The 1960s were the civilizational peak of the west. Nothing comes even close in term of aesthetics. Nothing. Everything just looked kino back then: watches, cars, fashion, every day objects. Even the fucking fridges looked nice.

These days everything has to look "utilitarian" in the most retarded way. Like, have you seen the Moser the turkish retard keep spamming in every threads? It has air vents on the side. There's a Calatrava released 2 or 3 years ago with a dial that mimicks carbon fiber. That's what modern design is all about.

You want to look cool? Dress like young Alain Delon.
You want a timeless watch? Get a Datejust or a Tank. It's that simple.

This is the correct answer.
Seiko will always be disappointing.

If you can find a Glycine Airman No.1 Purist, you’ll have the original GMT watch.

If we stay current and avoid a lotof the really weird stuff Omega made in the quartz era (movements that suck to set, modules that age horribly and can't be fixed, weird digital Speedmasters) then I guess the Olympic Chronometer because how the fuck is a three-hander with a basic painted dial costs HOW MUCH?

But ya the 5 digit is nearly perfect visually...
>>
>>18297289
I've owned both and went back to the old-style Explorer.
Like you say, with the looks it's no contest but

>the movement
it's a simple 3-hand no date. It's still chronometer certified. You want the extra power reserve? It takes no time to re-set if it winds down. It's still a 50 hour power reserve anyway. the old school movements are arguably better and more robust. Rolexes were designed to be bulletproof in those days, as opposed to today, when they are designed to be serviced only by Rolex.

>the bracelet
again, the shitty, rattly, hollow bracelet sounds bad on paper, but it's also incredibly comfortable and it's still durable. Old Jubilees wear out, old Oysters really don't. Plus, a 114270 will be at most 20 years old, which is not enough time for the bracelet to wear out unless it's had the shit kicked out of it.

Why do some some watch guys consider Seiko shit-tier? Looks like a pretty accomplished brand if you ask me.

>has been making timepieces since the 1890s
>released the world's first quartz watch, almost deep-sixed the entire Swiss industry
>best known for the Seiko 5, the gold standard for affordable automatics
>provides movements for l*terally hundreds of watch brands
>gateway drug for so many collectors/enthusiasts
>pioneered Zaratsu polishing, an intricate and time-consuming process derived from traditional swordmaking techniques that no h'wite boi brand can replicate
>>
>>18297686
They're just really ugly, wonky and badly made.
You know how Longines or TAG Heuer are often called "mall watches"? Well Seiko is basically a gas station brand.
As for Grand Seiko, they're just an upgrade of a really shitty product. The proportions and design are still ugly as fuck.
>Zaratsu
Ah yes, the ancient art of swordmaking using German machines.
(it's a well established fact "Zaratsu" is derived from the German manufacturer "Sallaz")
>>
>>18297686
Seiko is a classic example of a brand that had a lot of things going right at a lot of different price points, they made something for everyone, they had technical and manufacturing breakthroughs that revolutionized the industry, but in later years they started cutting corners and raising prices while offering little to no improvement on the priducts and it killed what they had going.

The seiko 5s are actually a good example, the modern seiko 5s are reissues of really popular classic budget friendly watches that are double or even triple the cost they originally were and I think the only thing they have that the old ones don't is handwinding and hacking seconds. They still won't be even give you sapphire crystals, it's more important to save a couple bucks per watch.

People who think like this don't understand the dynamics of trends and marketing.
With price increase and control over their production, Rolex is moving towards the high-end luxury segment (10k+).
Tudor on the other hand is becoming the obvious choice for anyone with a 3 to 5k budget who want a good sports watch. Basically what Rolex used to be before the 2010s.

Tudor is doing future classics for the younger generation (Y and Z).
In 20 years nobody will think of Tudor as "poorman Rolex". It will just be Tudor.

tl;dr:
Tudor = Volkswagen
Rolex = Audi
>>

> Mass appeal can only mean one thing : being the lowest common denominator.
> Rolex is, this fact is undeniable, the best known maison today. It is the watch every uneducated consumer aspires to. Understanding this is what begins to separate one from the plebe.
> Rolex, to put it in a way one of its owners would understand, is thinking Olive Garden is fine dining. After all, it is more expensive than Burger King and you may even need to place a reservation beforehand. It is exclusivity in the hands of millions, an elusive presence you will find everywhere. It is everything but exceptionnal, special, it is the status symbol of those who need it. And a man with status does not need a symbol for he has his status and that alone speaks for itself.
> This simple, logical truth will anger the simple mind. "Cope!" he will scream, believing you are jealous of him who owns one of the most common and mundane pieces one could imagine. He is to be dismissed. "You are bitter!" he will cry, unable to even imagine he may not have been correct in his decision to adhere to the glib norm of the unaware. He is to be dismissed.
> Would you give the time of day to a supposed cinéphile who believes himself legitimate after watching a C. Nolan film and "getting it"? To the man who thinks himself a connaisseur of the letters and routinely uses the term " kafkaesque" because he has once read The Metamorphosis (only after skipping the foreword, naturally) ?
> These are lower still than the ignorant masses simply for believing themselves higher. They are to be ignored.
> Rolex is Ronald McDonald in a three piece suit. He tells you that you are lucky : the McRib is available today. The common man believes he is getting an exceptionnal treat. The discerning man may enjoy the sandwich for what it is but will not be fooled into thinking it fine dining.

There's no reason at all in the world for a minimalist 3 hand watch to be over 38mm diameter. I could maybe understand if the dial was really intricate or depicted a scene or something, but it's a cheap looking sunburst shitter dial. It's not even thin. Like, unironically, why does this watch exist? What does it do better than watches in the same price range or even half of its price?

The dial is a cool color. That's it, that's the entire list of things appealing about this watch.

People talk and talk about Rolex, but they are not able to explain in words what they feel about Rolex.
Rolex is like the old Mercedes Benz of the 80s and 90s (Bruno Sacco), when Mercedes made really reliable cars. It was the more conservative option when you have money and want to buy a quality car. Sober design, yes, somewhat boring, it retains its value and lasts a lifetime. And when you stop to look at it more closely you discover that its designs are great in their own way. A somewhat utilitarian luxury, it is not real luxury like a Bentley (AP) or a Rolls (PP), but it has surprising things like an S class.
