A friend gave me his bottle after getting buyer's remorse off an impulse buy. I don't know anything else off this house but the branding is so generic it looks like it's from a dupe house.
As for the scent itself, it's loud as fuck and the spray off a sweater from yesterday is still popping in and out of the air in my room 20+ hours after. It's a juicy mango that's 80% ripe with a hint of weed. Don't really get any coffee that's listed in the notes and on Fragrantica. Reminds me of some realistic-fruity Xerjoffs but a lot more "raw" and doesn't have the smoothness or creaminess from something like Cruz Del Sur II.
Not cheap-smelling but also not on the level of the MSRP. Looks like you can get it for less than half off at discounters. I'd wear it at a music festival probably.
>>
>>18566688
Always wanted to try, but there are no stores where i can sample them, how "incensy" is it?
I tried many incese fragrances but nothing is really close to the smell i get when real incense is burned.

I find it very interesting how broad the range of fragrances discussed on here is, although it strikes me as very odd in some instances. Many creations I see promoted here close to daily are very amateurish in nature (I say this because they either have nonsensical formulas or a generally odd or unpleasant scent profile), seeing as their creators are mostly self taught or not proficient at their craft. I believe fragrances exist in two distinct families, not niche and designer, but instead fragrances created for consumers versus those whose whole concept revolves around catering to a more knowledgeable audience. I am positive you can all identify fragrances belonging to either camp.
>>
>>18566747

It's not incensy at all, you know that smell when your house has been "cleaned" with incense? Kind of like that but not actual burning incense. Nothing will have that real burning incense smell, the best you can do is just something you will enjoy.

Anyone use designer deodorant or aftershave? Matching it with the perfume, perhaps? Ex. Fahrenheit or Eau des Baux.
I normally wear unscented deo but I'd be curious to try something nice, unless of course this idea is retarded and a waste of money.
>>
>>18566747
Independent perfumers make skill intensive fragrances that you can actually tell it's complex yourself. Designers and niche are equally skill intensive but they smell very simple and the only way to tell how complex it is is by GCMS analysis or looking at the formula. Independents have to show their work on the scent itself because that's the only way to have any credibility.
>>
I've been on a hunt for a specific perfume, does anyone knows what smells like this: It's feminine, lots of floral, fruity berry, vanilla in the opening but has a weird masculine aromatic fougere vibe? I've smelled it way back in the early 2000s, every girl wears this in the classroom. It has some sort of shampooey vibe, I can definitely pick out the oakmoss in it. Please tell me your guesses.

Depends on the brand but imo it's mostly a waste of money. I was gifted a L'eau D'Issey PH gift set with a 100 ml EDT and shower gel+aftershave and although the other products were nice the smell was basically gone after half an hour and I also got dry scalp from the shower gel.

On the other hand I also got Le Labo Basil conditioner cause a friend worked at one of their stores for a while and it's the best hair product I've ever owned because of the scent + also how my hair feels after a shower. It also vibes with my Thé Noir 29 very well. I'd never get a bottle without a discount though.

I'd say you should find out if it's actually a good skincare product for you first rather than something that complements your fragrances.

Kalimantan Oud is nice. It smells earthy damp, fougere-ish, a bit "salty pussy" reminiscent of BR 540 compared to the traditional animalic oud accord in perfumery.

The perceived complexity of a fragrance is inextricably linked to the overall balance of the formula. In an unbalanced fragrance, certain aromachemicals will stand out from the rest and distort the progression of the scent, in a balanced fragrance meanwhile, all effects are produced as desired, while also allowing certain lesser dosed molecules to take the stage along the progression. Many amateur perfumers, such as those discussed in the thread, unfortunately don’t have certain sensibilities that a more instructed or talented perfumer might have, from a structural standpoint to a chemical one. For instance, I believe that neither considers evaporation curves and material degradation when creating a fragrance. I base this both off of personal experience encountering their products, as well as various reports I read over the years. This is not to say they are not talented, I spoke about this length in a previous post. The perfumery of today is a lot more performative and based on showmanship than it was in previous decades, as I am sure many of you will undoubtedly have noticed. This is where I believe the true skill of these individuals to lie, as marketers able to tell a story. Another point of malcontent is that many of these individuals simply buy old unfinished formulas and publish them as is, only making a few substitutions to make the formula either less expensive or to comply with IFRA 51 category 4, all this while pretending to be the actual creators.

At any point in the fragrance, does it smell like cigarettes to you?

I was grabbing some other samples a while ago and added this in on a lark and I’ve tested it twice now and both times I get this cigarette smoke adjacent smell after like ~1 hour.

>>
>>18567160
I don't appreciate this sort of comment. It isn't kind or constructive.
>>
>>18567156
What size is your current collection, and are you trying to reduce, maintain, or grow it?
Personally I enjoy sampling a wider variety of things, for the experience if nothing else, and so would vote for the BFL discovery set, but Mousse Illuminee alone is a fantastic frag and Rostracto is also quite interesting.

Eucris may be good but is a distant third imo because as I said, I prefer variety.
>>
>>18567168
Don’t even respond to posts like this when it’s just trolling or negative. Nothing constructive, positive advice, or suggestions, not worth the few seconds to type out a response. More so because there are so many posts like this, often just a word or two response of some generic, negative adjective.
>>
>>18567172
Mostly looking for something gloomy and melancholic to match the dark fall/winters of the upper Midwest. The Encre Noire line has done that well but I want further variety in that one area.

