there truly is no reason to. all black prep just looks dorky, like waitstaff, tryhard, like shit. prep and trad tend to go for lots of color play, even within the dark academia shit like >>18246251 this anon suggested.
think about what about parts of 'goth' you want to keep when you change to prep/trad. are you into victorian/vampire goth? 80s goth? "i wear an all black suit with a black shirt and a black tie and crazy combat boots, i'm so goth" goth?
more importantly, you can listen to goth music while wearing light chinos

I'm hesitant that this might look a bit too modern, and also may not fit with the earthy tones of everything else including the Barbours I typically wear. Although, I do think it's a warm gray.
The alternative is something like this, which I also think looks strange, despite being more brown. Maybe I should just hold off on purchasing one.

A few that are somewhat less loud in here
Some of them have bigger neck openings then others
Also they don't charge VAT if you don't live in the uk which is nice, some brands just pocket that extra profit

In Zoom zoom's little brains, "Old Money" just means "rich attractive white people clothes". Conversely, Dark Academia means rich and intelligent white people clothes, Grandpacore (yes, really) means rich and old white people clothes. Self explanatory, really.

Bit of a long shot but where in Australia, Sydney specifically, do I find good menswear stores?

Moved here about a year ago and it is absolutely abysmal to find anything of good quality and cut. They don't have the usual brands I am used to from Europe.
Would prefer not to deal with online stores btw, I like trying on clothes before I buy them.

Thanks in advance.

My girlfriend booked a cabin in the woods as a birthday gift for the end of October, I'm going to take some tweed and see how well it blends in with the changing foliage. I know this is autistic but fuck it, it makes me happy so I'm going to run around the forest like a retard and see if I can blend in with anything.

My hypothesis is the glen plaid and glen check tweeds that are multicolor with browns, oranges, greens and reds will blend in, the herringbone and barleycorn will stand out more.

>>
>>18248786
>Is a blazer and tie really just a cheat code for easy fashion?
Pretty much. Throw a decent pair of chinos and loafers on and you're set. There's a reason certain looks have worked mostly unchanged for decade. Sure some things change slightly like lapel width and button height but a conservatively cut blazer that fits works just as well now as it did in the 1950s.

"Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam", or "Ceterum autem censeo Carthaginem esse delendam" (English: "Furthermore, (moreover) I consider that Carthage must be destroyed"), often abbreviated to "Ceterum censeo", "Carthago delenda est" (English: "Carthage must be destroyed"), is a Latin oratorical phrase. The term originates from the Roman Republic in the 2nd century BC, prior to the Third Punic War between Rome and Carthage. The expression was a call to arms by the party advocating destruction of Rome's ancient rival Carthage, which was thought to be rebuilding its capacity for further warfare. The phrase is particularly associated with the Roman senator Cato the Elder, who is said to have used it as the conclusion to all his speeches.

I have an academic ceremony tomorrow, do the stripes in my tie clash with the stripes on my shirt? I think it looks fine, but I’m aware of a general rule of avoiding stripes on stripes because they can clash and appear much too busy. If not this shirt, I can wear a white shirt w/ spread collar.

Yeah, they're always quite long, and I find the collar to be quite sloppy and not tight to the neck like I prefer. If you are ever considering buying more and would be open to other brands, then there's a shetland sweater article on permanent style. If you scroll to the bottom, you'll find garment length and chest measurements of a given size which have been tabulated for different brands. Bosie actually produce the longest shetlands according to the table, which holds true with my experience. A couple inches less makes a huge difference if you can get it.

i love polo green. i just got a big bottle of it (i live in a country where it's hard to get). i also wear polo blue EDP as a basic summer aquatic scent. dior eau sauvage is supposed to be a prep classic but it never clicked for me. but honestly, my daily office scent is old spice, it's a good clean barbershop scent and it's cheap as hell. then again, there's little conception of american prep where i live now, so i guess anything flies.

