i want to buy something vintage and i guess iconic for under $5,000

i'm guessing the best option is a grand seiko 3180?
>>
>>18095386
You can get vintage Piagets all day for under 5k. Why would you settle for a Seiko?
>>
>>18095388
That or you could get a Rolex. Something like an Oyster Perpetual Date. Plenty of them available for under 5000USD.

is it possible to get a 36mm oyster perpetual in that price range? i know the bigger ones are more popular, but i'd rather get a 36mm since i am a wristlet
>>18095406
i already own 3 other pre-quartz crisis mechanical seikos, i figure the grandfather of them all would be a nice thing to add but i am also concerned about something that old that's not water resistant or anything either at $5000. i've never bought a watch for more than $500 so far.
>>
>>18095416
Seriously though, where does one go from here? This pics feel is that of someone who's at his peak and has achieved anything he wants from life.
Would a more expensive watch be...."better" at this point? This feels genuine and with a lot of soul.
It's like... he didn't find the watch, the watch and him found each other to create this moment of bliss and appreciation of life itself.

>>

So it will be your first deep 4 digits watch?
Just don't expect it to be of higher quality in general. Be prepared to pay ""only"" for historical and sentimental value. Does that make sense? A modern 6K GS will feel (and actually is) a much better finished, polished, prettier, shinier watch with a movement that's, well, 60 years ahead. If you're one of the people who value Heart and Sentimental value, then go for it but please don't expect a ten fold jump in quality because you will be disappointed.

i get that, but i presume it'll be a step up in fit & finish compared to my similarly aged lord marvel, right?

i want to step up into a 4 digit watch, i feel like i've got enough sub $100 ones and a few ~$500 ones. i only really find the vintage stuff interesting though. well that and if i want to get a rolex i am just too uneducated to see any tangible difference on a datejust from 1964 or 2024 other than the 2024 one being "new" and i guess cleaner

The normie threshold stops at 500$
Everything above that is considered expensive and a lot of money to enter/get into a new hobby. And considering that 80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, 500$ for a completely unnecessary accessory, is a luxury.
Or if you live in a blue hellhole state/city, you can just paint yourself black and steal a watch and nothing will happen.

where do you guys sell your used watches? do you ever take them to a pawn shop, seems like the easiest and fastest way
>>
>>18095797
Sadly the only viable option is chrono24.
Pawn shops offer you less than half of what you bought it for.
>>
>>18095797
>pawn shops
why would anyone sell there unless they're desperate?
they'll give you maybe 40% of its value
>>
>>18095797
If you need to sell your watches, you need to reevaluate your poor decision making process that led you to get that watch in the first place.

That said, the best price you’ll get is selling directly through forums like WUS, but that comes with risk of getting scammed.
C24 and eBay are safer but have onerous fees that reduce the amount of money you’ll get.
>>
>>18095801
>>18095816
That's what I suspected too...
>>18095821
I don't need to sell anything. I'm just thinking about selling one particular watch because I'm not sure I'll use it that much anymore (I recently got a new one that I like more) and it's sort of redundant now. maybe I'll just keep it as a backup. I've got four watches in total for different occasions.
>>
>>18095835
What I ended up doing is gifting them left and right. Brothers, friends. And sell a one to a friend who always wanted it.
>>
>>18095835
That’s the problem when you binge on watches. You fall out of love with them very quickly.
What people rarely learn is that they get addicted to the feeling of buying a new watch, not the enjoyment of owning it.
>>
>>18095848
>they get addicted to the feeling of buying a new watch, not the enjoyment of owning it.

Exactly. And the new watch afterglow lasts less and less, even as the watches get more and more expensive.

Don’t forget also about the feeling of regret when they look at their watch box full of watches they don’t want anymore.
>>
>>18095848
>they get addicted to the feeling of buying a new watch, not the enjoyment of owning it.
This is why watch "flippers" give me the ick, they're like little children trying to assuage their itch for new shinies.
>>
>>18095857
In the case of watch collectors, they’re also doing it for attention on social media.

If they keep posting the same watch over and over, people will call them annoying so they get a new watch so their quasi-friends will call them based.

That’s how you end up with guys who live like bums but have a 10k+ watch on their wrist.
>>
I can't tell if an easy to rotate bezel is cheaper or superior. I like it better tho.
>>
>>18095883
Ease of operation is a design choice, a Blancpain FF, for example is much stiffer than a Submariner, but they’re both high-quality.

The thing to look out for is the amount of backplay in the mechanism. Good bezels have none.

I've consulted the poorfag guide.
The guide says that DW5600 should cost somewhere around 40$. The cheapest i can find is around 80$. I could save for it.

