for me, it's Thursday boots
Just want a pair of 10 or 11 eye derby boots that won't shit the bed but the only obvious options I can find are either Gripfasts which are made by Solovair or Grinders which are an even more poverty version of the former.Everyone's glad to shit on Solovair now so what's the alternative for an actual old Doc Marten style boot? Or are all no-nonsense boots just dead and I have to buy the brown leather super tactical hiker heritage trailmix whateverthefucks now?
>>18539671post the pair pls
>>18539731The answer to this question is always milsurp.
>>18539758That's a fair point, it's a classic move I just automatically assumed all milsurp would be sand coloured now and never bothered to check. If there isn't anything in my size, worst case scenario I guess I could get the Gripfasts in greasy and pray that the split sole shit is just overrepresented (huff several tanks of copium).
>>18539779I think people abroad buy greek army boots for quite cheap, but not sure where you should buy from to get the ones that are standard issue. The ones that the army issues to you are indestructible, and they end up quite comfy after you wear them all day for a few months.
>>18539794I'm in the UK and while I get your point, the fact there's a market for military boots kind of implies that many aren't entirely satisfied with their issued boots. That being said the 10 eye docs from the 80s specifically are what I'm looking for but all I can find are the 8 eye boots which aren't innately bad but tend to skew towards the gimped little hiking lumberjack larper audience. I guess I'm just attached to the old look despite the fact everything is more shit forever besides buying a pair of boots that I don't actually like the look of that costs half as much as my monthly rent. Most of the milsurp stuff I'm seeing is 8 eyes too, I'll just have to think about it.
>>18539806>the fact there's a market for military boots kind of implies that many aren't entirely satisfied with their issued boots.Do you not know what military surplus sales are? The military buys boots in huge amounts and change models from time to time. When they change models they don't just use up all the old model boots they have in storage, they just sell them.
From last thread:Trying to figure out how to give maintenance to these boots I wore through winter last year ahead of the cold weather. Also looking to see if the same routine would apply to suede boots. An anon recommended using a 60/40 water detergent with a cloth and then using Obernauf LP plus a horsehair brush.Another anon brought up these have Gore-Tex, does the Gore-Tex mean it needs any special care or different product?
>>18539884gore tex is just the liner there's not much to care for
>>18539884>Also looking to see if the same routine would apply to suede boots.no, suede wants waterproofing spraysleather is fine with just wax
>>18539895What about Nikwax instead of Obernauf LP? That one advertises that it's recommended for Gore-Tex leather footwear. Is it just a marketing scam to keep me away from the good stuff?
>>18539880No I mean that there's options to buy new boots, there are retailers that offer a wide variety of tactical boots and work boots aimed at soldiers in case they want something better than their issued boots.Granted I do get your point, though that's also why I brought up the fact I'd expect after however many years of war in sandy countries that the surplus would all be desert colours now.
>>18539678Copped these used for 70€, Sequoyah, handmade in Italy
>>18539937yes, you showed them last threadnice cop for 70yuros but shit cop since they have 2(two!) fag straps each
>>18539779Update on this:Cocoran surplus boots are still up for sale and they fit more or less what I was looking for, my only concern is that it actually seems too good to be true. I didn't see any knockoffs on ALiExpress so I guess it's okay, I'll weight it up against my other options and I might just have to pray that the sizing is right but it's good to see that practical and simple boots can still be cheap.
>>18539937I promise I'm not shitposting. What do you wear with these? They look very feminine to my eye, but I'm sure that could change when seen worn.
>>18539964Update on this update: Apparently the Corcorans you can get nowadays are all the parade boot model that are issued to US paratroopers but have a thick external coating to make sure that they remain shiny which is the exact same issue as the high shine Solovairs. The actual vintage Corcorans are nowhere to be seen. This has been a load of shit and ignorance was frankly preferable.
What's in the box?
I want some red wing blacksmiths in copper, is this btg approved?
>>18540021Perfectly acceptable babby's first proper boot. I think they look better than IRs.
>>18539920that sounds like advertising shit cause the conditioner would not penetrate THROUGH the upper leather and into the gore tex liner unless you're really saturating that shit then that'll just cause other problems later down the line. what does nigwax advertising claim it does?
>>18540001something exclusive for the euro/jap market
>>18539995Can't you just remove the coating? If that isn't feasible, you may be able to find something similar if you search for Bata jump boots.
>>18539731>no-nonsense boots>Doc Marten
>>18540001we have to wait until 2145 for the product reveal? fucking gay, I'll be 153 years old
>>18539884Gore Tex is a waterproof membrane, keeps water out while letting sweat evaporate out. If you use oil based conditioners it can eventually go through and potentially clog up or damage the properties of the gore tex. Is it likely to happen? I don't know. That's why you're supposed to use wax which doesn't penetrate the leather, but creates a water resistant barrier. That also means the leather isn't breathing and letting out moisture.Gore Tex is retarded in full leather boots since you're supposed to wax and condition them any way. It's basically marketing for people who doesn't know better. They're a cheap fashion boot, enjoy them while they last, there's no point in going out of your way with 'elaborate' maintenance. Just apply some wax.
>>18540345Worth noting that goretex and every breathable and waterproof membrane will eventually disintegrate in confetti.
>>18540001garbage
>>18540314in the 80s they were just a pair of practical boots you could get for roughly £60 if we account for inflationgranted that was 45 years ago but there was a good chunk of time between now and then where they were practical boots

