What are the best down jackets for quality and style? Down is so warm but the jackets are always dumb looking
>>18314652I have this very jacket. Would recommend. Has a nice cut and functionality. Covers the neck nicely, where you loose a lot of heat. Packs down small. The fill power is perfect for me. It may not seem like a lot, but if it had more fill power it would be too hot for me to walk at pace. Its only worth investing in those if you are going to do more stationary activities and need the insulation in colder weather. The microlight is ideal for European climate, everything from +5 to -15 degrees. Wish it had a three way adjustable hood though. But it works well as it is with the two cords on the sides. You will need to keep some kind of emergency rain jacket in you bag at all times which you can layer over it, and protect it during rain though. Otherwise you destroy it. You can pick this one up used on ebay if you keep an eye out for it, but it is also worth the investment imo.
I remember when they were trying to unload these things on massdrop next to the orient open heart watches and fidget spinners. can't say it left a favorable impression

>>18314652>quality>styleyou have to pick a lane for down jackets because a lot of the design features that ultra high performance modern ul ones use make them look fugly. also you want to decide if you want a mid/lightweight down hoodie type jacket or a full on winter jacket. if you want performance get a feathered friends eos. montbell are nice too on the cheaper end. there's other good ones too just some favorites of mine and imo the best buys but sales can affect that.here's some spreadsheets comparing down jackets if you're going for performance:list 1: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ceVWWwGTdc1KcTkIQFWscILPtA2pbgpq0UQQIq1D6gE/edit?usp=sharinglist 2 midweight: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1G4V2EIQ5mWXdPqXsfAVuCcYu380ygr62-AUJIpC3dhY/edit?gid=0#gid=0list 2 winter weight: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1POD9G2hYC7wOqJfr6XFEqbn8haCr8jOxAAwudggkP2I/edit?gid=0#gid=0important things: weight, cost, fill power + fill weightimportant to know: 950fp is the max down can be. anything higher than 950 is waterproof treated down. this stuff will be warmer but less breathable and won't last as many washes. i like 950fp untreated the best personally and i live in one of the rainiest places on earth.if you want looks my faves are stone island, rocky mountain featherbed and rick owens. mrporter has nice shit and a lot of options with cotton shells (lower performance, nicer looking and nicer to wear)if you want kinda a middle ground the best you'll get are hunting brands like kuiu and nunatak and shit.
oh i should have said a lot of my post is basically only relevant to americans. especially the performance recs. europeans have totally different brands/market for those ones. a lot of the stuff in my post are made by tiny 1-10 man cottage brands with no international presence. some of the stuff is relevant to europs though, like the designer brands and japanese brands.
>>18314783the thing with down jackets is the specs and design are everything. if you don't know the difference between box baffles and sewn-through it all looks the same. and you can't really tell just looking at the jacket how much feathers or how high of quality of feathers are in it. you can have like $2 or $75 of feathers in there and it all looks the same but performs massively different. also the super thin nylon face materials on the high performance jackets don't come cheap either they're pretty expensive per yard i make my own sleeping bags and shit.

