Most of us don't hate him. We just wish he would either behave himself or go away.

He doesn't actually contribute to the thread except pointless blogging when he's in a good mood (or if he wants some (You)s) or trolling when he's in a bad mood. This general is supposed to be about watches, not posting a picture of your dinner with a watch in the foreground and calling it "watch related".

When he's not around the thread is a lot slower, sure, but it also tends to stay on topic a lot more. If you want a fast-moving thread, go to /b/ or something.

The problem with this bracelet is that all the links are the same width. The links should be narrower as they get closer to the clasp. This is why GS bracelets look so bad.

They look nicer, but that's about it. Regular ones work better and fit better.
>>

I don't know what to say anon, I hate nato straps because they make the watch look like cheap crap and make it thicker. Better buy a bracelet or a nice rubber strap

If you're buying a watch from a certain brand, do you only buy the signature model of the brand?
For example, the signature model for Carter is the Tank Louis Cartier. For JLC it's the Reverso Classic in steel.
>>
>>18280472
Just buy what you like, retard
>>
>>18280482
>Just buy what you like
This is actually the stupidest advice possible. People don't know what they like and they make stupid decisions.
This thread exists to help people avoid wasting their money on ugly-ass shitters that don't fit their wrists.

The only people who say "Buy what you like" are the ones constantly forcing themselves to not drown under a tide of buyer's remorse.
>>
>>18280485
The point is you go and try out a bunch of watches and you buy whatever makes you feel good rather than chasing whatever everyone else says is good. Like everyone says get a submariner, get a gmt master, get an explorer 2, but you might find you just like wearing datejusts. Everyone says stay away from panerai, but if you try them on and you feel good about wearing them you should probably consider buying one and forget what everyone says about them. Everyone says get a speedmaster but maybe you like wearing navitimers more. You just have to try wearing a lot of watches on a lot of different bracelets and straps to figure out what you like.
>>
>>18280485
Exactly.

Ultimately, everyone buys what they like, but good advice can help them focus a little more effectively and avoid stupid mistakes.

>I want to buy this 47mm Panerai.
But you have 6" wrists. If you like the Panerai style, let's see if we can find something that has that style but also fits you.
>I want a Submariner, so I'm going to buy this Seiko cope instead
Why don't you stop for a second a see how long it will take to save up for that Sub? It may not take as long as you think and you'll end up with the watch you actually want.

>>18280492
Trying on a lot of different watches is common advice here. People who just buy what they like usually do so as an impulse buy and almost immediately regret it. A good example is the guy who was obsessed with the TAG Heuer Monaco a couple threads ago. He loved the watch but we all told him to hold off and try it on first. Lo and behold, he found out it's a shitter and we helped him save a bunch of money.
>>
>>18280472
>If you're buying a watch from a certain brand, do you only buy the signature model of the brand?
>For example, the signature model for Carter is the Tank Louis Cartier. For JLC it's the Reverso Classic in steel.

No, I don't think you have to.
A couple months back, a guy posted a gold Tank Francaise. Obviously, bittercel got jealous and tried to tell him he should have bought a Tank LC. This guy clearly didn't know who bittercel was because he tried to explain to him what he liked about the Francaise.

I think the closest thing to what you're talking about is experiencing the reference pieces. Like, you don't have to own a Speedmaster Pro but you should at least have some experience with it to understand why it's the reference entry-level luxury chronograph. Then, when someone compares another chrono to the Speedmaster, you have a better idea of what they're talking about.

>Do Air Kings have good WR?
Vintage AKs, the 34mm ones, have 100m WR.
The new AKs just look like shit (but also have 100m WR).

If you want something newer, the Santos de Cartier has 100m WR and is a really versatile watch. On the bracelet, it's a sports watch, on the strap, it's dressy. You can swap between the two with nothing more than a thumbnail. No tools required.
>>
>>18280549
Sort of. The idea of solar sounds good, but the reality is that batteries cost like 2 dollars apiece and last for years, while solar cells and their capacitors do wear out and when they go, that's the end of your watch.
>>
>>18280555
>>18280558
>>18280561
What kind of watch is the air-king? I mean what would be its purpose or use case?
>>
>>18280555
Air kings have the same 100m water resistance that oyster case watches normally do, but all of the good examples are old enough now that you shouldn't fully trust them to be that tight.
>>
>>18280572
Air-King is a line of watches that Rolex sells. They're sort of pilot's watches. Picrel is an example of a vintage version, but they came in a bunch of different dial and bezel configurations.

>>
>>18280581
the endgame
>>
>>18280524
Several years ago, probably when this shitty thread was still on /g/ay, there was a post that completely changed my thinking on this matter. Funny how anonymous shitposting can, once in a bluemoon, actually resonate for whatever dumb reason.

Some anon was talking about their ultra miserly grandfather's philosophy on spending money on frivolities. He was some gorillionaire old pole or kike or whatever but basically

>if you're going to spend real money on some unnecessary trifle, like a luxury watch, then you shouldn't buy it until you can afford to buy 20 of it, lose them all, and not feel a thing

So in accorance to this ultra-prudence say you wanted a sub for 10 grand you'll have to be able to stomach, financially, a complete wipeout of 200k and not be utterly ruined by it.
If you can't afford to just flush 200k down the drain and not become destitute then you should really be using that money for something more pertinent like making more money instead.

You don't have to go ultrajewstinct with this though.
I've lowered it from 20 to 12 because I'd actually like to be able to enjoy a nice watch before I'm all liverspotted, arthritic and before I inexplicably develop a predilection for tasteless shit like RM and carbon fibre.
Food for thought.
>>
>>18280555
Go Vintage.
>>
>>18280589
You're not wrong.