My wardrobe at the moment is OCBDs (3 university stripe, 2 white, 2 blue), five pairs of chinos from spier and mckay, and one pair of kamakura ivy 5 pocket khaki denim pants. Allen edmunds penny loafers, sperry venetian loafers for shoes. I wear varying colors of J.Press 3 button roll collar etc etc you know the drill. I don't have that waxed canvas barboury whatever, its not my style.
Anyways, my loafers aren't in great condition and my allen edmunds feel a bit too formal. Wondering if I should get a pair of GH Bass Weejuns (they have some plaid ones on their site) or some sperry flat bottom loafers that are a bit more dressed down. I think I can wear pretty much whatever kind of shoe if I don't wear a blazer, but I get the feeling that once I put on the blazer with nice shoes, the formality goes too high for the office environment. I try to copy the OCBD blog guy, but his fits are crazy good and his clothes are all faded/worn to perfection and I'm just not there yet.

Another thing, for the kamakura 5 pocket ivy pants, they're absolutely my favorite pair of pants, and I'm wondering if the pennant 5 pocket from J press is something you guys know is of decent quality. There's also duck head among others, just not sure if I should bite the bullet and order a few more off kamakura rather than test the waters with another brand that could be of lesser quality.

>Weejuns
Don't do it. I just grabbed a pair, the fit is great but the leather is cheap as shit. I'm not well trained on shoe leather quality but even I can tell the difference between these and my Allen Edmonds, Alden, Sebago, etc. My Cole Haan loafers are much higher quality, that should tell you something.

I think Allen Edmonds are great, there's a certain formality cap on loafers in my opinion. If you want something that looks more casual Ranncourt, Grant Stone, Oak Street Bootmakers, Meermin and Alden have great options. Older Sebago loafers are fantastic value second hand, same with Trask loafers if you get the miUSA ones.

I think a striped shirt and striped tie can work, something feels off about the tie and jacket combo though.

What kind of wool trousers casually so they dont look like orphaned suit trousers and are still comfortable? Flat/Pleated, belt/adjusters, flannel/twill/?, lined/unlined, crease/no crease, turn up/not
>>
>>18252249
The more pattern/texture the trousers have, the less they look like orphaned trousers. However trousers don't suffer quite the same stigma as suit jackets, you can get away with wearing plain grey suit trousers outside of a suit and no one's going to yell that they're orphaned.
If you want the most casual cut it would probably be full cut, belt, pleats and turn ups/cuffs.

I quite like these natural color frame knit ones.

But im wondering if i should just go with Harley's Of Scotland.
The price will be about the same, thickness is similar but the Harley's has saddle shoulders while the other is flat knit with attached sleeves.
Im wondering if the saddle shoulders improve fit and help the garment keep it's shape better or if the differences are mostly aesthetic.
Anything else i should be considering in the $100-$150 range other then the brands in the pastebin?

What type of knits do you think are nice to get in a shetland wool? I don't like when items in my wardrobe overlap and there is some redundancy, for example I think a cable knit is probably nicer and looks better in a cashmere, so I'd be less likely to buy a cable shetland. I'm just not sure what is really beautiful in shetlands and makes the most out of them. It's the same reason why I'd buy a rich heathered gray sweatshirt over a navy one.

Is it worth getting non-brushed shetland or do you think brushed is the best for them?
Any roll necks or are they best left to other styles, perhaps ribbed merino etc or donegals?
Shetlands in dark muted colors like charcoal and olive green, only pastels, or exclusively warm lighter colors?

You don't need to dry clean everything, all your undershirts, socks, underwear, and cotton pants and OCBD's can be machine washed, just hang them up to dry, give them a good shake beforehand and once they dry just hang them up, any wrinkles are gone within the first minute of wearing, that's what I do with all my clothes.
Just drop off all your dry clean items at work.

Sorry, it depends on your standard for "wrinkly". I machine wash in delicates cycle (shirts buttoned up, inside out, collar and sleeves not buttoned), then flip them back right side out and button everything up to dry, indoors, 68F 50% humidity. They're always a bit stiff the moment you put them on, but they turn super soft after a few minutes as well. Its not iron smooth or fresh out of the dryer smooth, but its more than adequate for me in an office setting.

