With olive or sand pants and a brown leather jacket, you'd at least look like your cosplaying indiana jones, but with black jacket and black pants it looks ridiculous. If you're gonna do a light / dark contrast, you want to "center it". Black with white, dark grey with light gray etc. Basically, if you mix your darkest and lightest color, you want to end up around 50% brightness.Or have all the colors at similar brightness, that works too.