One of my friends is like that. He makes really good money but doesn't like to spend any of it on himself. He dresses like shit. Lives in a shit neighborhood. Drives a shit car. Doesn't go on vacations. He doesn't plan on retiring early. His only pleasure in life is opening up his banking app and seeing seven figures.

There's got to be a healthy balance between enjoying your life while you're young enough to enjoy it and saving for the future.
>>
>>18280549
There are eco-drives that are still functional at their 20th year. The secret to their longevity is that they were worn daily in that time or at the very least were not stored in a dark drawer for stretches of time which kills the battery.
Likely the closer you get to 20 or whatever the less charge the battery will hold. Some at the 18yr mark note that their batteries will only last barely 3 days if left completely out of the light compared with the year or so it could survive in the dark when new.

Wear it daily and actually go outside once in a while and solar watches are a neat idea. Citizen used to promote 40years in their publicity. They've since scrubbed that but, under ideal conditions ie. not leaving your shit in the dark, then at leat 20 years is possible.
>>
>>18280589
I understand the sentiment and obviously it's a strategy that's going to work, bit taken to that extreme is a little ridiculous isn't it? I don't see back breaking financial ruin coming for a guy with a secure job making $80-100k who already has the house and car and wife in order because he treated himself to a datejust or submariner. Don't go nuts and buy one every year for your birthday, of course, but a few thousand on a watch you're going to wear for 20 to 30 years and gift to the kids later isn't that bad.

I mentioned ordering this watch a few threads ago and someone asked me to post about it after I received it, so here it is. 36mm chinese made daydate homage with one of the new Peacock Dandong movements, fully wound it runs a few seconds fast per day but just wearing it over the last few days with light activity it's wound down a little to where it's staying pretty much where it is day to day. The day snaps over instantly with the date change, no waiting until 3am for it to fully turn over. I've been enjoying it.

One problem is I guess since they're expecting it to be popular with ladies and gay wristlets it doesn't have enough links in the bracelet for me to get a truly comfortable fit the way I like it. It's just barely tighter than I like, one more link would be perfect. SO I asked Sugess if I could get more bracelet links and they said no but if I could find someone to fabricate them they'd reimburse me for that. Which is really weird and they may as well have just told me to eat a dick because I don't know what asshole I'm going to find to make me one bracelet link for a Chinese bracelet.

I used to think the indices on the current Oyster Perpetual were too large and blocky, and the double indices were doubly stupid.
But seeing pics of the Citizen Tsuyosa made me instantly change my mind for some reason; now I think the (double) indices are neat, young and sporty.

Strange how seeing a cheap version of something can instantly change your perspective like that.

It's not really a pilot's watch, it's an OP with distinctive bezels and dials. It was named Air King after the RAF during WWII. All in all, a marketing move by Rolex. However, for me, the vintage Air Kings, the vintage OPs and the Explorers are the best looking Rolex watches. I would say that it is, like the OP, an elegant field watch, a watch halfway between a field watch and a dress watch.

Anyone here assemble or service their own watches?
Do you consider buying things a hobby?
>>
>>18280786
Yes and no. Depends on where you are. You'll see them at Airports and maybe at a '"high class" bar in Ginza somewhere but not in a casual night out.
People recognize the watch as
>"Ah! That's the brand tgat Shohei Ohtani wears!"
and that's mostly it for normies. Others recognize the brand because there are a decent amount of flyers showing the White Birch specifically.

They put out some cool-looking designs like anon's 422, but it's not the same.

I don't know enough about them to say one way or the other, but I imagine they probably fall short in terms of features or value. TAG Heuer's smartwatch was really expensive, if I remember correctly. A smart watch costs a couple hundred bucks and lasts about ten years. That's basically the cost of a strap or a service from a normal watch company.

That's a very different watch from the Sinn. The Sinn is an almost sterile pilot's watch. That Tudor is borderline dressy. The Tudor is the more technically advanced, more modern movement.

You'll also have an easier time getting the Tudor serviced, since ADs are everywhere. Sinn ADs aren't as common.

The classic Black Bay is perfectly serviceable in the manner you'd wear it. (I'd definitely try out multiple sizes, though. They all wear larger than their case sizes)
Different dial colors would also make the watch feel more or less dressy.

How do I communicate to the Rolex AD in no uncertain terms that I'm not going to play their faggot ass games anymore and if they won't sell me a watch I'll just buy one used and they can go fuck themselves?
>>
>>18281342
These games are still going on? Just fly to japan and get an explorer or something.
>>
>>18281342

I'm somewhat guilty of that, but for me the 'signature' models tend to look the best. I have a few Speedies, I have a JLC Reverso in steel, and I love the look of the Breitling Navitimer, the Rolex Sub and Day-Date, and so forth. I wouldn't say no to a Patek Calatrava, or a Lange 1, etc...they're all great watches. But I don't ONLY buy the signature model...the ones I've bought happen to be the best in terms of aesthetic and design.

>>18280549
No...you change the battery less, lower maintenance cost than a mechanical, and generally better timekeeping.

It's best experienced, Fren...words are not sufficient, nor could I match CitizenChad's eloquence. I'd recommend seeing the watch in person...that should clarify everything for you. That Citizen is the ultimate 'set-it-and-forget-it' watch...you never have to adjust it in your lifetime. Remarkable, but something definitely to be experienced. What watch are you sporting today, Fren?
>>
>>18281479
That's not an answer, how do you read the day and month on this perpetual calendar and where is the leap year indicator?

Buy a nicer solar watch than a casio. It's your casio that "feels cheap", not the underlying tech.