Or i could just buy W217h for general use and MQ24-7B as a dress watch. Those two will cost me maybe 25$ in total. What do you guys think? Is this a sound decision?

Get one. They're awesome watches if you like the clarity of design and purpose with rugged execution. Don't buy for the hype or the reputation though...then you'll end up selling it like all the other Speedy's on the secondary market.

Protip: try them on in store...the new 3861s fit almost identically to the older 1861s and 321s. If you like it, then try it on again another time when you're in a different mood. If you still like it, you win.

No worries. Got you.
https://files.catbox.moe/t7iea6.mp4

On a serious note, what makes a good watch to you, aka what's THE most important abd deciding factor when/before you buy a watch? For me, the dial is 60% of it and another 10% is the accuracy. Rest are case design, brand recognition (to those who know) and bracelet. Even though I find myself in awe whenever I hold an actually good bracelet. GS reeeally needs to step this up.
Wristlet side note: My exit game-watch was too big for me and that made me sadder than I thought it would. Anyone else knows this feel?

Seriously though, where does one go from here? This pics feel is that of someone who's at his peak and has achieved anything he wants from life.
Would a more expensive watch be...."better" at this point? This feels genuine and with a lot of soul.
It's like... he didn't find the watch, the watch and him found each other to create this moment of bliss and appreciation of life itself.
>>
>>18096807
What was it? Many watches in the 5k+ range unfortunately still have bracelets that are not too dissimilar to, say, a modern Seiko 5 bracelet. However the manufacturers that do focus on their bracelets get huge praise for it, so I really think others should do so as well.

Should I really care if my Hamilton and my other watch with a Sellita 210 movement (supposedly top grade) be around +10 and +15 spd or should I try to demagnetize it? I feel like other people get better accuracy than what I got
>>
>>18097286
Using the demagnetizer in small bursts isn't going to hurt anything. You way as well give it a try and see what happens. Is the Hamilton one of the newer powermatic variations or one of the older ETA ones? The new ones are regulated in house with lasers and shit and can't be adjusted by third parties, and they're usually regulated much better than that, but barring trying to demagnetize it or sending it in to Hamilton for service there's not much else you could do about it.

What's wrong with the Amphibia that would make it "not a real watch" ? It's a perfect entry into mechanical timepieces.

>>18097273
An amphibia was pretty early for me. I have a handful of watches that are inexpensive I've accumulated over the years through childhood, etc, but the Amphibia was the first mechanical I bought. It's my official swimming/pool/beach/watch since as stated it's fairly inexpensive and I know it'll stay waterproof if I don't open it (I won't)

I used the stock bracelet for a while but got sick of it and put it on a zuludiver rubber strap. Still got some sand stuck in the bezel but it rotates alright so whatever.

I personally liked this face more than the ones with a motif, I wanted one where there was no number replaced by the date window. I liked the stark Russian-ness of it.

Good watch. Only one is needed for the whole experience, though I wouldn't mind a Pripyat with the full lumed dial.

Cool idea but the dial just doesn't look appealing to me.
I absolutely adore how Moritz Grossmann makes their watches, especially the movements, but for some reason they refuse to make a basic watch with the old-school logo, a minimalist dial and indices, and the basic handwound movement.

You are weaving your own story on the timepiece with those scratches, they add tasteful wear on to it. Watches are meant to be worn and enjoyed. Think of the day you pass that on to your kid, they'll see you enjoyed life. That's a better story than "my dad never dared to wear this watch for fear of scratching it so it sat in a box most of the time".

Are clear or maybe colored jewels the next big thing in watchmaking?

Just bought my first automatic watch.
>combines the best parts of a tissot prx and a role oyster perpetual
>fraction of the price of either

Pretty chuffed with it lads.

Nah it's a bit too soft looking and I prefer the double bars at 12 and 6.

Enjoy your Tsuyosa then, much prefer that over the PRX tbqh fäm.

I still don't have a citizen, but there's this guy who wants me to get one with the Washi paper dial and the 5 seconds per year accuracy. I would've bought one by now because it might just be the best quartz watch of all time, but I'm iny exit-watch phase. And the citizen, or any citizen (sorry) doesn't fit in that category.

Me too, I thought hard about a prx but in the end i wasnt completely sold on either the dial texture nore the markers, and the hands are a bit phat as well. The bracelet is nicer than the citizen one though, I may replace my own one with a prx style one in time.

I wouldn't mind if they sell the same watch with another name on it for the old low price. I could care less about their name. It's not like the 100 now 200 shitter5 isn't made in china or some other SEA shithole with bare minimum QC if any.