>>18314796I'd get one but the northeast US doesn't get cold enough
>>18314808consider a midweight ul down hoodie type one they kinda own as a fall and moderate winter layering piece. like a hoodie you can pack into the size of a pair of boot socks. not the most aesthetic unless you're into techwear/gorp type shit but just really convenient.
>>18314803so are they good or not?
>non-down optionsclimashield apex's the best last time i bothered checking. its cheaper for how well it performs compared to 950fp down and it fares better in wet humid not quite freezing conditions like pnw type weather. if you get it wet out in the woods you can actually dry it out somewhat. >help i tore/burned a hole in my down jacketgear aid brand tenacious tape. comes in a lot of colors. cut and stick on. you can do it with a pocket knife in the field. adhesive will last decades of repeated washings i don't know what wizardry they use.>>18314813looks like they actually sold pretty decent down jackets on there. rab is one of the better mass market brands.
>>18314804>>18314803What do the pictures mean?
>>18314797>Faux furYikes
>>18314818first pic - baffles are what stop all the down in your jacket from sinking down to the bottom of the jacket. there's two ways to sew them. the cheap way there will be cold spots between the baffles, the more labor intensive way will not have cold spots between.second pic - look at the tubes. they all have 1oz of down in them. the higher quality stuff lofts more making it both warmer, and compress smaller. i'll post an explanation of fill power vs fill weight after this, char limit.
15min nigger>>18314830wrong.>Collar: Sheep Moutonthe only thing you can say that's bad about rocky mountain featherbed is they could use higher quality fill.>>18314818https://triplefatgoose.com/blogs/down-time/a-guide-to-down-jacket-warmth-down-fill-power-vs-down-weight>What is fill power?>Fill power measures the loft of a down product, which is essentially the quality of the down. Maximum loft occurs when the down clusters are fully expanded. The fill power rating value is calculated by measuring how many cubic inches an ounce of down creates at its maximum loft. A down fill rating of 600, for example, means that one ounce of down can cover 600 cubic inches. The process involves putting the down into a Plexiglas cylinder and slightly compressing it with a weight.>It’s important to note that fill power is measured differently in the United States than it is in Europe due to the different types of cylinders that are used. In the U.S., the cylinder has a diameter of 241 millimeters and weights around 68.3 grams. In Europe, the cylinder is larger at 289 millimeters and weighs more at 94.25 grams. What is fill weight?>While fill power is a measure of volume, fill weight is a measure of—you guessed it—weight. Fill power rates quality, and fill weight signals quantity. If a jacket has a down weight of 12 ounces, that means that 12 ounces of down material was used to make it. While many outerwear brands proudly draw attention to their high fill power, they often fail to mention the fill weight. This is extremely important, however, as down weight also plays an equal part in determining the product’s warmth and shouldn’t be overlooked by consumers.>[...]the fill weight is what determines how soft or firm a product is. It is also what determines how well the product compresses. Like we mentioned above, a great feature of down is its ability to be stuffed into a backpack without taking on damage. The heavier a down jacket is, the less it will be able to compress.
I got a pre-owned down jacket from a sports brand I never had any quality issues with but it doesn't keep me warm even above zero degrees. Has this jacket been washed too hard or could a outlier in quality be this bad?
>>18314652Down is warm and lightweight. mine is helly hansen in the square quilt instead of diamond
>>18314908assuming its not a quality/skimping on the fill issue (what jacket is it?)there's like two main categories for down jackets. some are made for more fall type weather, they're thinner, wearable in a wider range of temps and more packable. and some are meant for winter and they'll keep you warm as shit but it has to be pretty cold to throw it on. if you have the kind meant for fall and want to wear it in winter just layer under it. skin tight wool long sleeve baselayer shirt and a fleece underneath should bump those types of jackets down to 0*f or even colder depending on activity level. the jacket's fill can also lose loft over time. if its been stored compressed for long periods of time etc its quite possible. properly cared for it can last a very long time. does it lack poofiness? or it may just be in need of washing. if the down is dirty/oily its not going to perform so well. look up how to wash down jackets properly and get the right detergent before doing it. have a bunch of towels ready to dry it with. i would start here with a used jacket.
>>18314918HH brotheri have a lil collection of 1970's helly hansen stuff going on boomers keep giving it to me for free. i have some made in norway pvc chest waders that were stored impeccably with no peeling.

>>18315512i would personally layer a wool sweater under it. but if you want down something like a vintage eddie bauer skyliner would probably look nice under it. i say vintage because the modern ones may be too long in the torso.
>>18315512or something like the m65 liner jacket. there's a lot of modern takes on it look for something short enough in the torso.

>>18316492its a button in liner for a jacket.and yeah they were very trendy in menswear and streetwear circles a while ago and they're seeing a bit of a revival because of how trendy shit like the vietnam war pants are rn. most of your typical go to high end casual menswear brands make a reproduction of it if you don't want a crusty old surplus one.
