Reminder that the EU, not the IFRA, is poised to nuke the fragrance industry with their blanket bans and restrictions in 2027The entire point of the IFRA was to make an attempt to self-regulate to prevent government overreach like this in the 1st place. They were the good guys

Replying to the two users from the previous thread. I believe there to be very few fragrances that completely capture the smell of tobacco, but there are a few fragrances that to my nose have very interesting tobacco accords. I personally have developed what I believe to be one of the better smelling tobacco accords found in modern perfumery, it skews aromatic, like a good pipe tobacco or a nice unlit cigar. Commercially speaking I believe Tabac 28 by La Labo to be a very good option for a dryer Virginia leaning tobacco, alternatively if you are interested in the more commonly found sweet tobacco profile you might have encountered with the aforementioned tobacco vanille, I would instruct you to instead purchase Herod by Parfums de marly. As I mentioned in another thread I don’t believe it to be an exceptional fragrance, as the tobacco accord found within is relatively rudimentary, but for your purposes, it should be more than enough. Replying to the second user in regard to the recent cosmetic law changes, I have to say that it is hardly surprising that certain compounds are being prohibited. Many chemical concerns have relatively thin margins, close to those of large shipyards in south east Asia. The largest profits stem from captive molecules, which are used to great effect in many high end fine fragrances. They generate profit because most companies cannot access them, and seeing as the market relies more and more on synthetic molecules, it can become a mark of distinction, as those captive molecules tend to be high impact. A perfect example for this is the more diffusive and powerful version of Hedione, which is being utilized to great effect in creeds Aventus. By removing the access to natural ingredients a huge share of the market previously inaccessible opens up, thereby driving up revenue for synthetic alternatives to naturals, such as the aforementioned Bergamote 000136 or alternatively synthetic lavender replacers.

>>18554904After having smelled several hundred fragrances, I've come to feel that way. They don't smell better. It's the same useful idiots in some kind of identity crisis combined with an inferiority complex that falls for the marketing around wine, fragrances, watches. Some obscure and hard to pronounce ingredient from an obscure place. The former director of IWC said, quite literally on stage in front of a crowd of watch journalists, that luxury watches are useless and nonsensical. Just think about that. The balls of him and the brainwash of the consumer when you can go on stage and say it like it is to the masses, that they're being ripped off and still, still make business. Humans are fascinating speciemen.

>>18554944ELDO discovery set
>>18554923Niche smells somewhat better on average up close. Having said that, I find it hard to justify spending more than $200 on a fragrance. There is something about it that rubs me the wrong way. It's just a scent. There are animal shelters that could have better use of that money. Why would I as a man spend it on a scent instead of helping cats and dogs that genuinely suffer? 1 bottle is awful as it is, but having several bottles? I would not feel good about it, to be quite honest with you guys. I just know deep down on some level that it isn't the right way to go about things. It just isn't.
>>18554950>buying fragrances>helping animal sheltersi do both of these thingsmaybe you should stop being poor

When you guys recommend BDC, do you mean the EDT, EDP, Parfum or (highly doubt it) Exclusif?I used to own the EDP a long time ago and I thought it kinda turned sour or unpleasant in hot weather but maybe I should try it again
>>18554955Why do you equate a disregard for consumerism as poverty? You're the one who's poor, but you're probably not even cognitively capable enough to understand what I mean by it.
>>18554960nice copedo you help animal shelters, anon?
>>18554958Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum are my personal favorites. They're excellent scents that upset asocial manchilds with a need to feel unique and different. Forget about the noise here, and visit an authorized retailer and spray 2-3 times on your skin. You'll love it, and you won't look back.
OK so I've narrowed down my choices to either Essential Parfums discovery set OR ELDO discovery set. What are the pros and cons of each and should I pay directly with the debit card on their site?
>>18554923Im saying the niche vs designer distinction is meaningless is every possible way. I agree luxury branding is a scam and try to study perfumes based on composition first, followed by cultural impact, and only really take branding and presentation into account if its something done uniquely for the bottle or box to enhance the imagery of the composition (like the Greek styling of Kouros). >>18554958I have tried the EDT and EDP the most and ended up getting a bottle of the EDP. I found the parfum to be too heavy and the EDP has a nicer balance of richness and sparkle.
>>18554963I do, although I don't volunteer often. You have no arguments and you sound like an unbelievably stupid human being and I'm not even trying to insult you. You find comfort in the high of acquiring expensive fragrances and telling yourself this story that you're superior with excellent taste. Anon, with the most sincere respect I can muster right now, you're a loser. You're poor in soul and common sense. Like someone else said: touch grass
>>18554964>>18554966Yeah I don't pay attention to most of the autism on here. I've tried hundreds of scents and wasted money on many niche samples and at this point I just want something I can wear anywhere, anytime and that I know will be liked by everyone yet won't bore meIt's a tossup between the various blue scents currently on the market
>>18554971I've spent so much money on fragrances that I'm actually embarrassed to admit the total. I'm going to trim it down to 4-5.