>>18255821
I haven't heard of anyone else here purchasing them, or purchasing from Kamakura at the same rate as I've been doing the last few months, so I'm assuming it was from my post. I've had pants with more substantial fabric, duluth trading in particular, but the issue here is the way the pants are cut to conform to the body and body movements. I have pants from Spier and McKay that are nice, but its as if they were cut and designed for someone with a different body shape.
I actually just received the Kamakura unstructured ivy jacket, and it fits as if it were tailored for me, which seems absurd as its only sold in S/M/L/XL sizing. The material is for sure higher quality than any of the J.Press jackets I own. Just typing all this out, I don't think I'll even bother looking at other pants, I seriously doubt I will find anything comparable to the Kamakura pants.

There's literally nothing wrong with that color, it's just less versatile than dark brown.
For suits and sport coats it works well with light to medium grey, olive and other shades of green, stone, light khaki, and light shades of navy. It's just not a fall/winter color. Don't try and dye them yourself, just put them aside for spring and summer use.

If anyone wants to explain how that color doesn't pair well with the colors I mentioned, I'm all ears. Again, dark brown is a more traditional and versatile choice, but this isn't a bad color.

I live in Norf Bongland and it rains way too much for suede. I've got a pair of Astorflex boots and have conditioned & waterproofed them, but if it's supposed to rain a lot I will not wear them. Thinking of getting these from Loake.
>>
>>18258734
Lacoste makes nice polos but it's obnoxious that you have to specifically source the french domestic market ones to get the good stuff
>>
Is a 1" belt too narrow for a dress belt?
>>

No 1" is the standard for dress belts

Actually im looking now and it seems like they sell the L.12.12 on the us website. I would have to do some digging to see if there is still a difference. I think the french ones used to be produced domestically but it doesn't look like they still are.

So the french Lacoste website has a few made in France polos but they are all ugly so fuck it.
Maybe they make some cheap polos they sell to thridies but it looks like the standard classic they sell in US and France is the same now

i need advice for ties and i think this is probably the only thread where i will get it. i am going to start a new job where i have to wear a suit and tie every day. i only have 3 ties right now that are pretty bad, they look cheap and feel cheap. what brands would you recommend for good quality ties. i am not trying to stand out with crazy patterns, but i still want the ties to be nice.
>>
>>18258814
Just buy a bunch of pre-owned silk repp ties on ebay. Brand doesn't matter too much but avoid cheap shit brands and make sure the ties are the proper length for you and are in good condition.
No reason to pay $60-$100 to get new ties
>>
>>18258814
I love ties. Good brands include:

S-tier: $$$ ($200+/tie)
- Charvet
- Hermes
- Ferragamo
- Drakes
These are some of the highest quality ties, both in materials and craftmanship. You will get patterns and details here you won't find anywhere else. Be aware that these are a power item in some workplaces, reserved for the bigdicks. If you show up to you first day on Wall Street wearing an Hermes critter tie, you will raise some eyebrows.

A-tier: The Ivies ($70-$200/tie)
- The Andover Shop
- Ben Silver
- Brooks Brothers
- Gitman Bros.
- Polo Ralph Lauren
These are great ties to build out your collection. Ties from these brands tend to have a "classic" feel, exuding a collegiate charm. Ties like a Brooks Brother #1 stripe are the closest thing that exists to an "essential" tie.

B-tier: Getting Started ($20-$70/tie)
- J. Crew
- Vineyard Vines
- The Tie Bar
No one is going to be impressed when they flip your tie and see it's from the Tie Bar, but they make a huge selection of better than average quality neckwear for cheap. When I got my first white-collar job, those were all I wore. These brands aren't as sought-after as those above, and some like VV can be hit or miss, but they're a great value.

I have ties from all of these brands, so ask any questions if you'd like. There's many others I left out, but hopefully this gets you started
>>
>>18258823
i will search around for some pre-owned options.

