/btg/ BOOT GENERAL - SHRUNKEN CALF EDITION

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bick4/renovateur
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP
>Don't forget that boots need time to dry properly, rotate them and rest them

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.
>Are Thursdays any good?
no.

Any thoughts on the Wolverine 1000 miles? My other boots are a Jim Green Numzaan and Razorback, looking for something a bit more plain. I haven't heard anything that jumps out as being bad about Wolverine. The sale price brings them down to just about what I'm willing to stomach. I'm a size 8 in the JGs, and according to the size chart on Wolverine's website I'll be a 7 for them.
>>
>>18601955
CXL lottery considering that wolverine maximizes yield per hide
>>
>>18601955
The clicking is consistently bad, it's kinda impossible to do good clicking with chromexcel that thin imo.
The heel stack is reconstituted leather and the insole is fiberboard, both kinda suck for the price.
I'd rather buy these.

Are you a tradesperson? No? Then don't buy White's. Despite that one half-retarded unemployed kid who regurgitates the same stale unfunny meme about semi-dress, White's are blue collar larp boots and don't actually look good. Buy Lofgren engineers and fewer people will think you're pretending and realize it's a fashion choice.
>>
>>18602908
Most people won't see a difference between Lofgren and Whites, especially with jeans on. If they dont see the buckles they'll probably all think you're wearing cowboy boots lel And whoever the one person is that think someone is larping for wearing whites engineers most likely thinks all types of boots is a larp anyway.

Anyway whites have gay removable foam insoles. Thought they were supposed to be based and trad. And white. If i wanted foam insoles I'd become a sneakerhead.

602 was a jank last but it looked much better than the 602m because of the way the wide ball tapered into the toe
602m is more livable but the same size in 602 looked nicer if a bit tight on the toes onj certain days

10.5 602 vs 602m I'd go 602m any day. It just fits me like a glove. Just got a new 618 pair and it is so wide at the ball. Despite this, it looks the best out of the three.
>>
>>18604059
me i cant do the 618 but the issue is the 602m opens up the taper from the same ball so irl looks more almond despite the wider overall shoe
602 was always a bit jank on length though
i dont have enough care to trial 602m even though 602 10.5 is borderline perfect save a few mm in length and the width. the 11 602m is a bit roomy but i cant do a third questionable 10.5 on promised changes

Had to whip them out to see what you meant.

I wouldn't bother with 602m unless it's a leather you really want, Andrew is doing away with everything but 645 and 618. But I will say, if 602 if perfect on you minus the length, 602m will just be a little bit roomier on the ball of feet, same length.
>>
>>18604067

I just went to a leather supply store and bought some thick natural veg tan leather. I bought a half cow's worth because it was on sale and I planned to make some belts with it but you can get much smaller sections, then I just traced the outline of the original insoles on the leather and cut it by hand.

I'm totally new to boots (besides whatever USAF issues)
Looking for something comfy and more resilient and weather proofed than my vans or running shows to walk around cities and urban areas, especially now that winter has arrived.

If you're an actual blue collar worker you're gonna wear down most boots in about the same time, $1k boots don't have magic rubber that somehow lasts 5x as long to justify the price tag. Also resoleability is a meme, you're gonna be paying $150 to $200 for a good resole which is about what you can get a new pair of Timbs for, and that's assuming you can find a good cobbler of which there aren't many left out there. Most cost effective option will be small local brands that make workboots, they won't be effay but they will be cheap and meet regulations, up a step from that is Timbs, then Jim Green (which I wouldn't necessarily call good looking), and then there's Red Wing and all the other "heritage" fashion boot brands in ascending order of price but honestly the price:performance isn't there for any of these.
>>
>>18604683
All true except the claim that there aren’t many good cobblers left. In Europe there are many cobblers, at least one in every city, and they’re not going to disappear because the attention to eco-sustainability and recycling is more alive than ever, especially among norms who go trad not because they care about the intrisic value of their goods, but because they genuinely believe climate change is the end of the world. Resoling your shoes is more of a thing today than in the past.
>>
>>18604690
Do you have any facts to back that up? Because I'm European and I don't know any GOOD cobblers. Also the eco-activists that are insufferable enough to actually make it their life are almost always vegan and would never buy leather footwear.

Only way to do this without getting raped on fashion boot brand markup is to go to local brick & mortar shops that specialize in work footwear. They will have everything remotely reasonably priced for the application need. Which may very well be timbs pro line and similar anyway, it just depends on your market. As other anon pointed out, durability in trades footwear requires some cost benefit analysis. 100% more expensive =/= 100% longer lasting, resole is also a questionable value.

>>
>>18605379
The point is that cobblers work and keep working even if retarded environmentalists refuse to wear leather shoes.
>>
>>18605384
>The point is that cobblers work and keep working even if retarded environmentalists refuse to wear leather shoes.
Who ever said anything to the contrary? The argument always was that cobblers who are able to resole gyw boots and do a proper job of it are a dying breed.
>>
>>18605399
And you know why? Because people are poor. And the poor is growing in number. You might think >hurr durr they can’t anymore the West has fallen!, but in reality it’s just that normal people won’t spend bazillion dollars for a fucking leather welt and autistic cork filling. So cobblers will lose the habit of doing gyw resolation. That’s it. You have to thank the Jews, nothing else. And having said this, my city (I’m in Europe) still has plenty of cobblers and two of them have already resoled my gyw boots perfectly well. Post scriptum: stop getting mad like a fucking ape to whoever replies to you on this goddamn site. We’re just talking.