>>18540666My only gripe with solovair is that their soles feel unstable as fuck once they’re worn down; I’ve injured my ankles more times with a pair of their shoes than with my Tricker’s that exhibit the same wear pattern (I’ve hiked in them with zero issues).

Why do so many used shoes have this disgusting swollen look, as if the owner inflated balloons inside of them? It's very frequent with loafers, but you can also spot it on boots.
Thoughts on Rider Boot Co?
>>18540837name of that boot?
>>18540896they're not bloatedthe natural crease sits lower than the rest of the toe area
>>18540952That’s not my point. I asked what’s up with the fact that most worn shoes do look bloated.
>>18540958the leather can stretchthe feet get bigger as the day goes on and as they are used I think you can connect the two
>>18540505They were always gimmicky boots, the air sole was their big selling point and for the longest time their unique looks (chunky sole, yellow stitching) has been in with weird people. I cannot fathom how someone would try to conjure the most generic boot possible in their mind and a Doc Marten's is what they come up with. If you want the most "it's a boot, that's it" boot ever, it's the service boot, so generic that basically every bootmaker makes one and they all look 99% the same.

>>18541201For a good cobbler yes.
>>18540837think o fit like a car. if you bought a porsche 911 you wouldnt treat it like shit and youd do oil changes etc.
>>18541201Many such cases!

>>18541344Only problem with factory resoles is that they always replace the welt and they attach the new welt with a machine. Which is why their homepages usually say that you can do like 3 resoles on a pair of boots. Which I didn't understand why at first until I understood they replace the welt and therefore make new holes in the upper when they attach the new one.But then again most people won't even go through 3 resoles in their life so it doesn't really matter lel

These are my second pair of chink boots. I still would have preferred Horween roughout for the proper boondocker look, but the reverse kudu is great. It's like wearing an actual glove on my feet. I had to put a shoe tree in just to prop it up, since it's completely unlined.

IRs (really RW's entire heritage line) occupy this weird niche of being better than Thursday, but not as good as an actual good quality boot. Always lacking something.
>>18542071p sure there's a guy with pairs of G&G here

>>18542022
>>18542070>mto is when they alter an existing last to try to fit your feet as close as possibleMTO generally means custom configuration of leathers and soles etc. often including existing lasts. A few companies like Carmina offer their 3D scanning bespoke service which, as I understand, alter existing lasts to fit the 3D scan.
>>18542946Alteration of lasts is also MTO, with true bespoke the lasts must be made for your foot not just altered for your foot.
>>18542230It's not so much about big feet, but rather having a narrow width relative to the length in combination with a small instep. The shape of the bump toe and not using shoe trees exacerbates the clown shoe appearance.

I use the insert in my 2340 and it is still a bit roomier than the 1910. I would consider that 10.5 AU classic to be a perfect fit. And other shoes I consider a perfect fit are the Reebok Club C Vintage in 12 US, Adidas Spezial in 11.5 US. I'm looking to buy some boots as we come into winter here. I've become keen on retro/80's style fashion ,with light blue jeans, or loose pleated pants, shirts, brown tones etc. Here is an idea of one outfit I want to have boots to adapt to. the sneakers work well but not when the weather gets wet.chatgpt says brown chukkas are the way to go. I'm on a budget so trying to find a good pair on Vinted.
>>18546627Chukkas would be way to slim for that kind of fit. ChatGPT is pulling from reddit 10 years ago where everyone got recommend chukkas as the first shoe to get after sneakers. Would recommend some kind of moc toe like Redwing 875s or Throrogood. If you don't like the look of a moc toe or don't want a wedge sole you could get some basic lugged boots like the Origin Coronado. You should be able to find used pairs for pretty cheap.

