch of 12/2 armored metal cable wiring leftover from work. Assuming I use all the correct fittings, can I:Use it in my unsealed basement ceiling?Use it in an attic? Use it in finished, insulated interior walls?
>>2960286>>2960251I mean, technically, they would not be buried in dirt, there would only be containers stacked on each other sitting in a hole?
>>2960250MURIATIC ACIDURIATICACIDNo really that would be a bit strong for most mild rd-rusting jobs, but Ospho would be the perfect chemical for this application. If you don't slop it everywhere you can apply it exactly where you want with a container and a chip brush from harbor freight.
>>2960299How large of an area do you plan to hear and how often do you plan to do this? Torches are very inefficient for this unless it is a small spot and only occasionally. There is a reason forges exist.
>>2960307Side pressure would still buckle the walls. If you really wanted to you could probably extensively brace the walls and use the shipping containers as an interior form for a concrete shell outside of them. Then remove the bracing after the concrete has set up. Of course you would have to anchor them down to keep them from floating up as you pour concrete around them
>>2960310Probably hoping for a larger area similar to a small forge, but without the forge. Cheers anon.
>>2960250>What would be the best course of action to remove rust?Considering its size/shape probably an angle grinder and a flap disc or wire wheel. Get it down to bare metal, clean really well with solvent or mineral spirits, dry immediately and paint immediately with a decent metal rattle can like rustoleum. There is an evaporust gel you can keep wet on the parts with a paper towel or soak overnight, but thats expensive for what is likely a $100 trailer. If you have actually small parts just put them in a bucket with plain white vinegar for 24-72 hours, then paint as well.

>>2960299Oxy-propane torch with a rosebud tip for economy. Oxy-acetylene torch if you want to be a bit faster. Pic related is more or less what to get. Torch bodies are pretty much one and done. You adjust heat output by nozzle size and gas flow. Check out your local welding supply store for equipment and guidance so as to not blow yourself up, which is something you can do with oxyfuel.Oxyfuel torches produce far hotter flames than blowtorches, and the difference is very important for hot-working steel. A rosebud tip will let you heat to forging temps quickly. A cutting torch (which is a different kind of torch body with its own tips) can cut steel several inches thick. Oxy-acetylene is hot enough to torch weld steel effectively, if you're into that, though arc welding procedures have taken over for good reason.
>>2960250Wire cup/wheel on an angle grinder, with a smaller one on a drill (or ideally a die grinder) for tight spots. Use knotted (twisted) wire abrasives rather than straight/crimped. Use a full face shield AND safety glasses. Even knotted wire wheels like to throw wire fragments around.Flap disks can quickly remove metal, and they don't conform to tight details. It would remove steel to the level of the pit if you used one to remove rust from a pit. Wire wheels quickly remove paint and rust while removing very little steel and getting into small details. Straight/crimped wire abrasives are even better at getting into tight spots, but should be reserved for tight spots.
