Are shoes with wide toe boxes a meme?
>>
>>18290648
Yes. The npc golems have hyped those shoes for the last couple of years. The crazy is akin to what currently is happening with the hate of plastic. Just golem schizophrenia, just the rejection of something based on memes ,on tiktok and internet knowledge. Just monsters following the herd

Same as the "barefoot" meme, really. I actually have a pair of Vibram FiveFingers. Exceptionally uncomfortable going downhill on a hike. Also, the notion that you "just need to start running with your forefoot, bro", is guaranteed to cause pain and injury in 95% of people.

I'm not saying wide toe boxes are harmful or anything. They're probably totally innocuous. They just don't provide any kind of benefit.
>>

>Exceptionally uncomfortable going downhill on a hike
Then stop heel striking. Learn to walk normally.
>Also, the notion that you "just need to start running with your forefoot, bro", is guaranteed to cause pain and injury in 95% of people.
Well, yeah, because 95% of people have deformed feet from wearing degenerate narrow shoes all their lives. Their toes and front part of the feet are too narrow and crooked to be able to spread out naturally and bear the weight of their body effectively.
Start being barefoot at home as much as possible before jumping into barefoot shoes. If you're going to go straight into them, then of course you're going to injure yourself since your feet are too deformed to function normally.

i don't get the obsession, like sure having your toes bunched up and compressed together is bad but most people don't have it that bad, and wearing wacky barefoot shoes that look bad just to have your toes be wider doesn't seem like an actual health benefit to me, just a different kind of aesthetical look

I tried wearing "minimal" shoes for a couple years and have concluded they are about 90% meme. The ultra wide toe box did nothing for me, my normal boots are good enough quality that they actually fit my feet. It's not like I'm trying to cram my toes into some gay extra narrow dress shoes anyway. The zero drop soles were kinda nice if I was standing around a lot, they did reduce strain on my lower back by a small but noticeable amount. However, wearing them on concrete sucked for my joints, and if you have to climb ladders in wet or snowy conditions they are extremely dangerous. If none of those things apply to you then go for it. Wasn't worth it for me though.

Are silicone toe spreaders are meme?
>>
>>18292993
A healthy foot doesn't have all the toes squished together and pointing to the outside. That's a deformed shoe foot. It gets that way from being crammed inside degenerate pointy shoes for years and decades. The toes on an actually healthy foot point straight (or even spread out like the fingers on an open hand) and have plenty of space between them, especially between the big toe and the first toe.
>>
>>18290793
Everyone says "learn how to walk" but never actually shows how. I don't understand how to not step heel-first when walking and all I get is insults when I ask.
>>
>>18291741
for you
>>
>>18294272
Yes. They are a meme. Don't waste your money on plastic junk. You don't need that. Just stay barefoot when you're at home and size up when wearing shoes. Most people wear shoes that are too small for their foot. Your toes aren't supposed to reach the tip of the shoe when you're standing in them. There should be at least like 2cm of gap in the front and you should be able to easily stick your finger in the shoe behind your ankle when standing up.

Working out barefoot at home also helps (once you're used to walking barefoot), although don't lift heavy weights in the beginning because your feet aren't used to supporting that amount of load without the support of shoes. Do some calf raises (and/or stand on your toes) while being barefoot to strengthen your toes and help them spread out.
>>
My big toe is actually pointing OUTWARDS. Am I ok?

Stay barefoot at home and walk barefoot in your yard or a park lawn. If you try to heel strike when you're barefoot, it will hurt like a bitch. So your body will automatically stop doing it and after a while will adjust your gait to something that's more natural.

Also, take smaller steps. Wearing shoes makes us take long strides, which causes us to heel strike, and since there's plenty of cushioning in the shoe, it doesn't hurt to hammer your heel into the ground, so we keep doing it and fuck up our gait, posture and all our joints. But when you take smaller steps, your foot falls almost flat with every step, like this skeleton guy in gifrel, rather than heel first.

So tl,dr:
>practice walking barefoot
>take smaller steps to prevent heel striking
>>
>>18294544
>walk barefoot in your yard or a park lawn
Imagine the fungus.

I play sports. I don’t like narrow shoes and don’t need cushioning unless I’m playing sports. I have no idea how running shoes got so popular. I bought a pair of cushioned running shoes a few years ago to get through an injury and I’m never buying them again, unless I get another injury.
Barefoot shoes with no cushioning is great for every day use if you don’t walk very long distances.

