How would you make it work so that it doesn't come off as LARPy?
>>18355386You don't, unless you're living in an area that matches it.
>>18355394>unless you're living in an area that matches it.such as?
>>18355386> How would you make it work so that it doesn't come off as LARPy?Easy, leave the hat out
>>18355409exactly. the rest of the outfit is fine if you're 30+. Indiana was 37 in Raidersthe hat is the only thing that really dates it and makes it costumey
Where's a place that has more of the double breated flap shirts like I imagine Indy would wear? All the places I know do more oxford style single pocket which feels more prep and less rugged than I'm looking for
>>18355418Probably work shirts and surplus stuff, they tend to have that dual pocket look. Considering all the shit Indy does, he wouldn't be wearing a nice dress shirt but something more rugged that can take punishment.
>>18355386Break in the clothing. Especially with the leather jacket, a new jacket that has no scratches and hasn't molded to your body yet will always make you look like a larper.Only wear the hat when it's needed. In other words, while outdoors in somewhat cold weather (in hot weather, wear a panama hat instead if you want to keep the look). I'd also opt for a hat that's less tall, with a less pronounced crease. You want it to look like you picked it fr it's utility, not it's looks.Don't wear the double belt. With a long revolver, it's needed to bring the gun below your hip joint, but nobody carries those outside of hunting or larping. For a snubby or a subcompact semi, you can just use the same belt that holds your pants up.t. actually dresses somewhat similar and constantly gets told it "makes me look older", but never that it looks like larping, playing cowboy or anything like that
>>18355386You'd think according to some posters on this board that the rise of his pants should be way higher.
The hat is specific to a period and culture, like asking how to wear a fez or bowler without looking larpy. You either have to be quite old, or live in an appropriate culture—Peru, for instance. If you’re young and in the west dressing like this, might as well go all the way and dress like the man with no name and tell everyone to call you Bronco
>>18355418That style is called a safari shirt
>>18355394this, not even indiana jones dressed like that all the time
>>18355409Why the hell does this board hate hats so much? Forgive me if I don't want my head to look like a leathery 60yo mess by the time I'm 35-40.
>>18355386>>18355814i was watching these movies recently and goddamn harrison has a good head of hair
>>18356635The board seems to be a hivemind of mine I guess. Hats give me anxiety. I don't post negative comments here ever though, I just ask for advice and don't read negativity. Whenever people complain about negativity here I find it eerie how much the opinions they dislike are like mine (I've had them longer than the board has existed though).
>>18355404Hot/tropical weather climates.
>>18356635fa is not a person. I for example like hats and use them a lot, but not every hat looks good, and not every hat goes with every outfit. And some hats, like that excessively high hat in OPs pictures, will just never look good. Though a similar style with around 2/3 the height could look great.
>>18356654Hats look silly if you look young. They can look very daper if you look middle aged or above. I think nearly all fashion hate isn't about the piece itself but how it makes people look. Many things only few can pull off. It is important to dress to your own strengths, not other people's.
>>18356637He still has good hair considering he's in his 80s now
Copy the main guy in the new Jurassic Park movies
>>18355386Indy's look is that of a 1930s cargo pilot. Unless you are a cargo pilot in the 1930s, you are going to look very larpy.
>>18355386literally just take off the hat and it looks fine.
>>18355386>wearing leather jacket in the tropicsHow does he do it?
>>18358215It was necessary to establish his character from the get-go. the audience needed to see him in the classic costume so they knew, this was a badass, this guy was a serious adventurer, this guy fucks. and nothing does that better than a leather jacketso when it was juxtaposed by him in his professor outfit shortly after, it was especially powerful in showing off who this character isbasically it's a film device needed to establish who indy was and what's he's all about, not as an actual realistic outfit he'd wear in a jungle
>>18357309Post more 1930s cargo pilot inspo
All elements of your wardrobe should be part of the history or be inspired in its modern elements by western wear. From shirts, patterns, buckles, jewelry fabrics, cuts, materials.
The outfit for Indiana Jones was directly taken from Alan Ladd's outfit he wore in China
As well as Charlton Heston's character in Secret of the Incas
>>18355386you can't. this ONLY worked because harrison ford was attractive, 6'1" and looked rugged as hellif you aren't, it won't work
>>18355386you're just going to look like Adam Savage
>>18359225>>18359223how come these can't pull it off>>18358718>>18358720but they can?
>>18355386I am assuming that you will regularly be foregoing the whip and the pistol belt and holster. You could own every single piece he wears in the movies, but be mindful of your contexts when you decide to wear them, such as the weather and the company you are joining with for a moment. The shirt and trousers, even with the satchel, would not look too unusual, and Indiana Jones' Alden shoes or low boots look quite nice, for both a classic workwear appearance and a day at the office wearing a more business-like dress code. The leather jacket could even be added, as could the black tie he is sometimes seen wearing in the movies. However, the hat will really give many people nearby the specific impression of Indiana Jones or some other adventurer, more than 1930s-inspired workwear clothing in general. You could still wear that exact hat, but many people may be thrown off of the Indiana Jones impression if you wear one in a different colour or style, such as a beige or black cowboy hat. Put a western hat on, and suddenly, you aren't seen as Indiana Jones as widely as before. Wearing a different hat shape or colour could definitely be viable to appear more stylish without such a strong Indiana Jones association, and it may also help to wear a different jacket. Another note, try to wear a straw hat more often during the summer season and hot weather otherwise, your head will thank you, and people around you will see that your look is more understandable than wearing a fur felt or wool felt hat during the blazing heat. Wear that same hat if you want to, but just realise that it will definitely be associated with Indiana Jones to many if not most people. If you don't mind peoples' comparisons, negative or positive, carry on.
>>18359226pre ww2 vs post ww2 setting. also the quality of manufacture, fit, and styling are completely different and actors are almost always dressed and prepped by a professional team, posed for 1000 photos, touched up and use flattering angles, especially when they dont look like it.
