barefoot shoes are expensive partly because they're niche sporting equipment and people will pay for that, but also in part because they are using expensive materials that can last a year while also letting you feel the ground as though barefoot. it's not exactly easy.the whole trend was kicked off by a 2009 book about mexican tribes running ultramarathons in the desert for fun.of note is that they often run barefoot, but when they do wear shoes it is a simple sandal made from a leather thong and a slab of rubber cut from an old tire, because they're poor tribespeople living in the mexican desert.tl;dr cut a slab of rubber out of an old tire and tie it to your foot.
