For the longest time I've been into and looked for fragrances that I felt were realistic, that were able to faithfully reproduce the scent of something, like, say, Ichnusa with fig leaf, Cardinal with churchy incense, Light Blue Forever with grapefruit, and this is obviously also because of the natural = good / synthetic = bad heuristic, people saying "it smells fake/chemical/unnatural" as a way of saying they didn't like a frag, but at some point I realized they were only one of the many options.

So, what do you think are the best fake, otherworldly, unnatural, odd frags?
Things that you can't quite place and that don't smell like anything you might find outside of perfumery, like Ganymede, BR540, Secretions Magnifiques and the likes.

Got samples of Ganymede, Bois Imperial, and Eau Sauvage Parfum this week.

The samples I bought came with a bonus sample of Tom Ford Mandarino di Amalfi.
This is really nice for a summer party, or just summer in general.
Although the first half a second of the first sniff can be a bit "toilet freshener"-y. Or if you smell it through the cap.

It's like wearing a Citrus Fresh Spicy and a White Floral Musk at the same time. As if I sprayed both Eau Sauvage and Kiehl's Original Musk together.

Yeah, doesn't have lots of incense, mainly wood, it son dries down into something very powdery without any incense at all and just a bit of wood, and performances are overall terrible on me, same as anything Dyptique I've tried.
For woody churchy incense I recommend Bois d'Encens, or Ébène Fumé if you want more wood compared to the incense.
Or a clone like Artisan Arabian Incense, which is woody incense but not that church-y, or Ebony Fumé which is pretty much Ébène Fumé with a tad more incense.

It depends on what sort of frags you like.
To figure that out, your best bet is going to a store where you can try out frags and trying out a lot, keeping track of what bottles you like and don't like, that way when you come home you can look up their olfactory families and the notes that make them up.

Just got Fahrenheit EdT.
Opening is kind of annoying, honestly. The cedar/lemon/chamomile combo ends up smelling super synthetic, like bug spray, and the inside of a cloth-seated car sitting in the sun on a hot day.
We'll see how the dry down is, but kinda disappointed after hearing about how solid it is.

yes. castoreum isn't even unethical to acquire these days. hell, it's used as food flavoring. you can easily buy castoreum tinctures online. i recommend getting a small bottle, really good stuff. deer musk is a whole different story, much harder to acquire and the amount of fragrances that use it at non-homeopathic levels is low.

Newer batches of Fahrenheit, though, are definitely un-leaded, so to speak. Starting in about 2013, the gasoline started to get toned down. When the parfum version was released a few years ago, the EdT started to get a little of the gasoline back.

I'm not trying to be inflammatory, but ever since I was little my impression of fragrances has been pretty negative. I only ever remember smelling it strongly off of people that were unattractive, trashy, dressed poorly, and seemed generally tasteless. I'm trying it for myself now and I feel like the right amount of fragrance is an amount that people can't actually smell, at least if they aren't within three feet of you.