>>18546062>Are the soles durable? Seen lots of blundstones on secondhand sites with pretty good uppers but absolutely busted soles.Absolutely not. They cheaped out on the rubber compound and the soles suffer through PU hydrolysis really quickly if you don't wear them regularly. I bought a pair of used Blundstones that lookd pretty much brand new but after a couple of weeks the soles totally disintegrated. Thankfully I wasn't far from home when bits of rubber came flying off with every step. Descriptors like "as new, barely worn" are major red flags if you're risky enough to buy used Blundstones. I used to have a soft spot for the brand because I found them supremely comfortable despite the dogshit quality, but nowadays I think you can make pretty much any kind of boots comfortable with the right insoles.

Is Red Wing QA supposed to be good? Because these Blacksmiths are full of sloppa. One boot noticeably darker. Tongues are different. Left/Right fitment is different.
>>18548691bump. im also looking for a pair of lace up boots. i keep reading that Docs have gone to shit.im looking at Red Wings and Thursday boots. im getting conflicting messages about Thursday. some say the quality is great, while other say it's shit.

I love my Red Wings but I rarely pick them over my Whites or Aldens.I really want a pair of the Moc Toes though, as I've never owned a pair of mocs before I tried them on in a store and they're narrow as fuck though. Not sure how to approach sizing as the place I went to only had D sizes
>>18548779Didn't Whites make the perry select at about the same price than red wing but better quality?
>>18548881How do you size it? Same as the MP? Because if that's the case I'll check it out
>>18548969I don't know, but someone in this general had them.
>>18548773>i keep reading that Docs have gone to shit.Just do Solovair instead of Doc, even though there are pretentious contrarians that decry Solovair in recent times.
>>18549077Interesting. Half down in MPs is spot on for me. If the Perrys are the same I'll get them because the RW mocs are fucking me up. Half down is too narrow, down and full size and up a width is too risky without sizing in store, and it's too complicated
Should I get a Parkhurst Niagara instead of an Alden Indy? Lower cost is a nice advantage, but I'm more concerned with which one is the better boot overall in this style. If the Alden really is the best I'll just wait a bit longer to snag that.
>>18549198yes
>>18548328i don't care what came first or whatever. the beckman on the 8 last was perfect
>>18549198>instead of an Alden Indy?the rule at this point is do not overpay for shitty indys unless you absolutely must have the truebalance last and the exact indy design. for many (me included) it's worth iti love my indys, the truebalance last is perfect for me because i have wider toes and a narrow heel, so the fit is great. but the price to quality is badalso they were 575 when i got mine and that was already hella overpriced. they're 700 now which is clown world prices
>>18548691>Is Red Wing QA supposed to be good? Maybe at some point in the past. These days QC is just pushing anything boot-shaped.>One boot noticeably darker. I know this is /boot general/, not /shoes general/, but does anyone have a good rec for some casual leather shoes? I bought some Clark's used but they are wearing out and aren't really worth repairing. I hate wearing sneakers or tennis shoes outside of sports, but I don't want something super fancy that I can't wear with jeans without looking weird. I already have some white's boots, but sometimes lower shoes are nice.
One of my favorite traits about my Whites is that they are entirely leather. Are there dressier shoes like derbies or oxfords that also made this way?
>>18549122I have them in the Tobacco Stampede leather. I don't have MPs but went a half size down from brannock and they're a good fit. 9.5EE and I have 9EE. On the semi-annual sale they were actually cheaper than the RW mocs, but they do have and are designed around the removable insole if you don't want that.

I'm getting into loose jeans or suit pants/ old money vibe. Here are two options of different style I've found. What do you think
>>18551891Lace up boots are more versatile than low cowbous and chelseas. However it seems that lately chelseas and low pull on boots are the new meta, if instagram is to be trusted. It depends mostly on what's your style and what fits do you usually wear.
If I mainly wear black and grey jeans, would a pair of light-mid brown chelseas clash too hard? Do I just play it safe and go for black?
letting customers pick their own mixed materials is a bad idea
>>18552186Reminds me of the guitar brand Kiesel. Guitar bros will know what I'm talking about.