Go get a consult at a physiotherapist. They'll make you walk and run and will immediately be able to point out what you're doing wrong.

I'd apparently been walking wrong my whole life with my pelvis tilted the wrong way. They're also able to give you a bunch of take home exercises that'll help you loosen up muscles that might've been neglected from doing stuff the wrong way.

Worth the $50 bucks over trying to read up on the internet and hurting yourself because you're doing shit too fast or plain wrong.

i have 4e feet so all shoes are super narrow shoes for me; sizing up makes no difference because the shape of the toe box is actually quite important. in fact, even most 4e shoes are too narrow simply due to the shape of the toe box. the amount of toe point on modern shoes is entirely fashion driven and wide toeboxes are closest to normal than most other shit. i actually have custom made shoes and they're the only things that even get close to fitting my foot due to width and shape.

there is no science behind modern footwear, even 'sports shoes' . so it gets a bit silly really.

Barefoot, from shoes. Walk without shoes as much as you can. Workout without wearing shoes. Your foot and toes need just as much exercise and strength training as the rest of your body. It's weird how people treat their feet as if they're not a part of their body and always bind them inside plastic and leather casts.

Most people are like this, we wear socks and shoes all our lives, and unless you're wearing loose socks and hipster clown shoes from infancy, it's like a very mild form of foot binding. You can't undo it by switching shoes now.
The only real effect it will have is that it can change your gait and engage your calves and foot muscles more.

I wear the hipster clown shoes. They give me a great burn in my lower legs and sometimes even my feet when I run, especially on inclined trails. I didn't wear them when I was 4 or 6 or 10, and I somehow seriously doubt you did. You probably, like everybody else, wore some sneakers your parents got you that slowly deformed your feet. Kids aren't typically thinking about how their heelies are shaping their developing feet. They're thinking about how fuckin' awesome they feel rolling around in them.

You're just a fucking retarded braindead monkey like 99% of the people who lurk in this animalistic shithole.
Deformed "bunion" feet is a genetic condition that hits some people regardless of the shoes they wear.
Feet did not "evolve" in any direction, you fucking stupid smelly brainlet. It takes at least centuries for a body part to evolve in large sections of society.
Learn to properly size your shoes, don't buy shit-tier shoes and don't walk like a fucking nigger. This is literally all you have to do to have healthy feet.
The pictures you keep posting are severe skeletal medical conditions that do not depend on shoes, or at least not necessarily, not only, and especially not on a vast scale. The fact that a super tiny amount of people have feet like that does not mean that the shoes that the other 98% of humanity wears without consequences are bad. You're just too fucking retarded to understand this.

And then people wonder why they have crooked, abominable feet. When your feet are always bound, the muscles in them start atrophying, the bones lose their mass and density -- because they no long have to work as hard to support the body's weight and resist impact forces, since the shoe cast and the cushioning is doing most of the work -- and as a result their feet start deforming into the shape of the shoe, most of which are too narrow for the natural shape of the foot.

And since the feet are now weakened (and also because of the drop most shoes have that makes you stand and walk at a weird angle on the toes), the rest of the leg, hips, lower back and entire spine will try to compensate for it, which changes their alignment and the entire body's posture, causing imbalances and creating stress points. Hence, all the knee, hip, back aches that shoe wearers often deal with.

Buy a handmade pair of shoes. English, American, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish. Pick them half a size bigger than your size. Don't wear them all day. There, you're done.

What brand makes good shoes with wide toe boxes then?
>>
I've worn barefoot shoes for close to a year now, and the difference is insane.
My soles have transformed, I have increased control over my toes and my legs don't ache at all.
If your sole (hehe) reason for not trying barefoot shoes is "they look bad", then I'm sorry to say you're a fucking idiot.

-

tl;dr:
barefoot shoes aren't a meme, but I wish they were, then maybe more people would try them out.