At this point even people who know nothing about fragrances peddle the "Sauvage is overplayed" meme. So we're getting to the point where it's becoming less common in large cities.>>18555137>>18555141Is it true that reformulations killed fierce?I tried the Zara clone and it was very mediocre. Just finished my bottle of Pour un Homme. Should I repurchase or buy something else? It really does have the best lavender note. Is there anything with a similar lavender note?
>>18555146early 2000's a&f always did try to target an older audience when in reality it was just high schoolers who wanted to be perceived as mature. Fierce is just an incredibly masculine profile and I'm sure it stands out today as such when you typically have some men wearing sweeter or floral frags instead>>18555150>Is it true that reformulations killed fierce?I have no idea really. The company has changed ownership at least once so I wouldnt be surprised. I wore my mid 2000s bottle the other week just for fun and it was really gross until the drydown. not sure if thats from it going unused for over a decade or what
>>18555150>>18555153>FierceExcellent longevity on current batches. Can smell it on my clothes 48 hours after applying.
>>18555151I find Le Male EDT does the vanilla/lavender profile in a much better way, personally. I find the lavender in PUH to be a more sleepy aromatherapy type of lavender, while the lavender in Le Male is more crisp and fresh. The mint in the top and musk in the base of Le Male makes it a very very different fragrance from PUH but the lavender/vanilla heart is still there and might appeal to you for that.
I wore Replica Autumn Vibes today (my gf got it for me as a gift and we went to a farm market). I'm shocked at how long lasting it is, I can still smell it on the back of my hand 10 hours later. It's a very unique and interesting profile too, really does what it says on the tin. The notes combine in such a way that it reminds me of the scent of fallen leaves on wet pavement.

This scenario should be a Chanel ad:Before buying Antaeus, I was at the store to pour it on me and I actually couldn't find the bottle easily because it was obscured by a wall and also other stuff and then this bitch who wanted to buy bleu for a dude she knew was there to try it talking to the saleswoman and then I heard her say "no this is the only one I'm interested because I know he likes it." and as soon as I heard that I happened to find the bottle of Antaeus so when the bitch was in front of me I reached and picked up the bottle from the back of the bitch and sprayed it 8 times and maybe I proved to her that her fuckboy doesn't know shit about perfumery.Bleu is shite. Just because you know something it doesn't mean it's good. Allure and Bleu are basically Tommy Hilfiger with better longevity. But let's face it, the most longevous perfumes are not really noticeable past the 2nd hour anyway. Just buy Tommy Hilfiger if you like this kinda stuff. Don't you see the pattern? Polo Sport was blue and then Tommy came out which is exactly what we call a blue fragrance today and then shite blue for women came out and then Polo Blue and then they got the creator of the first "blue fragrance" to make shite blue for men and only then Chanel went blue.... this is basically Tommy Hilfiger. Antaeus is definitely Polge's take on Aramis but it makes Aramis million times better whereas this is just an unoriginal weak mainstream release which was made when he was too old and didn't give a fuck. Even the bottle is tacky. Shite blue has a better bottle.
wtf antaeus is nothing like aramis
>>18555506Taking fragrance advice online is ridiculous in the first place, whether it be from influencers or anons. You have to go and place yourself on the ground and do the testing for yourself. i.e. Anyone who's spent time in a fragrance store knows that Bleu de Chanel is a phenomenal fragrance. Jacques Polge just got it right and it's upsetting to people. I've smelled niche stuff that costs several hundres of dollars and they make you gasp in disbelief (because who the actual fuck is buying this stuff). Of course, there exist a lot of other wonderful fragrances from both niche and designer. But the whole idea that niche = better than designer or good by default is just utter nonsense. I got a bottle of Gucci Pour Homme 2003. It's hard for me to describe each note since it smells mostly linear with subtle changes. It starts off very woody with that grainy and dry papyrus note. It's the core of the fragrance and lasts and projects very well. The woodiness is not sharp or harsh but like aged wooden furniture. I tried it on while cataloging my small collection of perfumes last night and it really gave a beautiful image of an archivist in an old library going through old manuscripts. It has a really nice old book and scholarly setting scent. It's more related to Gucci Envy than any of its siblings but not too similar since it gets rid of most of the ginger, dials up the woodiness, turns down the sweetness, and brings in the papyrus. It also has a bit of that vanilla, tonka, amber base from stuff like Escada PH, but again much less sweet. Gucci PH still has a bit of sweetness but nothing overbearing like Envy or others.I need to try Bentley for Men Absolute to see if it's truly similar.
Anybody ever try "Oud Silk Mood" from Maison Francis Kurkdjian? Worth a sample?