Got the Goral chelsea boots to be some travel shoes. They fit well although they're a little long since I erred on the side of caution and went half up for sizing. My Iron Rangers have some discoloration on the left toe, I noticed it at the store but I figured it would fade with time, it hasn't, should I do something about it? I was thinking of two-toning the cap and heel with mink oil or something.
Also, my right boot feels more broken in than my left, the exterior of the right upper is way softer so it's not caused by asymmetrical foot sizes, anyone know reasons why? Driving maybe? I don't drive much but I do press my right heel into that part when I drive.
>>
>>18605887
2 weeks since what? Since you placed the order with no confirmation? 2 weeks since they received the order? 2 weeks since they shipped?
The only acceptable reason to do a chargeback is if you sent them money and never heard anything since
If they confirmed the order or shipped it, then it's just a waiting game. It's December, they just did black Friday and they have Christmas shopping, they're probably swamped
Don't fuck them over with a chargeback unless they took your money and ghosted you, which I can't imagine they did since I had a wonderful experience with TLB

The prices are pretty normal for a Portuguese/Spanish brand. Also in Europe shipping is surprisingly good still.
>>
>>18606383
Not at all. Yanko and Berwick are the most entry level welted Spanish brands and they are north of 200€ and creeping into 300€. Panama Jack are glued and hover around 200€. Meanwhile these guys are selling sub 200€ and even some sub 150€ welted boots, those are definitely not pretty normal prices.

Why do you place Lofgren higher than Viberg? Maybe better qc? Vibergs use a channeled insole for their goodyear welted boots though while Lofgren uses the common canvas rib method. Isn't the Viberg way considered superior construction?

The welted Viberg ones are actually like 70 Euro cheaper than Lofgren. Think I prefer welted over stitchdown so them not being the regular Viberg stitchdowns is a plus. Europoors can't resole stitchdowns anyway.

Also is it true that Viberg is gonna transition away from their stitchdown and do only(or mostly) welted eventually. Pretty sure I heard someone say that.
>>
>>18606819
Looks very similar to that Japanese ww2 boot that Lofgren recently released. For probably 1/3 of the price. Very cool

just sharpie the stitching if you want, keep the brown sole imo. you can also get leather laces that are black/darkbrown on one side and lighter on the other, i think this can balance out the brown on the sole. Truman does this for a lot of their black boots with brown soles, i think it looks great. better than all black, and more versatile.

i know essentially nothing about boots
does anyone know any recommendations for a "working" boot? i am a bartender/server and on busy days i regularly walk 7-8 miles around the restaurant and up and down two flights of stairs over a hundred times, not very arduous work just lots of walking and carrying food and boxes. ive only ever worn skate shoes and winter boots my whole life but my old beat up pair with no treads is going to kill me walking through the kitchen one day, there has already been a few close calls.
i dont like chelseas, i think toe caps and those "cowboy etchings" look ugly and incredibly gay, and i probably dont need a steel toe.
i like big toe boxes dark browns but colour isnt very important as long as its not garish
good non slip treads are my only real must.
spending over 250 on any piece of clothing actually makes me feel sick to my stomach but i can be flexible about that if its actually good value per dollar, my knees are joints are incredibly fucked so i should probably spend more on shoes anyways (im 20 not geriatric, im just medically cucked.)
any and all brand or specific boot recommendations are appreciated, thank you :3

why is it so fucking flat

>>
>>18607820
Looks like the vamp and the tongue is one piece of leather. As opposed to the usual stitching the tongue to the vamp. Makes it seem more slouchy. Very based! Except that it probably isn't gusseted then.
>>
>>18607820
Domed, bulging toeboxes are obnoxious and essentially meant for obese people. A normal person’s foot gets thinner and flatter towards the toes.

and PNW brands don't use GYW, its stitchdown and/or handsewn stitchdown they only started using GYW recently to meet higher demands

also pnw would have built up heels from several layers of leather instead of the single block plus heel cap as seen here>>18608155

>>

You should get at least another boot if you want your Iron Rangers to last the rest of your life. Won't last as long if you don't rotate and won't let them dry out between wears.

All leather shoes, as long as are stitched and made with good materials, can last a lifetime provided that you take care of them.

I try to dress in pretty simple clothes that doesn't stand out. I need a new pair of boots that I can wear both in the office and in a northern city full of snow, slush and rain. Something that isn't loud, not a statement, not highly fashionable etc. I don't want them to look like I am LARPing something I am not. They also shouldn't intentionally look to large like many boots do, my feet are big and those type of boots would just look like I am wearing clown shoes.

Just a normal basic pair of boots that works in an office setting during the snowy months and in the city streets.

Anyone have reccomendations?

I've had mine since 2016. you can see on the inside I've had the heel stripe part replaced, that wore through, and they've been resoled twice. The leather sole was awful in the Michigan weather so they have a vibram on with more tread and they do great. I'm sure they have a lot of life in them yet. You can also see how the two boots have creased differently which is I'm sure due to different leathers. Cobbler always remarks on what a good pair they are though. It would be cool to try a redwing or something but until these are fully ruined I have no need.