"Shoe wearers"? You mean 99% of humanity? God you sound so annoying. Ive worn regular ass shoes all my life (25 years), and I stand and walk all day at work, and besides sore feet at the end of the day i feel fine.
>>
>>18290648
the wide toe box shoes i thought were a cool idea until most of these wide toe boxes don't account for your index toe being longer than your big toe. most of these end up being too short in the toe box because they're too focused on the width.

on top of that most of the wide toe box shoes are so focused on being "ZERO DROP" so there's basically zero actual insole to them and they fall apart in 3 weeks while also wrecking your sole skin and forming up callus that are annoying and hurt to walk on.

i got a pair of them cheap off amazon and my girlfriend told me it looked like i was wearing clown shoes.

I don't like sandals.
I've owned lots of boots and shoes.
And 1 pair of these exact Birkenstocks.

Since 13-years-old, literally the best pair of footwear I've ever owned. For comfort, use, and health, I endorse these sandals.
>>

I've enjoyed LEMS.
Extremely durable. Extremely flexible. Different styles. Worth their $100 price. Pick your size; they actually run longer than you'd expect.

They're great, but they sadly won't be effay until good shoe makers start making some.

Also need some barefoot shoe makers to accept compromises once in a while. Sometimes I want a wide toebox but am willing to do without super flexibility that makes the shoe look cheap. Pic related, getting closer but still not quite there.

I genuinely would prefer to wear clown shoes over these. Fucking hideous. Why are they so strict to mimic the natural shape of feet. Why can't they at least exaggerate the form in the other extreme to create something interesting, the way the narrow pointed toe shoes do?
>>
>>18325328
Too many people tried barefoot for the first time since they turned 3, ran around doing heelstroke and then declared being barefoot as unhealthy and dangerous because their ankles and knees hurt.
>>
You're not supposed to land on your forefoot regardless of what type of shoes you wear.

It's fine to let your heel touch the ground first as long as the momentum places the peak load on your foot when your knee is directly above it. The lack of a heel stack just makes that initial touch unnecessary.
>>
>>18327721
>You're not supposed to land on your forefoot
I thought you were supposed to land on your forefoot and avoid the heel?
>>
>>18328350
When walking, just walk heel-toe like a normal person. Habitual toe-walking is actually a symptom of autism.

When running, sprinting is done on the toes, but normal jogging can be done heel-toe. Even some of the fastest professionals heel-strike. Some scientists decided to see how the barefoot runners in Kenya ran, and most of them were heel-strikers, even though they were barefoot.

As long as you're not landing with your foot out in front of you (called overstriding) then you're at no risk of injury.
>>
>>18328350
>and avoid the heel
if you already cushioned the impact with your toe muscles why should you avoid the heel? There exist step patterns between toe walking and heel strike
>>
>>18327392
I ran barefoot for multiple years and had a coach who instructed me on proper running technique: it’s completely evolutionarily bonkers to run a half marathon a week on concrete with barefoot shoes, I got shin splints constantly during the last year and now I just swim
>why don’t you just get a train into the woods and ru-
Too effort
>>
>>18328589
animals that roam on hard ground dont have hooves for nothing
>>
>>18328350
If we want to be specific, the outer half of your midfoot (the soft, cushion-y part) is what should be receiving the most force during your stride. It's fine for your heel to touch the ground first as long as your momentum rolls you onto your midfoot when the peak of downward force is applied to your foot.

Heel striking specifically refers to overstriding and placing the brunt of the impact and weight actually on the heel, which will definitely cause problems.
>>
>>18328847
>It's fine for your heel to touch the ground first as long as your momentum rolls you onto your midfoot when the peak of downward force is applied to your foot.
to add to this, the calcaneus (heel bone) is specifically evolved for this purpose. No other animal has a rounded heel bone like we do, and no other animal walks like we do.

it's fun hiking with a friend wearing shoes when im barefoot. i have a hard time keeping up with a lot of debris that can puncture my sole but i love not giving a damn about mud, water, w/e. cleaning my feet after "earthing" has become a bit of a ritual.
>>
>>18312360
i have a pair being resoled right now, my only complaint about them is the outsole wears out fairly quickly. hopefully vibram lasts longer.
>>
>>18291676
No, they're called toes, which are on your feet. Fingers are on your hands.
>>
>>18291898
IMHO the only case where it makes sense is for babies and infants. A baby can’t speak if his shoes are slightly too small and hurt him a little. At least with wide toeboxes his feet won’t end up looking like >>18290674 when he grows up.
Once you are a grownup and can speak, just get shoes with an adequate size (and not a full size too small) to avoid ending up like >>18291374
>>