Crazy how tastes change. I used to be all into fresh fragrances but now I like darker stronger sweeter stuff like side effect. I've always hated and will continue to hate aquas. That will never change
>>18556221I also got a bottle of Crabtree and Evelyn Extract of Mysore Sandalwood. It starts off nice with a bit of clean florals, a very realistic fresh cut wood, and some fecal notes, all good things right? Unfortunately in the end it settles into what I can only describe as church lady on a hot day because of the sharp woody notes. If I can disassociate from that, and I think there is a chance of that, then maybe I can wear it. Otherwise it might not be for me, unless it's one of those days I really want to offend those around me. It's actually quite a nice scent with realistic woodiness but the association is so strong. I mainly got it because someone mentioned sandalwood along with patchouli as some of the natural notes that might last longest before they degrade and I think it might be true. They both smell very fresh, the patchouli starts strong but doesn't last, and while sandalwood starts more subtly it has a sharp persistence.
Btw i found out I really really like sandalwood. Santal 33 is so close to being enjoyable but I can't get past pickle. Any good similar sandals?

French Lover vs Sycomore? Has anyone compared them? Are they similar?
>>18556592fl is horribly bitter, sycomore is a ho-hum vetiver. both are impressive to indians and boomers because of their brand. hope this helps.
>>18556592French Lover
>>18556592French Lover has a good amount of vetiver but I wouldn't call it a vetiver frag, it's also got flowery galbanum and angelica, which make it somewhat bitter, cedar, clean musk and it's got an overall soft, slightly earthy, slightly green feel.Sycomore smells like high quality vetiver oil, like Encre Noir without the ink and much more three-dimensional, it's more flowery and greener and very nuanced without going into full on grass territory like Sultan Vetiver. They're not very similar.
Is there a frag that actually smells like the beach? I don't mean a frag with aquatic notes something that smells like the air in the beach, something that smells like you the sand mixed with the salty ocean air.

>>18556844Zoomer women love it
>>18556555Thank you I appreciate that. On that note I should clarify that the two most popular polycyclic musks, Galaxolide and musk tetralin are going to be prohibited. These molecules can be found in almost every fragrance in existence, especially since Galaxolide makes up the modified Grojsman accord (IES, Galaxolide and Hedione) that almost every modern fragrance is built on. If there is a fragrance whose current iteration you like, and that you cannot stomach smelling even 5-10% different after the formula gets updated, I would suggest you to purchase it. I have personally always been quite fond of Kiehls original musk (50% Galaxolide), Musc Ravageur (22% Galaxolide and musk tetralin) and Koublai khan by Serge Lutens. On the MR. Note, Roucel considers Helmut lang to be his muskiest fragrance. I can think of a handful of molecules with a relatively similar olfactory properties that could be substituted for either, but nothing that smells exactly the same

>>18556955Vintage Musk ravageur is very different from the present iterations. The original formula is much more “intense”, utilizing an accord of various synthetic musks, castoreum synth and deer musk replacer to make the fragrance very animalic. The current version has greatly decreased these facets, favoring a more modern approach by increasing the sweet molecules like Ethyl vanillin. >>18556973There are a plethora of fragrances that are built on one foundational molecule. Megamare for instance mostly consists of Ambrocenide while almost 70% of Jubilation XXV is made up of iso e super and Galaxolide, The original Cologne indelible by FM was made up of 50% Habanolide. The fragrances listed are all part of very different olfactory families but still have certain characteristics in common. Personally, I have always favored a more balanced approach to composing a scent, especially because utilizing the same foundational aromachemicals often leads to very uninteresting bases.>>18556922Olfactory psychology suggests that scent is something deeply autobiographical given the olfactory bulbs vicinity to both hippocampus and amygdala. Got a sample of Bon Monsieur a while back, I really liked how prominent the carnation was in the mid and the noticeable sandalwood in the base. I’ve since bought a bottle and while it’s definitely the same scent, it kind of all runs together as a very singularly blended mix such that I can’t pick out those notes I really enjoyed, and it ends up just smelling very shampoo-like? Kind of disappointing imo, I’m considering just selling it at this point

Any incense+leather that doesn't smell like piss or sweat or cost $200+?
Prada Paradigme is actually pretty nice. I bought a 50ml at the store because I really liked the smell. I hadn't heard about it before trying it, and definitely none of the negative buzz surrounding it. After checking reviews online though, it's like me and reviewers bought two different bottles or something. Besides the initial spray, it really isn't overly sweet like people are saying, it's a quite nice fresh smell, pretty reminiscent of one of the RL polo fragrances, but with a nice wood and bergamot smell. You'd think it was going to be foul dogshit the way people have been talking about it. The bottle is nothing to write home about in my opinion. it's very functional to me, though this seemed to be the only aspect that reviewers liked, oddly enough.I also saw people saying it was overpriced, but it's a brand new release, and it really isn't that much more expensive than most other similar fragrances on the market.you can really tell a lot of people went in wanting to hate this one, instead of trying it with an open mind. i can tell, because i went in blind and loved it. you know something is good when the best criticism is that it's "just mass-market" or "generic to appeal to the masses" or whatever. Granted, they kinda brought it upon themselves by calling it 'Paradigme' and making all the marketing about how it's so 'different'.