>>18258848
i appreciate the advice. i will probably look into the mid range ties to start. out of those in a-tier, what brand would you say has the best craftsmanship? a big problem with my cheap ties is that they all started fraying so quickly. i won't have a large amount to start and i want to make sure the ties i do get will last for a while.

I wear a Basque beret from Laulhère. Love it as it's quite versatile and keeps you dry. Just need to put up with people occasionally saying bonjour to you.
Other than that I wear wool watchcaps/beanies and kufi haji.

5, it has sleeker lines than a casual beefroll but the near right angles towards the upper keeps it from having that sleek pointed European look.

Will I regret this purchase from suitsupply? I'm looking for a pair of wool trousers I can wear casually in the English climate.
The fabric is an unknown to me but they advertise it for casual wear
>>
>>18259475
Yes, you will. Firstly, they are far too slim and those cuffs are huge. Secondly, and most importantly, navy wool trousers look awful as a separate trouser especially when they are as dark and smooth as these. I'd avoid navy at all cost really. Perhaps only decent in a flannel.
>>
>>18259475
On top of what the other guy said, "traveller fabric" makes me think they probably have some unnecessary synthetic/stretch/noniron shit.
Flannel is a great choice, or even tweed. For casual pants you want more texture and a less formal color (grey is fine though).

I purchased a pair of Crockett & Jones Grasmeres for $200 AU (approximately $14.29 US)

Yeah I guess I'm kind of looking for something more "fun". Most good rain jackets look pretty bland. LL Bean has some cool patterns but they're not waterproof. I might just go with something from HH at this point.

I like this jacket too I wish I could find it or a men's version.

Anyone get a MTM southwick Douglas pattern navy blazer from Rochester? Seriously considering and wondering if it's worth it.

>1.Rochester Tailored Clothing is headquartered in Rochester, New York, at the historic Hickey Freeman factory. Established in 1899, it's the oldest tailoring house in the United States.

>2. "Hickey Freeman" is a separate intellectual property held by Authentic Brand Group. As of this year, garments bearing the name Hickey Freeman will be made in Mexico.

>3. So it's a bit confusing, but the heart and soul of the Hickey Freeman label (the craftspeople, the facility, the machines, the legacy) is now in the hands of RTC. They own the legacy means of production, but they no longer own the name.
Yeah why not
As long as they haven't shit the bed in since the ownership change
>>
>>18260253
A rep from Eqaulet that works with Rochester and formally worked with Southwick claims the quality is even better from Rochester. Was hoping someone here had some experience with both so as to provide more insight and back up the claims, given it won't be cheap

Will I get a huge ugly crease across the shoulders of a barbour if I use a thin clothes hanger and not a proper jacket hanger?

Also, it's a regular garment bag enough to keep them from getting wax everywhere if I'm storing next to normal clothes in a wardrobe?

I am always curious about the people here and on r/NavyBlazer. Is it mostly larpers or just tryhards? I feel like real richfags are too busy having sex or managing their businesses to be posting about clothes on 4chan or reddit. Most of them probably just wear sweatpants too.
>>
>>18260898
>Is it mostly larpers or just tryhards?
People just enjoy the simplicity and timelessness of menswear. You don't even need to think about your outfits most of the time because everything pairs with everything and it's suited for most social situations excepts sports.
>>
>>18260922
menswear is not simple or timeless lol

it's also very affected

I'm a professor at a top 20 university (stemcel tho) and I like the ivy style. Me wearing it isn't quite a larp but people are right in that the majority of people even at top universities are really rocking prep anymore. Mostly just larper humanities students wearing it

>>18260826
Anon, I know this is going to be difficult to process but just because it's called "ivy style" it doesn't mean that the only people who wear it went to ivy League schools.

And what's the point of your comment? If you don't like the style, why come here and post? Are you that small in your day to day life that whining in a thread no one forced you to open makes you feel better?
>>18260925
>menswear is not simple or timeless lol
>it's also very affected

Please show one of your fits to demonstrate proper non affected clothing. Once you cross a certain point beyond purely utilitarian there's affectation in all fashion