MI & Rostracto don't really fit that bill but I've been meaning to get them for a while as I enjoy them both. My collection is already pretty sizable, planning to sell off most of it next year but that's a problem for future me
>>
>>18567099

>>
>>18567177
Damn, I get wanting MI and Rostractro, MI is one of my faves and I’ve thought about full bottling Rostracto but don’t think I’d have enough occasions to wear it over the rest of my collection.

Plus, if you want gloomy and melancholic, definitely go for the BFL’s, it’s kind of their thing.

I don’t 100% agree with it, but one of the fragrance infographics (“Green” fragrances, I think?) describes their Fathom V as “bottled melancholy”. I do think you’ll find something you like though, they have more than one that fit the description.

It’s a bit close to Coromandel but has an antique wood furniture lacquer note in the middle. A very “Chanel” scent if you’ve tried their other stuff in the Exclusifs line like Cuir de Russie. If you like Shalimar EDP kind of ambers you’ll probably like it as well, but I don’t recommend it as blind buy.

Today I finally checked out a ton of expensive and niche stuff.

Is there a better soft rose + airy amber scent than this?
It doesn't even necessarily have to feature rose, but I really love the whole profile, it gives such a feeling of luxury and high quality.
(I'll buy it if there isn't, regardless of how comically overpriced this whole line is)

Not that he has an extensive library of frags, but I think he’s only discontinued 3 or so of his fragrances, so you’re probably safe, and it wouldn’t surprise me if some of those were due to material constraints. That said, it’s certainly not one of his more mass appealing fragrances, so don’t wait too, too long. MI on the other hand, that’s not going anywhere.

You're wrong, amateurs make more complex and better compositions because they are given the space to from their hobbyist customers who want progression and novelty. Designers could do the same but they are shackled by their mainstream consumers whom can't be challenged and prefer linear, top heavy scents. The fault in your logic stems from your theory and appeal to authority instead of the realized product.

I believe that you are fundamentally misunderstanding the concept of Perfumery as a craft. Before enrolling in ISIPCA or other such schools, you must first complete a masters in a scientific field, such as chemistry or chemistry adjacent fields, once you have a masters you go though a thorough examination and only then you are allowed in. If you are interested in learning more about perfumery you should consult various books on Jean Carles.
>>18567421
This is called an Overdose, intentionally utilizing a molecule well beyond its suggested range. I believe there to be a few exponents of this particular type of perfumery, chiefly among which Amouage, seeing as the approach they take to perfumery is largely based around balancing very powerful molecules with each other. More amateurish perfumers will unintentionally approach these styles. >>18567343
This is not the case at all; many “DIY” perfumers unfortunately lack the capacity to create uniquely complex products given their lack of familiarity with certain molecules not available to the general consumer market, which is the origin of most of their molecules. For instance, creed famously uses a Hedione captive and sources their citrus from Capua, while amouage and others utilize Akigalawood and other captives. Until recently many superambers, such as Amber Xtreme were captives, famously used in Dior Sauvage. I would liken it to painting without having certain colors available to use.

Drakkar Noir is really weird currently. The new formulation doesn't project for long, and it's only really noticeable for 90 minutes, but it's on your skin and a skin scent you have to snort for like 12 hours.

Perhaps you don’t understand what the term “skin scent” means? It means you can’t smell it unless you press your nose to your skin.

Stop pressing your nose to your skin and you won’t smell it anymore.

It is on the weaker side. There's lots of iso-e super which people go noseblind too quite fast. Some say that letting it sit for a while after opening makes it stronger, but I've not noticed much of a difference

>>18567543
I have the extreme flanker and its performance is utter dogshit. I go noseblind to it in 3 minutes if I spray it on my neck so I mostly do elbows/stomach on the rare occasion I wear it. But even then, it's the only frag that I can spray on clothing and there'll be practically no traces of it within a couple of hours. Kinda sad, since I enjoy the simplistic inky grass scent profile.

Serious question, how do i find out if a fragrance gone bad?
Recently i aquired tons of testers of creed, diptyque, bdk and amouage, which a lot of them are 10 years and older.
Some of them still smell like parfum but have an off smell, like swampy ass, or wood that someone pissed on.
Are they supposed to smell like that, or have they gone bad?
I got them for free so no biggie, just curios

>>
>>18567954
Ultra Male is disgusting. Get Le Male or Le Male Le Parfum. That way you won't smell like a middle schooler.

Indeed, that is interesting. Didn’t open the actual patent site to confirm, but if my understanding is correct that means Akigalawood isn’t even “a material” it’s a composition of 3 materials in approximate concentrations.

Unfortunately, I am unable to divulge any information pertaining to this particular fragrance, if you would like I could instead discuss Polo Green or Tsar, both of which I have become intimately familiar with, I can’t really say anything beyond that so I’ll hope you know to ask the right questions.
>>18567583
I would strongly suggest you to instead purchase your own aromachemicals and start experimenting, this goes for everyone in this thread; there are a lot of new insights to be had from directly working with the molecules. If you are purely interested in the science behind it I would recommend you to read perfumery practice and principles as well as scent and chemistry, two very interesting books that will induct you into the world of perfumery, both from a chemical and creative standpoint

Smelling Le Male nowadays reminds me of dudes in their 40s still out clubbing when clubbing was still a thing. (And yes I know that Ultra Male was the clubbing flanker)

The more you post the more I suspect youre a bot
>>
>>18568147
Le Male doesn't remind me of parties it reminds me of a balding man smoking at the balcony at 3 am talking about divorce papers
>>
>>18568147
Le Male was also extremely popular for clubbing when it came out
Only later did the standards get so fucked that it wasn't sweet and annoying enough anymore

Spend more time around older generations and not just people your age. Assuming you're early 30s or under. You'll get a compliment (or get called out) more often.
